One word: Synology

Check on newegg, buy some NAS drives and good to go. Dunno how much redundancy your data needs.

I concur with cgori.  If you guys are frustrated no then just go with what most consider the best prosumer/SMB NAS device.

That is 4 bay so you will be able to expand into it, which is how I would cost-justify the few extre hundred bucks.  It is also more fully-featured offering awesome options such as integrated cloud backup (they have an option to use symform which is a cool product - basically bit torrent for backup more or less).

You will also need two hard drives for it.  Buy these.

If you want to save a hundred bucks you could go with a Drobo instead of Synology which will also get the job done but isn't as good of a name (and we run into a ton of these freaking things).

You could also save some cash on the hard drives going with something less than a WD Black .... but failed hard drives suck ass.

One question:

With cloud backup, can users pull data from anywhere (home, phone, etc?) from the cloud?

Not with the online backup but I'm pretty sure Synology has other ways to do that (google "Cloud Station",  I think that is it and should come built in).  I'd link it but mobile at the moment....

With all the mention cloud already here...why not simply use a non hardware based storage option.  Then you're not worried about disk failures, and power/etc.

I have to have something in the office. I also like the cloud capability that Nip linked to earlier.

I have exactly that ds1412 linked above, it's been great so far. Next project is to make it my music server.

Honest question for nip, why WD black instead of Red? The red are 5400 and run a little cooler /quieter. They're still plenty fast, to the point that i haven't noticed any speed issues, and any little more reliability I can get seemed worth it.

The red are honestly fine for most people. I do not like red in raid1 because the reds are variable between 5400 and 7200 and it feels weird to me and I don't trust it as much. The blacks are just a bit faster and a bit more reliable -- they are backed up with a 5 year warranty over a 3 (red) too.

In real life I've only had 1 black fail on me and maybe 10 reds. Both aren't bad considering we manage probably 2500 or so of them.
