I need a ruling

Mighty convenient that it's a move to Chelsea. Why doesn't anyone ever ask for a ruling to switch from MUFC to the Brighton Seaguls?

Your excuses for your switch are not unreasonable but it's stll glory hunting and if you're looking for a sympathetic ear for glory hunting, I have a hard time with that.

I fancy your guys for the league this year and maybe even Europe. Seriously, will that really be something you'll be happy about or just putting on a show for the FIL?

Will the lad also need to buy a set of spiked shoulder pads and face paint?
It certainly will help their cause. They can opt out of the face paint by just beating up a Chargers fan in public.

A bunch of these were almost filed in 1983.

Brighton will see all of you miscreants in the FA Cup! (And not before.)

I can't even fathom this. Stick with your team, man.

Who is this father-in-law of yours to even think he has a say in this? It really doesn't bode well for the future.

No real and true sports fan would ask another real and true sports fan to switch allegiances to make fan #1 happy. In short, your father-in-law is a fucking dick. Don't do anything to please this asshole. Make him follow through on his threat (refuse to hand over his daughter, what is he Lord Boleyn?), or back off. If he follows through, his daughter and everyone else he cares about will think he's the biggest fucking asshole on earth, and then he will back off. If you give in to this guy, you are performing self-emasculation.

Jesus Christ, he's said this in jest. If he was actually legitimately serious about it I'd tell him to go fuck himself. My bad for not making that painfully evident.

I'm doing this entirely of my own volition.

Pete is legend.

My very soon to be father in law continues to tell me that he won't hand his daughter over to me until I give in and renounce Newcastle. To his credit, he begrudgingly accepts Newcastle as a choice as in his eyes they're a proper club for an American- he would have serious issue had I been an Arsenal or Manchester fan or something.

I've always pulled for Chelsea apart from when they play the Toon, although I would never classify myself as a Chelsea fan.  Given the continued shit that comes out of NE1 and my tenuous at best connection to the Toon and my actual connection to Chelsea, I think I'm going to switch.  I'm 31 years old, increasingly overweight, balding, about to get married- I have enough torture and bullshit in my life already. I don't need any more hate.
Dude, it didn't sound like he was joking by the way you framed it.

He's given me shit in good fun for 4 years about Newcastle (and I to him when Newcastle has bested Chelsea), and has said that to me before in jest.  It was my mistake- I didn't think anyone would seriously believe that he would not allow me to marry his daughter based on my random choice of an English soccer team.

I can without question assure everyone here that he would still walk his daughter down the aisle a week from today regardless of what I do vis a vis soccer.

Are you English? You chose a soccer team arbitrarily because of a video game? Who gives a fuck?

Like, wasn't the choice totally arbitrary in the first place?

I haven't been a football fan for very long and I picked a team to follow just to have someone to root for.  I picked Newcastle because I was really into Puma and I didn't really know any other team except Man U and I wasn't going to follow them.  After just one year, a new shoe sponsor, a new sponsor that I didn't want to support and Mike Ashley, I decided to follow someone else.  I chose Chelsea even though they had a manager no one liked (Benitez).  The only time I ever looked at NUFC after was to see how Ben Arfa was doing.   I say cheer for who you want.  It's fun to root for an owner who wants to win more than he wants to make more money.
