Scary start to today's race. All drivers appear to be safe. Long Red Flag on lap 1.

Seems like Russell and Zhou were passengers in a crash caused by Gasly. Zhou is lucky to be alive.

edit: To be clear, I’m not sure Gasly is necessarily at fault, in the sense that he saw a gap and went for it.

Burned . . . Blacklisted
That was one of the most entertaining start-to-finish F1 races I’ve seen. Thank God Zhou is ok.
I can’t believe the energy of that Zhou impact given how relatively early after the start the contact came.
He just spun and spun, made it all the way through that gravel, and then just launched up off the asphalt. Insane and I can’t believe he survived, much less appears like he may be fine.

Have we gotten an update on Albon? He’s the one that ended up at Coventry hospital.
Seems like he's okay. Sore but nothing too major. It's amazing to see how far the safety has come.

I'm not sure I love the lack of penalties it's going to keep incentivizing sending people off the track but they've been giving more and more leeway for not leaving the space.

I record all the F1 broadcasts (or at least I thought I did). Comcast decided I didn't want to watch the Sprint Race today.

I suspect they group them as "Practice" "Qualifying" "Race" and this must have some other metadata attached, but good lord that's annoying. I woke up this morning and checked the DVR, I had FP2 but not Sprint.

That stinks it replays on Watch ESPN On Demand if it happens again by the way.

Ah, thanks. Weirdly the ESPN App on the set top box doesn't seem to work for this, but it does work on my phone? /shrug

EDIT: nevermind, it does, it's just buried in there.

No problem! Yeah the ESPN app is not great depending on platform.

Exact same thing happened to me. Watched Le Tour - then was ready to watch the recorded race….nothing.

Been following unaffiliated and confused by the penalty to Russell at the start of this race. Seemed to me like Perez was clearly driving in a way to invite that contact but the penalty goes the other way referring to other decisions. Can anyone link to something so I can learn?

@swiftaw is correct, but you typically have every right to be confused. Different stewards, different race directors, shifting expectations, different rule applications… It’s like the NBA on steroids.

Indeed: and we’re only at the halfway mark. Ferrari,MB, RB all in the mix going forward.
And the racing in the middle pack has been really good. Lots of overtakes. Much better than previous years and the Alonso train that we got in some races at the beginning of the season.

Yeah it's nice that a few teams actually battle in the midfield. Alpine/Haas/Merc/Alfa all have been having decent battles. If Toro Tauri and McLaren get back on form the best of the rest will be pretty competitive.

I ll say it again. Over the past couple of years that I 've been following closely, the one driver that has impressed me with his ability to consistently take more from his car is Alonso. And the thing is every time, he does it in a different way, as he seems to have an endless bag of tricks up his sleeve. Granted, some of those tricks aren't very kosher, like the bs he pulled in the Baku qualis last week, but today he was just pure class.

I am new to F1, not because of Netflix, but due to moving to Amsterdam and all the cheering last year. Anyways, these announcers are excellent.

Grady made bad decisions but you could at least understand what he was thinking even if it was wrong.

Ferrari feels like they are just letting a five year old spin a decision wheel.

I recently discovered this guy and he seems to have the best analysis of what's really going on during race weekends.

FYI: Peter Windsor used to have the ~Martin Brundle pit-reporter/grid-walk job when Fox Sports (I think I've got that right, maybe it was Speed/Speedvision in the beginning part since things flip-flopped a lot) used their own crew to televise F1 for America in the late 90's / early 2000's - they also had Bob Varsha for commentary who is great, along with Steve Matchett (ex-Benetton mechanic, who was on the NBC team as well). That group (especially Windsor) was excellent overall - but at the time Windsor was the only one on-site, the rest of the broadcast crew was in studio stateside. Varsha did not have the "calling a horse race" frenzy of Crofty, and Matchett/Windsor both had been around F1 for decades so they really knew a lot about strategy and technical details, plus familiarity with all the principals.

Am I wrong or was the Ferrari team leader too quick to confirm driver error today? I would think as boilerplate "We will look at all the details, he is great driver" etc answer would be the norm.

Charles admitted he blew it and has been pretty harsh on himself. I don’t know the exact timeline but I’m not shocked it’s already out there. Ferrari strategy continues to be hilariously bad, they have reliability problems, and they’re generally clownshoes. Why not pile some PR stuff on for misdirection?

I don’t think Charles has what it takes to be a champion at this point. You can only make one or two of these mistakes in a winning season. He’s made far more than that already.

Binotto is probably looking for someone to throw under a bus right about now - you'd have to think his job is not exactly safe.

Anyone have any context on the conversation that was going on in the post-race room that got sound-deleted after the race?

The Red Bull engineer made a remark about the throttle getting stuck and then...
oops the sound dropped out. Crofty tried to cover for it by claiming "technical difficulties." Uh huh.

I thought Nico Rosberg made a good point post race about the wind being a potential factor and eating into the downforce on the car.

Got it, thanks! I couldn't make out what the engineer was saying.

Dammit Seb :(
As I said earlier I’ve only been following casually but he’s one of the drivers I had grown to like. I recognize he’s had a long story and I’ve only caught the end but I loved how forward he was about using his platform to make the world a better place.

If you only know him from now / the end of the Ferrari years, it's easy to forget that he was so good, so dominant in the RB years. Look at the back half of 2013 - those 9 consecutive wins are CRAZY. Of course, this is right at the switchover to Lewis/Merc as a dominant force.

At this point, you have to feel that someone up there has it in for Ferrari. They were looking to dominate this weekend, so the Gods decided to let the floodgates open and have the qualifying done in the wet on a track that doesn't allow overtakes.

And for foreshadowing, Latifi had the best time in FP3 with Albon third!

Latifi P1 is just… Wow. The immediate assumption is that he’s the only driver out there. The second is that it’s a video game result.

Meanwhile Ricciardo was 6 tenths slower than Norris. Wtf is wrong with him?

Maybe Norris is that good?
