HR and Verducci are out at FOX, Smoltz is in.

My favorite was DeGrom being clocked at 97mph and Reynolds saying "to the hitters it's seems like he's throwing 100."

He is truly the voice of the idiot

Compared to the Jackie Robinson story, that's a minor detail

I forget who was on the mound but he was pumping in fastballs and Harold goes, "That's a real 98", as if there has ever been a soft 98 mph fastball.

EDIT: It might have been Betances.

Not a Harold fan, but I actually to that quote to mean a legit 98, and not a slower fastball pumped up by an inaccurate radar measurement.

Baseball broadcaster Harold Reynolds has done the near impossible hes managed to make Canadians very, very upset.

During Sunday nights broadcast on Fox Sports of Game 3 of the ALDS between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers, Reynolds made the following quip about Americas neighbors to the North when discussing foul balls going into the crowd.

Theres not a lot of people who grew up playing baseball in Canada. They arent used to catching balls in the stands.

Oh yes. He went there.

@ShiDavidi: Just spoke with Harold Reynolds, plans to address Canada quip during broadcast today. "I'm sorry I upset everybody in Canada."

What's funny about that comment is that it could be construed as he was implying they don't hit foul balls...or something.

Though I inferred that he's trying to say Canadian baseball fans don't show up at games. This is a guy who played on teams that never once outdrew the Blue Jays in attendance, not one single time.

Did anyone catch HR discussing Stroman starting on "short rest" in Game 5 tonight?  And NO ONE corrected him!  He started Game 2 on October 9.  Game 5 is Oct. 14.  That's 4 days rest.  Guess the Canadian exchange rate confuses Harold too.

I can't stand Harold Reynolds as much as anyone, but having to address that remark is ridiculous.
Can't someone find audio of him talking about ISIS or something so he can actually get fired.

Canadians have the same attitude about Americans playing hockey, so it's pretty funny.

Because he's not all that wrong...

Baseball is sparsely played in Canada, and despite some top-heavy results from a few great players, the breadth of participation in the game is lacking.

The quality of play at the youth level is outright poor, and the few good coaching resources are stretched too thin to really benefit all but the most naturally talented players.

There are some excellent programs, and they turn out plenty of great players, but once you get past the crust on the top, there's not much there...

My understanding of the point HR was trying to make is that since they don't play much baseball in Canada, if there happens to be a foul ball hit into the stands somebody is likely to get hurt because they don't know how to catch a ball. It certainly isn't necessary to have ever played baseball to learn and know how to catch a ball. That is how he insulted the nation of Canada.

If the other announcers/commentators corrected everything he said that was stupid, that's all they'd get to say.

I'm pretty sure Harold Reynolds said last night, when the game was 7-1, that the runner from 3B didn't attempt to score on an infield grounder as a sign of respect for the Mets. I've never heard it phrased that way.

He's also said that the way a hitter got out of the way of a pitch showed the pitcher that the hitter was right on him, and he also said that the way deGrom nodded his head after unintentionally intentionally walking a hitter means he's all business.

My favorite exchange was Joe Buck unsuccessfully hiding his disdain and contempt when HR was suggesting the Royals should challenge the out at 1B on Moustakas' bad throw.

Buck was basically saying (in a tone of extreme frustration):

"We've seen 2 angles that show he's off the bag, and there's an ump standing 5 feet away with that same angle and he called him safe. He was off the bag you moron, why would you challenge that?"

So glad you brought this up - it drove me absolutely fucking crazy. This has been HR's biggest problem to me - he grabs onto some random tiny detail and blows it up into a bigger deal than it is, all the while speculating and making up stories about what it could mean. Once he decides he's made a brilliant observation, he refuses to let it go and will torture his original thought to keep it alive. It's worse than any McCarver-style idiocy that I can remember.

He also said when the game was still 2-1 or something, that a guy didn't try to score from second because it was a sign of respect to DeGrom because they knew they'd need more than a one run lead to beat DeGrom.

It made no sense on a couple of levels.

I saw this bumped and hoped beyond reason that HR was canned. Indeed it is a Christmas miracle.

The article says Smoltz will join Buck in the booth for the WS but it's kind of vague about regular Sat. broadcasts. It's for both, right? Please?

Maybe that's just phrased that way because Fox uses regional coverage with multiple broadcast teams during the season? Smoltz and Buck would be the #1 team in regular season and the only team for the WS.

I thought HR stood for "home run" and I was confused by the thread title. I opened it to find better news than I could have ever imagined.

It's a Christmas Miracle indeed!

The single best moment of the World Series this year is when Fox had the power outage and switched to the international feed to fill the gap. Vasgersian and Smoltz were leagues ahead of Buck/HR/Verducci, and I don't really care for Vasgersian. The difference was entirely Smoltz over HR.

This is great news.

Am I the only one here who is slightly disappointed that Verducci got canned too? Don't get me wrong I'm overjoyed that Harold Reynolds got wacked but in my opinion I thought Verducci was decent. If he's the price of getting rid of HR then so be it. Would a 3 man booth of Buck Smoltz and Verducci been any good? I'm normally not in favor of 3 man booths but I think that combo might have clicked. Guess we'll never know..

Great Christmas present! Fox actually heard some feedback re Reynolds and listened to it? As bad as he was, I didn't think there was any way Reynolds would be out this quickly. Fantastico! Hallelujah!

He brought good information every time he chimed in, but I thought Verducci generally sounded a little weak, or said something I already knew. Still, I hope it wasn't a case of "while we're at it, let's can this guy too". Verducci is a strong baseball man, but maybe just not a TV guy.

I'm with you. If he was the necessary collateral damage, then so be it. But I enjoyed him during the telecasts.

Just found this.
“@richarddeitsch: Tom Verducci will continue to work games for Fox as an in-game analyst. He’ll work on one of the teams behind Buck-Smoltz.”

So he was not "fired" just reassigned it seems.
