How to find V&N?

I’ve seen it suggested many times that people should “take the political talk to V&N,” but I cannot for the life of me locate it.

Where is it, please? So that I may take it there.

Has it ever been considered to make V&N a read only forum for lurkers? I would get a lot out of reading takes from posters on this board who’s opinions I respect. I think others would benefit as well. I know it would be better than the quality of posts that come across my FB feed.

People speak far more openly knowing it's a somewhat private forum. If lurkers can view it then essentially anyone can, and that'd be the end of that

(just one man's opinion)

I can't seem to find it, either. There was a thread I was following closely that was likely moved there. Can someone help? (Will also wade in very gently)

Hello,

I noticed there's a subscription option for membership. Is that what is needed to unlock stuff like that? If so I'd happily pay the piper. Thanks!

If you respect the poster, that person probably isn't posting in V&N.

Is this a bug or feature?

First one needs to be promoted from lurker to member, then everything is visible.

Subscription is good for the soul, but doesn't affect forum visibility.

The subscription option is hard to locate. And that location is here. But it only applies if you've already been made a Member.

Since it hasn't been explained fully to other lurkers who might read this thread: Views and News (V&N) is our politics-and-policy subforum, where people who are opinionated even by SoSH standards rage against such things as corn subsidies, the pink tax, and the dying of the light. It is located here, but visible only to Members. Any lurker or newbie poster who's shown some sense about them in other boards may well get promoted to member.

Membership has its privileges, although reasonable people disagree as to whether that is one.

I was a member once, now I'm back to lurker. What'd I do?
Nothing (to my knowledge). During periodic software changes some members have been lurkerized automatically. I don't know why it happens nor how to fix it, so we have to deal with it ad hoc.

You're a member again now.

So is it possible to message a mod about promotion to membership or is membership something that the owners/mods grant to posters they deem worthy?

I'm open to campaigning for membership if I could be pointed in the right direction :)

I’d recommend adding more substance to your posts. Combing briefly through your post history it seems like a lot of Twitter links without much commentary.

Welcome, Boca! You've payed your dues over 15 years and your promotion is beyond overdue. I hope what you are about to see doesn't send you running back in terror.... ;)

Thank you CR67 really appreciate it.

I'll try to add a bit of substance to my contributions in the future.

The time difference is a bit of a hinderance to me sometimes but I'll do my best.

I've lost access to the V&N forum recently even though I'm still a member (as far as I can tell anyway).

No idea why.

Do I need to do something for reinstatement or did I do something to get booted?

Do you have access to the other members-only forums? If so, you’re probably more likely to get a response by posting your query in Backwash.

I'm not asking to be promoted to full member status, but I am curious where my new member designation falls on the lurker-to-member spectrum. I'm guessing it's a middle tier, or probationary designation?

We renamed “Lurker” to “New Member” a while ago to try to make it more welcoming.

I’ve been lurking here almost daily for 19 years now, so “new member” doesn’t really reflect my status. “Lurker” does feel a little creepy, but I might suggest a different title for non-posting members, maybe “Reader” or “Reading Member.” Just a thought. (I know, I know — 19 years and this is your first post!?)

I admire your restraint.
