How did you discover SoSH?

It's something that I've frequently wondered, as I'm sure everyone has a unique story and I'd be curious to hear what people say. For me, it was referenced in the Stewart O'Nan and Stephen King's book about the 2004 sox team, Faithful. Once I found it, I was hooked. I pretty much just lurked around the site for a few years before creating my account, but still really enjoy reading what a lot of you all have to say day in and day out.

I was just whetting my beak in the world of internet shit-posting when I read "Now I Can Die in Peace" when Simmons mentioned SoSH being a place for people with no lives to argue about the Celtics alternate uniforms.

The night Pap struck out Michael Young on that high heater. 2005? 06? I just had to go "online", I see what people thought of this new closer. I was unused to such power in the back of the bullpen - Foulke was more of a finesse guy. Had heard of "The Sons of Sam Horn" through the vernacular of Red Sox fandom - it rolled off the tongue, too.

Brilliant group of minds. You can find almost anything if you look for it. Don't always agree with it's politics, but you sign up for that.

It was the one site that taught me to ask, "Can you prove it?"

I was a real student of the David Berkowitz story and found this by mistake.

I had a whole lot of pushback on my "how can you celebrate this guy with a website when he killed those people" posts at first, but eventually we all figured it out

The infamous Curt Schilling courtship with Theo.
Me too, but I don't actually remember where I read about that. But I found it and lurked for a while. I gained membership in December 2004 and spent many a fun winter evening going through the post-season game threads.

Somebody made an absolutely classic mashup of the SoSH/NYYFans game 7 ALCS game thread. I think it was lost in the flood.

I was at a party in '03 I believe, the sox game was on and I was talking to a guy about the defensive infield and he asked if I was a Son of Sam Horn. I checked it out after the party and started lurking.

The 2008 ALDS for me. I actually discovered the SoSH Wiki first, & was fascinated by it. As an out-of-stater, I never could really discuss or read about the Red Sox with anyone else, save 1 acquaintance of mine. Have been lurking ever since, even though I became a member in 2013.

I remember in 2003 watching a Sox game with a buddy at a pizza place and the commentators (my guess would be the Fox Buck/McCarver booth or ESPN Miller/Morgan booth) were going on about closer by committee and why it was the worst idea anyone had ever had, and I wanted to have more critical knowledge about the strategy, and went to the MLB.com boards where someone referenced this place, probably in some negative light “the dorks over at SoSH like this dumb idea” or something and I thought well that sounds like a way better place than the MLB.com boards to talk baseball and have probably visited almost every day since.

Im not sure if it was this specifically, but there were 3-4 things that happened around the same time that made this place "famous." Bill Simmons posting here and mentioning it in columns, I think WEEI hosts would mention it. SoSh became a think people talked about sometime in 2003. Hard to say where I would have first heard about it.

I saw that thread years after it happened and the board had migrated, so it was at least saved for some time.

I can't remember although I know it was referenced by Schilling but I don't think I joined until I read some sabermetric article that referenced SOSH.

I remember that I became a member because I PM'd Philly Sox Fan about a clause in someone's contract and for whatever reason, he made me a member (he said, "Sometime that's how easy it is.").

At least some of the mash-up is still here: http://champagne.atspace.org/. I say some because one cell I clicked on gave me back a bad url response but two other links had the mash-up.

I swear someone here posted a link to it again not that long ago
Someone needs to save and archive that on the SoSH server

edit: Kind of nevermind, posted above

I can't remember exactly when, but pre-9/11, Holy Cross Alumni Association sent out some sort of email blast touting this HC alum writing about sports on Boston Digital City (or whatever that site was called), named Bill Simmons. I clicked thru and in his musings that day, he had a list of links to sites he found interesting. One of those sites was SOSH.

I just found this Simmons article from December 2003, after the Schilling saga. I am guessing this is the article that brought me, and countless others, to SoSH.

2. The Message Board
You probably heard the story by now: On Thanksgiving night, Schilling submitted a lengthy post on the Red Sox message board on MLB.com, then chatted with Sox fans until the wee hours on another Sox message board called "The Sons of Sam Horn" (SOSH).
Also enjoyed these lines

SOSH, a den for diehards that weeds out weaker members and has 250-post threads on subjects like "Does Casey Fossum's delivery point seem different to you?" and "One Man's Thoughts on Nomar's Last 500 At-Bats, In Order."
He stumbled into a SOSH chat room at 2:30 in the morning and found about 20 fans in there, which is my favorite part of the story -- only the guys from SOSH would be chatting about the Sox at 2:30 A.M. on Thanksgiving night.

Don't remember, but it was pre-Schilling, because I was here for the Brady vs. Bledsoe debate and 9/11.

So Must The Streets Be Filled With Craig Breslow would have been a good screen name.

Gosh, I am not even sure I remember that far back. But, I think I was Googling the Sox and this site appeared. I clicked on it and there you have it.

Right Here
First heard of it after the Thanksgiving thing with Theo and Schilling. I wasn't into message-boarding at all at that point. Then, and I think this has been somewhat lost in the annals of 2014, but SoSH was the first site to break the news of the Nomar trade in July of 2004. After that, I was more and more intrigued, until I saw the SoSH/NYYFans game-threading mash-up which is when I thought I'd give message-boarding a shot.

Kevin Goldstein mentioned it on the old Up And In podcast. 2010 or 2011. I believe he called it awesome or something similar.

I assumed it was Simmons where I first heard of the site, but now that I read this, I think I did hear about it on EEI as well. In fact, I remember being in my girlfriend's internet-less, cable-less basement apartment in Brighton, with the radio on the highest shelf trying to catch a static-riddled signal from WEEI on that infamous Thanksgiving weekend, hoping to get the latest Schilling news. No doubt Mikey Adams or Craig Mustard or whoever else was on mentioned gehrig38's foray on to a fan message board.

I lurked a bit and probably cribbed a nugget or two to pass on to other message boards for a few years before finally signing up for an account. I wasn't posting in the Sandbox long before I got promoted. Profile says that was in 2009. Holy shit. Feels like yesterday.
