How ‘bout those damn Celtics? An Appreciation Thread

deep inside Guido territory
This is a culmination of an 11-year- long journey. This journey goes back to the summer of 2013. Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens had a vision for how the next great Celtics team would look and I don’t think Danny gets enough credit for the foundation he laid that Brad took and ran with. It feels so good that he and now Brad have built this team organically and not just threw a super team together.

Brad Stevens literally hasn’t missed since he took over for Danny. The trade of Kemba Walker-for-Al Horford. The Derrick White trade. The Porzingis trade. The Jrue Holiday trade. Sam Hauser. Payton Pritchard. He was a great coach, but an even better executive.

We’ve seen the maturation of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown right in front of our eyes. They had to grow up together in the league with big expectations on their shoulders, go through the struggles of losing multiple playoff series, and come back each year with improvements in their games and in their leadership qualities.

Jayson Tatum gets so much shit from the local and national media, but he’s doing right now and really this whole season something that a top 5 player very rarely does. He has prioritized winning over individual stats and awards. It is so refreshing to see that in today’s world of individualism and me-first athletes. Sure, his shot has not fallen in this series but what is he doing? He’s making his teammates BETTER by setting them up with his passing. He’s rebounding well. He’s playing defense. Oh and by the way, despite the narratives out there about his point production he’s leading the team in the playoffs in points, rebounds, and assists. You know who’s done that since 1980 on a title-winning team? Bird, Hakeem, Duncan, LeBron 3 times, and Jokic. That’s it. Pretty good company to be in.

Jaylen Brown has taken his game to another level since being snubbed for All-NBA. He has worked his ass off over the past few offseasons to become a complete player. Him hitting clutch jump shots with the game on the line is so gratifying to see. If you told me this back in his rookie year, I wouldn't have believed you. You can tell that he took his performance in Game 7 last year really hard and has been a man on a mission this year. He has tuned out the noise of being in constant trade rumors for this player or that player and just blossomed into what I consider a top 15 player in this league if not better than that.

Jrue Holiday has been the consummate professional all season. He could have taken this a different way and wanted to be a bigger focal point offensively. He does whatever the team needs on a given night and makes everyone a better player. I think his presence on the team has made a major difference. He is exactly what we envisioned Marcus Smart should be, but what he never really could be.

Kristaps Porzingis has been the ultimate cheat code. He took this team to a completely different level with the mismatches he creates on the offensive end and has been one of the best rim protectors in the league at the same time. What a luxury to have someone like KP to be the 3rd or 4th option on any given night.

I want this title for Al Horford just as much as anybody else in the organization. He signed with the Celtics on my wedding day(7/2/16) so my wife was not exactly happy with me yelling this to everybody at our reception! But he’s the consummate professional. He has as much to do with the maturation of Tatum and Brown as anyone. Him coming back to the franchise was IMO the biggest move of the Stevens era. It brought back someone who Tatum and Brown looked up to and got the team on the right path again after Kyrie set this team back a couple years.

Joe Mazzulla has been maligned, but this year I feel like he’s got a great feel for when this team needs encouraging and when they need a kick in the ass. Schematically, he’s been awesome this playoffs especially this series in how they’re defending Luka. He deserves a ton of credit for how the guys respond to him.

This win gets us an 80-21 season, 16-3in the playoffs overall, and starts the conversation of this team being among the great teams in the history of the league. It cements Tatum and Brown as the best duo in the league, it gives Horford a long-coveted ring, and most of all it gives this team the fucking respect it deserves nationally.

I keep thinking back to Ainge taking Brown and Tatum at #3 in consecutive drafts. He was killed in a lot of circles for taking Brown in that spot. And what balls it took to trade out of the #1 pick to take Tatum.

What's great about Danny, and now Brad, is that they both have the utmost confidence in their player evaluation abilities, talking heads and other GMs be damned. That we've had both of these guys running the show after having Red for decades seems like almost impossible good fortune.

Speaking of Brad... to put aside his ego and step down as head coach, stay in the organization, take a job he's never done before, and absolutely crush it like he has is unreal. There were times this season where I'd look at a box score and think "how the hell did he manage to get White, Holiday and Porzingis on this team?!".

Obviously, players gotta play and that's what wins a title. But man, the front office of this franchise has been a freakin' powerhouse.

The foundation was clearly laid by Ainge, in a ruthless manner. Trading the big 2 once their run was over and Kyrie bolted took decisiveness (lacking in, say, a certain former Red Sox GM). Much as Duquette left Theo Manny/Pedro/Varitek and Nomar, and Theo added Ortiz (Al?)/Millar (Jdrue), Arroyo (White?) and injured ankle guy (KP/Schilling) around them, and traded the popular inherited piece (Nomar/Marcus).
Both aspects of the rebuild needed to exist for the championship. I'm glad both Ainge and Brad executed their jobs beyond any reasonable expectation.

The journey to banner 18 this year was pure joy to watch from start to finish; this team was a wagon, they rolled through the regular season, had the best record in the NBA and then steamrolled their way to a title, 4-1, 4-1, 4-0, 4-1, they did it as a team and overcame injuries to KP along the way, something a lot of media people seemed to dismiss/overlook.

I'll be forever grateful to this team and organization for all the joy they brought me this year; on a personal note, my Moms health started failing in early December, was a rough time for me and my family, she passed on March 30th. My youngest sister and I bonded over the Celtics, my Mom was a Celtics fan, my sister became a superfan this year, her and I watched game 5 at our Mom's house, we had quite a moment when they won it, I know my Mom was up in heaven with Red and her two favorite Celtics; Bill Russell and DJ celebrating.

This is one of the many joys that sports brings to people, it gave me and my sister an escape from reality; those who are not sports fans simply do not get it.

Thank you Celtics from myself, my youngest sister and my Mom.

Some historical context for this great season. https://www.theringer.com/nba/2024/6/18/24180728/boston-celtics-nba-champions-jayson-tatum-jaylen-brown. My favorite stat:

The Celtics outscored teams in the regular season by 11.3 points per game, the fifth-largest margin ever, and they followed up with a plus-8.1 differential in the playoffs. From opening night through the last buzzer of the Finals, Boston outscored its opponents by 1,083 total points—the fourth-highest raw point differential in NBA history, one spot behind the best Durant-era Warriors squad.

For me the years it took to get here, one finals appearance and numerous ECF's, doubts, ups and downs, make this very sweet indeed. Great group of guys that are easy to root for, so glad that they got a ring and should have a good chance at more.

This would be a whole lot sweeter if they didn't no-show that game against the Lakers in February. /s
You joke, but I am 100% of the opinion that the 3 games that colored the national discourse about the Celtics (this year - the real damage was done in prior years) were the 2 Denver games, and this Lakers game.

Much like my children, I can't compare them, but this team was right up there with the peak Belichick / Brady Patriots and the 2004 and 2018 Red Sox as being the most damn fun team to follow, night-in and night-out, for the last 8 months - the equal of any team during Boston's great 20-year run. It was literally a shock when they'd lose a game, like it was clear something was haywire because 95% of the time they ran rings around the opponent. Not even resting starters, even multiple starters, was enough for them to lose, because they had 6 guys who were fully capable of being stars on a thinner roster and taking a star's workload - indeed, several of them had been higher-usage guys that teams were built around in prior years. So it didn't matter who was out, the others could naturally step up, we really never missed a beat. There was never a single game you saw on the calendar where the circumstances made you think "eh, this one's gonna be a stinker". Even the Bench Mob games for G81 and G82 were wins by 33 and 10 points, with the top 8 guys all cheering and going nuts on the bench and just having the best time. Yes, part of that is down to Joe Mazzulla, but the players had to not just buy in but also keep that focus and bring their best nearly every time they stepped on the court.

I think that's part of what made this squad feel so much like the 2008-2012 Big Three team - they all loved each other, loved playing for each other, and that love was infectious. It certainly infected a lot of us around here. We'd have White make some gratuitous blocks or steals in a game long decided, just because he can and the game isn't over. There were one or two nights where they showed up and just didn't have it, but even in the smallest games, at the smallest moments, they were always balling for each other and giving what they had to give. Remember the three starting pitchers walking out to the bullpen during extra innings of 2004 ALCS Game 5? Lowe, Wakefield, and somebody else, I forget who, but that was a moment that brought us chills. Well, that sort of commitment to each other was on display every night with these guys, was set before the season with the sacrifices they promised to make, and man did it create a joy to watch.

The stat that I love from last night's game is that all five starters had eight or more rebounds. That seems truly emblematic of a team effort on both ends.

Yeah. The NBA went through a pretty ugly period in the 2010s I think, where it seemed like most championship teams were quickly assembled super teams and that became the way you needed to win in the NBA. Things have changed over the past few years, when you look at the last three champions in Milwaukee, Denver, and now especially this Celtics team. They had to grow and grind over the years and that made the path to success so much sweeter.

I was always against trading Brown, especially two years ago when the "Brown for Durant" rumors were going around. Even if Durant was a better player at the time, I wanted to see THIS team win it all, because we watched them grow from day one. It's been a really special ride.

Three things that I have been thinking about this morning:
1. JB at #3. At the time, I thought this was a two person draft with Simmons and Ingram and of course, the Cs were going to miss out. Could not have been more wrong. I am happy to see JB grow, thrive and now be a Finals MVP for Boston. Especially given that a couple years ago, it did not seem like he even wanted to be in Boston.
2. The Kemba-Horford trade. I loved Kemba and wanted to see him do well for the Cs, but it was so clear that he was permanently injured and was never going to be the guy he was in Charlotte. Good on Stevens for recognizing that it wasn't going to work and stapling a first rounder to Walker to bring back Horford, who was languishing in OKC. Honestly, I feel that is not a trade Ainge would have made - he would have hoped Kemba would get better, saved the pick and tried to treat Kemba as an expiring later.
3. These guys all seemed to legit enjoy playing with and for each other. It was awesome to see a total team.

This Cs team has better top players than that Pistons team, but this feels like it's the most "team" champion since then maybe. Though maybe I'm being unfair to the Warriors and Spurs.

Appreciate the result obviously and echo the sentiments of joy in watching some of these guys grow up together. We've invested emotionally in them.

Favorite memory of this run will be how they won it as a unit. They support each other, look out for each other, and make each other better. Guys step up when needed, but there is truly no "I" in this team. It's remarkable.

I love this story and the others like it we've read. It's nowhere near as deep or consequential for me, but the first half of 2024 has been a challenge with high school applications for a daughter with autism, managing that daughter's daily struggles with basic self-care, moving into a rental while we started an 8-12 month construction project at our home, a bevy of crushing workplace stresses that included my practice group leader getting canned (long overdue--his ineptitude was a source of a lot of my stress) and bureaucratic frustrations that come with BigLaw. I came to a realization this year that outside of my family and friends, I don't have a ton of sources of joy. But one of those sources was the Celtics--for me, they were appointment viewing all season. My kids know how to mimic Eddie Palladino's "JT for threeeeeeee", they're both wearing championship gear this morning, and I'm enjoying a good day.

The cradle of the game.
As a regular season casual fan now, processing the season, playoffs, Game 5 really didn't begin for me until this afternoon. I hadn't lived and died with every Celtic game since Larry retired, honestly. But I suppose like those who find warmth and comfort occasionally returning to the church of their past - sitting in the same pews, gazing out through the same ancient stained glass windows, with memories that go back decades - so has become my relationship with the Boston Celtics.

Still in a sleep-deprived daze, "Siri, play 'We are the Champions,'" I mumbled on my way to lunch today. That's when it all came together. Cornbread in '81 (when that song was still becoming a celebratory hymn) DJ's steal, KG's elation, McHale's footwork, DW's tip in last year, Pritchard's heave, Larry doing everything... it all came rushing back in non-linear waves of glory. I had walked back into my church... "hey, look over there, JT is hoisting Deuce... in a dense blizzard of green and white confetti... a big, satisfied a smile on Al's face. The new with the old, I became awash in its welcoming embrace once again.

I will go to my grave with the Sox, but this decades-long Celtics ride has been a special kind of spiritual. We are so very fortunate.

Jrue's 3 years in the playoffs with Milwaukee: 17.9 ppg, .476 TS%
Jrue's 1 year in the playoffs with Boston: 13.2 ppg, .615 TS%

I don't if it's a sample size thing, the significantly lower usage (7 fewer shots per game in the playoffs), if the looks he got in Boston were better or if he somehow just improved at age 33, but I've got a couple of Bucks fans in my life that were shocked by how efficiently he scored in these playoffs (they loved him, but they definitely saw him as a higher volume version of Smart in the spring).

One thing that's really cool is that I think this Celtics team is really a bunch of (obviously from a distance) pretty likeable guys. Tatum, Holiday, White, Horford, KP especially - all of them seem like really humble, pretty normal people that would be cool to hang out with. I'm not 100% sure on Brown - he seems a bit like a killjoy at times - but he still seems like a very decent person. Compared to some of the other NBA superstars, they seem like quite a contrast.

Not sure if you were here, bur there was a "care takers of the Ben Simmons draft pick" thread or something like that all season....

JB: Can't shoot. Can't dribble. Can't pass. Too smart.

Our jb is an assassi, scouting report missed that.

I think when Jaylen was drafted, he was noted for his tremendous athleticism, but his basketball skills were pretty raw compared to the other candidates. the C's must have seen some quality in him, most likely when they interviewed him, that his attitude and mindset would propel him to work hard on developing his skills and reaching his full potential. So I think they gambled on that overcoming any concerns they had with him. So faith, consistency, and hard work did pay off!

I wanted Jaylen in that draft because his work ethic was already well known, and that Cal system was a talent suppressing nightmare. I was higher on him going into the draft than I was after a year or two lol.

I would have been fine with Murray at the time, but damn I did not want Dunn.

Lots of appreciation to go around.

If I have to pick one person to thank most, it’s Danny Ainge. Generic GM X ends up with Fultz and someone not named Jaylen Brown in those 2 drafts (not to mention how he got those picks in the first place!)

Brad has been amazing, what a hire at the right time. But his all-time great tinkering on the margins doesn’t work to this degree without Tatum and Brown.

In a recent interview Danny said they had him top 2-3 on their draft board coming out of high school before his freshman year at Cal.

He said Cal had terrible shooters and big slow centers that clogged everything up for Jaylen. Sounds like it was their preseason rankings mixed with dominant individual pre draft workouts.

They basically didn’t care that he wasn’t very good at Cal…. Smart move.

Gotta say I love how Jaylen turned out, he was such a gifted athlete coming out of Cal, but he could have been Kedrick but matched the Jimmy Butler comps and then some. I remember a ton of discussion on Dunn et al., and for a little while it was looking like maybe their other target, Jamal Murray might have been the right pick. But he worked harder than any of us could imagine and got here. Such a contrast to Ben Simmons.

And Tatum, I’m glad Danny was so enamored that he said F off to all the Fultz fans, which I was definitely one. Just two perfect draft picks back to back in allegedly two player deep drafts. And Brooklyn, Philly, and LA fans all have to rue what transpired.

I'd throw JB right in that good guy group too. He took the leadership reins and went out of his way to talk up every Cs player during the limited mic'd up moments we got. I'm sure we'll see more in this HBO documentary. He's a smart, complicated guy, but I don't think in any way an outlier on this team. They all seem really well connected, supportive, no drama guys.

I feel like there's two people that aren't in the org anymore that really need to be offered rings -- I doubt they'd take them, but you never know.

Ainge and Marcus. This title simply does not happen without them. Ainge built so much of this team, he's the reason they drafted Tatum and Jaylen, he's the reason why Al came here in the first place. And Marcus.... while he was a wildcard on the court, he set the tone for this franchise for years. He's the reason they did so many of the good things they did for so long.

I imagine this won't happen, but those guys absolutely are a huge part of why this team won. I will love those guys -- and IT4 -- forever for what they did for this organization.

Yeah, Jaylen is less publicly charismatic than JT, but he's incredibly smart, thoughtful, and outspoken about social issues. He's a mensch, through and through. He's not like JT or some of the other guys in terms of media stuff, but everything I've ever read about him (which is pretty much everything) is that he's a very good dude. Heck, he's my favorite player on this roster. Love me some Jaylen.

As noted above, I think what attracted DA to JB was his drive and work ethic. I've said in the past but putside of injury, it's rare for a guy with his physical gifts plus his work ethic not to have a long, NBA career. I'm not saying I thought he'd be this good, but I was pretty sure JB wouldn't be a bust.

In MIL, particularly during the playoffs when Middleton was hurt, Jrue had a lot of occasions where he had to try to create his own shot. Jrue is great, but I think he's miscast as a second scorer on a team. He's much better using his ability to read plays and movement to be a complimentary guy, not a guy who has to reate his own shot when the shot clock is winding down.

His shots were so much better here, it's not even comparable.

Tagging @deanx0 too for max visibility.

Fifth such game in NBA playoffs history, joining the 1989 Suns (twice), 1973 Bulls, and 1972 Hawks (against the Celtics!). Only such game in NBA Finals history.
Suns did it back to back on the road @ oakland, 65 + 67 total team boards. Hornacek and Kevin Johnson the backcourt.

This is also why Jrue for FMVP was always laughable to me. He's a great player, but he benefits so, so much from not needing to be a 1 or 2 option.

around the way
I wanted Jaylen in that draft because his work ethic was already well known, and that Cal system was a talent suppressing nightmare. I was higher on him going into the draft than I was after a year or two lol.

I would have been fine with Murray at the time, but damn I did not want Dunn.
That was me too (except I didn't get as bearish as you after year 1/2). I would have been ok with Murray but preferred Brown. Wasn't interested in the other available options whatsoever.

Ainge and Marcus absolutely deserve some love too. Ainge as Duquette was a great parallel, except if Dan had also been responsible for Tito. Built the framework, set culture, brought in Brad, aced two #3 picks in successive drafts. Marcus is like the older brother who set things up and then moved out to his own place. He helped with culture and development, and the guys were able to take even another step after he was gone. I'll always be thankful to him. Some love too for the others in this run who didn't make it to the top of the mountain.

where the darn libs live
It's a good bet. I'm talking about whether he deserved to win it, even after just game 2 when it was being talked about.
Yeah that’s fair enough. My bet went from +3500 mid g3 to +900 and was given a really nice unit play if I cashed it out early before g4. Clearly the books were spooked and l probably should have taken it. Whoops!

Truly believe this is one of the most complete great teams from 1st to 6th best players - all 6 can give you all star caliber minutes. Obviously, KP and Al's minutes are limited, and the minutes you get from DW, Jrue and Al are more of the do-it-all, lockdown defense underappreciated variety than the POINTZ variety. But, all six players give you great defense and very efficient high-level offense & passing, with the Jays and KP shouldering most of the usage. Hard to think of another championship team that was comparably good through the 6th man - best comps are probably the pistons championship and the '80s celtics teams. Most great championship teams only give you this kind of depth quality through about the 4th man.

Lots can change but pretty bullish that this team can sustain a great run long-term with DW and the Jays as the core. Over the next few years, Al, Jrue and KP need to be replaced via trade when Jrue starts to decline, KP starts getting too injured and Al retires.

Agree with this. My way of looking at this is that they are the best shooting starting 5 in NBA history plus they were the best defensive team in the NBA this year (notwithstanding that MIN was ranked #1 in some metrics). When they locked in - as they did in the playoffs - they were scary good on defense, particularly when KP was available. with JB playing on-ball defense like he was, they had 3 all-NBA defensive level players out there plus JT, who can guard almost everyone, plus KP.

Not sure if you were here, bur there was a "care takers of the Ben Simmons draft pick" thread or something like that all season....

JB: Can't shoot. Can't dribble. Can't pass. Too smart.

Our jb is an assassi, scouting report missed that.
Ha, I wasn't (I've only been here maybe a year plus, as a Deadspin exile). I was initially disappointed in the pick only because it wasn't the top 2 guys, but now... damn. This year JB showed everything you could want: aggression on offense, good decisions, calm demeanor, great D. He could easily take over games JT wasn't on and I think that the two of them have a good working relationship that way.
It's funny now because I am immensely glad that JB is a Celtic over Simmons and Ingram, even if the latter has been a solid to great player.

The thread started at the start of the season, I can't quite remember all the posts, but i think it was a "following the top prospects thread".

JB has hit like a 90th percentile projection. There was no reasonable expectation he'd turn out like this. He has worked and I guess you can test for grit and work ethic and project some improvements. And he certainly still flakes off the ball on d, or occasionally picks up the ball with no shot/pass. he has turned himself into an assassin, a true killer. And there are likely tricks for him still to learn.
