Wow, that's a pretty big contract for a cash-strapped Rays team, especially for a soon to be 34-year-old outfielder with a career 106 OPS+. I haven't seen much of him in the field (apart from against the Sox). Is he all that and a bag of chips?

It's $9.5 total for 2 years, in case that isn't clear.

$4.25M + $5M + $0.25M signing bonus.

Marlon Byrd went yard in the only Mets game I went to last year. They lost.

Nick Punto is now an Oakland A. He signed for one year with an option for 2015 based on the number of head first slides into first base.
The sources are numerous.

He's also trending on Twitter. Take a screencap, Nick, probably the last time for that.

Hudson to Giants - 2/$23
David Murphy to Cle 2/$12 (with 3rd year option)
Josh Johnson to SD 1/$8 (and Passan reports that if Johnson makes fewer than 7 starts in 2014, a 2015 club option for $4mm gets triggered, Lackey-style)

All of these could be steals...or meh.  Murphy needs to bounce back from a poor 2013 and Hudson and Johnson need to get healthy.

Wow, the Padres rotation has the potential to be outstanding. This is assuming health and that the young guys like Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross continue to progress. They now have a surplus of starters if you include all the young, unproven yet high ceiling guys. I wonder if they'll deal a young pitcher for a left handed bat? They are now a bat or two, a  backup infielder, a loogy, some health, some chemistry and some luck away from a playoff spot.

Edit: I was just in Vegas and bet that the Padres would win the NL Championship (50/1) and the World Series (100/1). Those odds seemed way low to me then. I bet they just got a lot higher.

David Freese to the Angels for Peter Bourjos

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10019135/los-angeles-angels-trade-peter-bourjos-st-louis-cardinals-david-freese

/edit..Cards are also sending Fernando Salas to the Angels and receiving 22 year old outfield prospect named Randal Grichuk, who was actually the pick right before Mike Trout (Anaheim had two consecutive picks in the draft).

Freese battled a back injury this year.  If he gets over that then he could be a pretty good addition (high OBP, some pop), but back injuries tend to be chronic and get worse over time.

I am not all that impressed by Bourjos, so I am glad that it looks like the Red Sox won't be acquiring him this year like they had been rumored to be looking into.

I would start by reassessing your expectations of Peralta. He's a slightly better version of Drew, maybe a bit worse if you want to adjust for steroid concerns. The Red Sox were willing to go 1/$14m for Drew, Fangraphs crowd-sourced an annual value of about $11m. Those numbers seem pretty reasonable.

Not necessarily. If the crazy team with the crazy offer is no longer at the crazy table (STL), Boras and Drew only have the sane teams to deal with.

I'm guessing Boras was either posturing or the other team that offered him the other deal was a train-wreck (Astros or Mets) and that's why he signed with the Cardinals.

Yea it's either this...or the other team wanted him to play third base/left field and he probably wasn't willing to change positions unless the offer was significantly larger.

Irony
General manager John Mozeliak said Monday that Peralta had admitted wrongdoing and served his penalty, and that the Cardinals weren’t about to appoint themselves “morale police,” seeming to mean principles rather than enthusiasm. Mozeliak said the club was confident this was an isolated circumstance.

“Character and makeup are something we weigh into our decision-making,” Mozeliak said. “In his case, he admitted what he did, he took responsibility for it. I feel like he has paid for his mistakes, and obviously if he were to make another one, then it would be a huge disappointment.”
