To better understand the sport, I can't really help, but if you ever have any questions you want to ask, feel free to post them, and I'm sure myself and a few others would be happy to help if we could.

As for sites, for me, the diary when I'm looking at historical information on horses, or looking to handicap a race, is equibase.  You can get prior results, breeding lines, workout times, etc. for every horse in the country at any time.  It has the cards and morning line odds for every race at every track, and then shortly after has the charts for each race.  It's free for the most part, but there is a subscription fee for more information, although I don't use that.  It also has lifetime and current stats on stables, owners and trainers too.  For actual betting, I mostly use a private site, but I also go directly through TVG.  There isn't a lot of value on TVG that you can't get from equibase other than the immediate odds going right up to race time, and live video of each race from most tracks.

Beholder is a 6/5 favorite right now in the Pacific Classic. I'd love to see a mare win it, even if this is a somewhat week field.

WOW. She absolutely dominated. Great ride by Gary Stevens, and she just missed the track record.

Beholder has been scratched from the Breeders Cup Classic. Very disappointing, as I would have loved to see her go head-to-head with AP, but glad to see her connections putting her health first.

Did anyone see the Distaff? I bet the 9 to W/P and also boxed 1/4/9 exacta. It came in 4/9. There was an objection that the 4 bumped the 9. They left them up. My question is if they called a foul on the 4 would they have just switched them around or would the 4 come totally off the board? Happy with the outcome but if they just swapped them would've been even better.

I didn't see it live but you can watch a replay here (though it doesn't include any coverage of the objection). Assuming it was just between the two of them, if the claim were upheld, the 4 would have been placed behind the 9. This is California's language but it's generally applicable:

Rule 1699 (a) “A horse shall not interfere with any other horse. Interference is defined as bumping, impeding, forcing or floating in or out or otherwise causing any other horse to lose stride, ground, momentum or position. (b) A horse which interferes with another as defined in subsection (a) may be disqualified and placed behind the horse so interfered with if, in the opinion of the stewards, the horse interfered with was not at fault and due to the interference lost the opportunity for a better placing according to the distribution of the purse or order of finish in a trial heat.”

I didn't see a lot of contact--would have been interested to see the coverage.

Probably should have posted earlier, but one of my horses, Fusiachi Red, is racing in the last at Keeneland in about 4 minutes.  Currently at 5 to 1 in the 100k Fort Springs Stakes.

She ran out of gas. Might have had a chance at 5 1/2.

Was kind of a strange ride.  She's typically a finisher, and runs better in 7 furlongs or more.  Her stakes win, she came from 10 lengths back to win by about 4 lengths in a longer race.  Seemed like Bravo decided to run her near the front from the beginning.   Anyway, on to the next.  Great day of racing to watch, and Pharaoh was amazing.

I haven't been able to get out to the track much, but hope to do so in the next few weeks. If someone wants to start the new thread before then, feel free.

In the meantime, California Chrome is back big, winning the Dubai World Cup going away from the #11 position. Special horse.

Songbird won the Santa Anita Oaks easily yesterday on a sloppy track. Connections are still pointing her to the Kentucky Oaks, not the Derby, and I haven't heard them give a reason why.

If Trojan Nation and My Man Sam could come in 1 and 2, that would be kind of awesome for me.

When was the last time there was a 2-1 in the derby?

Rough start - two horses have died in early race today (one fell and was euthanized on the track, the other won but collapsed after the picture taking.

A good friend is a horse trainer here and he texted me just now that this surface isn't fit for racing. Said if he had a horse he'd pull out - "this will sucks shoes off, more stress on their tendons as they try to lift their fees out of it, etc."

Couple of those horses looked like they'd never seen mud before. But Exaggerator looked right at home. Little worried about getting around Lani but after that no problems.

I was in out all day yesterday. Put on the races around 2 or 3 for a bit. I was surprised to see Stradivari was the favorite at the time. Was wondering how that happened. Came back in time for the race and saw Nyquist was back to the favorite and Stradivari was back to 7-1. I saw today some guy placed an $80k on Stradivari.

Bad ride by Nyquist's jockey. Exhausted him in the first half mile.
Totally agree. He could have just settled him into second right on the rail and had an easy trip. The only thing I can think of is that he was so worried about how Nyquist was going to run with mud in his face that he tried to force his horse to the top and couldn't get there.

I spent the day at the track for the first time in about a year, and made myself wonder why I've been away. Four G1 races at Santa Anita on the first day of opening weekend, and I got to see Calfornia Chrome run away with another one, and Beholder get upset. Plus win a few hundred bucks, watch the Michigan Game, and get a pleasant buzz.

I didn't bet any exotics but I had Obviously, Highland Reel and Arrogate, so I came out ahead on the day. Would have done a fair bit better if I hadn't talked myself off of Finest City. (TVG had a neat promotion where if you placed a win bet on a Breeder's Cup race [up to $15] and your horse ran second or third, you got your bet back, so at least the wager I placed on Paulassilverlining instead was a wash.)

I think classic empire makes a comeback, and Patch is the feel good story. Also pulling for Battle of Midway to show for my Navy friends.

Forgot to post when the season started. Let the upstaters know if you're going to Saratoga. I make a few days a season. Ran into Dave Portnoy this morning.
