It may not have had the insanity of Josh Hamilton's derby, but overall this goes down as my all-time favorite.  The new rules made things a million times better.  Replace Berman with Gus Johnson and this thing is perfect.

edit: somehow I forgot about 1999 at Fenway for a minute.  This is right up there with it, personally.

I'm sure some of y'all already know this, but all 26 episodes of the original "Home Run Derby" have been uploaded to YouTube.

From start to finish I don't think I've ever enjoyed one more than tonight.
1999 in Fenway was awesome just because of all the heightened testosterone levels, but tonight was fucking great for sure.

This new format is a keeper.  And the outcome couldn't have worked out better for MLB.

Agree completely. There have been some great individual moments in these things through the years, but I don't think I actually enjoyed the entire event as much as I did tonight.

Except, of course, for Berman

In the middle of watching Rizzo flame out because he was going too fast I thought this was going to be terrible. After that it was incredible. Damn near every matchup was right down to the end. The new format grew on me in a hurry.

I think the times per round was perfect. Byte last minute changes for weather worked well. 5 minutes would have been too long.

The best part about Berman was when they'd switch over to Ravech.
I'll take Berman over Harold Reynolds all day and twice on Sunday. Aaron Boone with his nasally voice is hard to listen to, although his "content" is OK.

The format was great. The only time I thought it might be too long was after the first round. I thought they might drag out the rest but that didn't happen.

“@jonweisman: I’d say odds are 50-50 that someone’s going to write a column for tomorrow saying that baseball should have a game clock instead of innings.”
not a cloumn but Marc Bertrand on 98.5 just said "They used a clock to save the home run derby, they should use one to save baseball." Of course this was a takeaway point and he didn't elaborate but i'm sure the sentiment is out there

Isn't MLB experimenting with the use of a clock for intervals between pitches? I don't know if that's gone beyond the minor leagues, though. Those moves, including the ones about stepping out of the box, are ok with me. Transforming the game to fit into a total time-frame, not at all.
