Holley and Keefe with Dale

But does anyone know what accounts for the suddenness of all this? He leaves on a Wednesday with no notice to the listeners. I am not assuming anything bad, but it’s a bit strange.
It was the last day of the month, and I don't think Holley wanted an extended sendoff. Maybe that's the extent of it?

Keefe was laughing last night about the ratings book closing Friday and how Holley tributes could have juiced the numbers today and tomorrow.

If I ran 98.5 I would offer Holley a huge contract to pair him with Felger and dump Tony Mazz. It would be the best sports radio show in the market.
I wouldn't rule this out and it's what I hope they end up doing because that would be a killer show and in the past Felger was better when he had someone challenging him.

Edit: Shit... dump/demote Murray and make it a 3 person show and force Mazz to actually put some thought into the show rather than just mail it in.

In Chad Finn's article, he also said Felger reduced his NBCSB role because of a new contract from Beasley that basically paid him enough to not be full time at NBCSB anymore.
That's exactly what happened. Beasley made it worth his while with the new deal he signed in January. I'd expect Holley to take over the Pats pre- and postgame shows.

I don't think that you can read too much into the engagement level of a show based on how many posts are in a thread. Most of the people in the Kirk-Callahan thread (like me for example) don't listen at all but are commenting on Kirk's latest antics. So good on him and his plan, I guess?

The reason why, I think anyway and I might be wrong, that not a lot of people discuss H/A/K is because it's a good way to pass the time and nothing they say is incendiary. I mean, if Holley wanted to play the "angry black commentator" character (ala Steven A. Smith) and wanted to be Farrakhan to Callahan's David Duke, I'm sure that this thread would have a lot more posts. But Holley didn't want to do that because he's not an asshole.

And that's the main reason why Michael Holley is going to be missed. On a station full of assholes, no-talents and retreads, Michael Holley (as well as Keefe and Arnold) seemed like good guys that didn't lower themselves to sewer radio. If that doesn't get people flipping out and posting on SoSH, so be it. That says more about Holley than Minihane, frankly.

Glenn Ordway always said that the guys on the Big Show were like the guys you sit next to at a sports bar. If Fred Smerlas or Larry Johnson or Steve DeOssie or any of those nitwits sat next to me at a bar, I'd move. But if Holley or Arnold or Keefe sat next to me, I'd stick around.
Agree wholeheartedly with everything here, but have to point out a bit of the hypocrisy with the comment from Ordway. I listened to him today playing the conjecture card about Gronk simply to stoke bullshit back and forth. He might not be quite as incendiary as those listed, but he’s no saint himself.

I might not have made this clear, but I think Ordway and his ilk suck. A number of years ago, Ordway said the philosophy of EEI was that it was like listening to a bunch of guys at a bar watching a game. You know, really guy-guy bullshit talk. And I think that EEI still clings to that philosophy.

My point is that I don't think that Holley subscribed to that philosophy, I think that he, Dale and Keefe were a bit more highbrow than that and that's why it was a good show. If I had heard Callahan and Kirk talking at a bar or Merloni, Ordway and Fauria talk at a bar, I'd leave. They're idiots. But if I heard H/A/K talking at a bar, I'd hang around because I could probably learn something.

With sports radio, I feel like it's a great show if the hosts are having a conversation I wish I could join; if it's one I mostly want to just listen to, it's still very good. But most Boston sports talk makes me want to leave as I make a mental note never to darken the door of this place again.

DHK consistently made me want to keep listening. I guess it's that simple.

You’ve nailed it again.

The Ordway bar had its halcyon days with Smerlas and DeOssie. If you had the temerity to criticize the Patriots, Freddie and Steve would beat you rhetorically to within an inch of your life. Glenn would prod them and laugh.

A nice gig at a salary of $1 million/yr — which Glenn screwed up, primarily by vacationing 150 days/year.

I haven't listened in a long time now, but this is exactly the way I view good sports radio as well. To me, the mark of a good show is how little they rely on call-ins to fill time, be they guests to interview or listeners giving opinions. I mean, the whole point of hot takez radio is to fire up the listeners and fill a couple hours with angry callers. Just sucks to listen to.

I tried to find it but couldn't online, but the whole Ordway "guys you want to go to a bar with, smoke some cigars" line T&R destroyed them for a full break about how awful Ordway was and no one wants to go to a bar with any of them.

Gotha. I thought you were attributing that last comment of the post to Ordway, not that it was your personal feeling. Misread you, apologies. Yes, you nail it for me perfectly.

I'm not as big of a Holley fan as most others on here, but this will be a MUCH welcomed change. I think he's better on tv than radio, personally.

I'm in the minority because of his past erroneous reporting, but wouldn't mind seeing John Tomase take over Holley's spot. He's reasonable, pretty well informed, doesn't scream, and may be the most thick skinned of all 'EEI guys.

The Patriot Monday interviews with Belichick might be more interesting...assuming Belichick would even sit down with the guy.

I feel like I should be confessing this to a priest, but I also like Tomase on EEI for all the reasons you mentioned. The weekend show he does with Trenni is by far the best non-Pats program on Saturday or Sunday—and yes, I know I’m not setting the bar very high

It sure is nice to see great things come to great people.

That’s the deal with him — things are as he said, and how they generally were reported to be. It all got to be too much, especially the schedule with a young family. No drama here. If somebody wants to throw his integrity and Chad Finn’s into question — that somebody has a natural home in the morning show.

I especially love no apologies for what his show was and hopefully will continue to be about.

Cannot think of a better person to teach beat writing.

This is great. When I was younger I met MH at a book signing at an odd time, so we had a chance to talk for a bit and he gave me some fantastic advice on writing - which I now teach at a university, so quite fitting to hear he will be teaching as well. Will miss him in the afternoon but looking forward to him remaining engaged.

I don’t understand how anyone can like Tomase. To wit, this is the worst piece of shit article I have read in years —>

Sox are 7-0 since Tomase wrote that steaming pile of crap about Cora.
From his article: "The good news is the Red Sox return to action on Friday and the Rays remain anonymously terrible. Boston could be 6-1 next week, making this one a footnote."

He'll probably say he was predicting it, but in reality it's why you don't write a stupid article like that after one game.
