Smoke signals seem to be Vrabel to Pats. I don’t get why they didn’t hire him last year or why Bobby is so quick to dump his guy but it is what it is. Hopefully Woody gets into a bidding war to at least make Kraft pay him a ton of money.

In some ways a CEO type to NE might be better for me than you guys gettin Liam Coen so silver lining and all that.
Mayo was the HC in waiting. There’s no way they were dumping him last year to hire Vrabel. It wouldn’t both have been a good look, at all.

Bringing McDaniels in as OC would seem like a good fit. Huge upgrade on AVP, can obviously work with young QBs, and he’s not a real risk to flee to a head coaching job in a year or two or even three.

I want Mayo gone as much as anyone but if it’s already a done deal with Vrabel then they’ve learned nothing. Unless him bringing along some legit exciting talent is also a done deal, which maybe …I don’t know. Let’s hope it works out. But at some point you need to engage with new people

If they do in fact move on from Mayo and staff, I wonder how much money it will cost as opposed to just paying the $10m last year to Mayo. What a dumb clause that was

He’s not part of the Patriots coaching tree. People need to get over that. He’s never coached here. He made his bones at Ohio State, Houston, Tennessee and Cleveland. While the Krafts have a relationship with Hingis only ties as a player. That’s it. That said yes please interview lots of candidates and if it still leads to Vrabel then so be it.

Yes I get that he’s not part of that tree, I was speaking to another hire without even talking to other people. Interview new talent. Then decide. Skipping that again would in my opinion be a huge mistake. What do I know, but they clearly need a massive infusion of new everything

Also, Vrabel just interviewed with the Jets, so in true recreating history and getting the band back together fashion, Kraft may be motivated by poaching an HC from the NYJ, again.

Bob Kraft is worth 11 Billion dollars. Whatever he has to pay here matters not.

Even assuming he has to come out of pocket for it, which isn’t even likely given league revenues and the Patriots payroll - it’s like most of us throwing a dollar or two in the Salvation Army bucket walking out of a grocery store.

It is always interesting to me both with Kraft and Henry that fans care about their money. I assure you the only thing they care about ours is taking it.

I 100% agree. I could care less about the money but Kraft certainly does. Like it or not.

He hired Matt LaFleur as his first OC and then had Arthur Smith who did go on to be a HC himself. I’m not worried about him finding the OC. He has a good network around the league and is a respected coach. If he has Drake Maye he can get a pretty good OC in my opinion.
Hi next 2 (Downing/Kelly) were rough. But generally yeah, I don't worry too much about him finding an OC (sneakily, I think he would consider keeping AVP, stylistically they like to do similar things). I would worry more about the problem he had with LaFleur/Smith... losing them every year or 2 for HC jobs if they do well.

Yep. Many, many people at the time thought Harry had a lot of strengths that would make him a good NFL receiver. He was highly rated by a lot of pundits and "experts". Turns out he just sucked (at the NFL level, not the college level, of course). It happens.

The mystery to me about Polk is his hands. He was incredible at catching passes in college. Outstanding hands. But man that part of his game just vanished in the pros. I don't know why that skill would disappear. Playing against better corners explains why it's harder to get separation, but it doesn't explain why he suddenly would have a problem catching the football.
i think polk a light problem ......he seldom if ever got lit up in college.........the nfl ia a different animal.the players in the pros are bigger, faster, stronger and hit way harder than college players do.polk used to get separation in college....catch the deepball.....and stroll 60 yards into the endzone untouched.now he is getting hit hard on every play.

The reason I want Vrabel is simple: you win in the trenches. His OLs and DLs in Tennessee could move mountains. I know he worked in combination with the FO on that, but I remember seeing those lines and being in awe of their size and physicality.

That also happens to be where this team needs the most work and coaching. If he’s hired, I would love for him to hire McD just because we know what we’d be getting and I’d trust McD with Maye.

Or, Kraft is trying to bait the Jets into a quick hire of Vrabel. Yes, unlikely.

late in his tenure their Oline was the worst in the league. I think the reason to hire Vrabel is he's respected his teams play hard and he's generally pretty good at onfield decison making

The same could have been said about Bill Belichick back in 2000.

#1 pick with Mayo or #4 pick with new coach?
Why not both? They aren't dependent variables.

But if they were... #1 pick, you can fire Mayo next year, getting extra assets by trading down from #1 is really good for the roster, and AVP/McCartney are at least doing a nice job developing Maye so he'll get 2 years of good development before the switch.

He had that moronic $10 million clause about becoming the next HC, so it was probably a combination of true belief in his coaching potential and not wanting to pay out that 10 milly.
Also, Vrabel could take a paid year off, recharge his batteries, and take his pick of openings. Mayo has been ML Carr all along - a cheerleader coach when the franchise is at a low point. Sadly, ML got two years.

Mayo has been ML Carr all along
ML was hired with an understanding with ownership and front office that the goal was to tank for Tim Duncan

Mayo-- based on today's game-- has had zero interest in losing games on purpose. He just coached that Pats to win a meaningless game and is talking to the press like a guy who expects to be fired soon

I’m an empathetic guy, but I’m oddly excited for people to lose their minds about Mayo taking a victory lap in his post game presser. Did he do that?!

He did not

If anything, he sounded like a guy who expects to get fired. Or, at least, is tired and looking forward to the offseason.

Talked in a flat voice about how you always play to win. Asked about next year says "at some point" he's have his "normal meeting with the Krafts"

No victory lap

Hence ML got a second season, and Mayo got fired when the clock hit double zero.
