I really appreciate Kaat's talking about how lucky he's been. Lots of people born on third base think they hit a triple (thank you, Ann Richards).
You could see her take an extra beat right before "and the rockets red glare" line, probably saying "please don't miss this note," then went on to miss the note... and a few more afterward. Moral of the story: when you're rolling, don't stop to think, just keep rolling. She probably hits the notes if she just stays in the zone she was in. You can't blame her for nerves, though, considering.First 1/3 or so of the song was very good then got a bit screechy in parts. Not a fan of the personal spin put on her rendition.
So long ago...of course, so was 2004.You talking about Mr November?
Cuban Comet, iirc. A HOF-worthy nickname.
Eckersley! So many "end of career" HOF guys who went to the Red Sox at the tail end
Dawson
Rickey
Smith
Seaver
other guys I must be missing.
Tony PerezEckersley!
Also Marichal, and kinda sorta Fergie Jenkins
And the Baby Bull, Orlando Cepeda.Eckersley!
Also Marichal, and kinda sorta Fergie Jenkins
I told that story to my wife (Kaat looking very dominant as the SP against the Sox in the next to the last game and then having to quit with the sore arm).Interesting cream colored suit
Thanks for getting hurt at he end of 67, Jim.
Thanks for being for the voice of playoff baseball when I was growing up
I have signed pics of Ortiz, Brady, Orr, and Bird. If I ever save up enough money I'll have them archival-framed as my Mt. Rushmore. What an emotional day this is. There is no one player more important to the history of this franchise than David Ortiz. Him and Tom Brady are my sports heroes and one is going into the Hall today. It just goes to show you how incredibly lucky we were to have those two guys change the course of Boston sports history simultaneously. My Mount Rushmore will have 2 spots until somebody else is worthy enough to join them. Congrats 34. No one deserves it more than you.
The stars are under shade, but I cannot imagine sitting out in the sun for this, wonderful as it is at times.I love this speech by Tony Olivia, but it's getting really fucking hot waiting for Papi!
God bless him. He's waited a long time for this and deserves his moment, but it's gotta be pretty bad out there in the heat for those waiting for Ortiz.I love this speech by Tony Olivia, but it's getting really fucking hot waiting for Papi!
Nah, these stories need to be heard not buried. They got to do this like the Grammys
Modern/normal admissions in the main ceremony
Veterans committee the night before
/kidding, sorta
Even E5 Yaz isn’t watching them live, thoughNah, these stories need to be heard, not buried.
Agreed, it's as much a history lesson as it is anything else. This is a remarkably talented class of Hall of Famers this year. I've enjoyed this day more than most I can remember, and I've shed many a tear watching and listening. God help me I love this game.
His niece gave a fantastic speech, but it remains unconscionable that he was not inducted in 2006 when he could have given the speech himself. So many of the Negro League greats have Buck O'Neil to thank for keeping their stories and legacies alive. Buck O'Neil was an not just an incredible champion for the Negro Leagues, but also an ambassador for the game of baseball and made it his life's work to promote the two as one. I need to find my way to Kansas City.
Indeed. LOVE that guy!Speaking for myself, I first really learned of Buck ONeil because of his extraordinary presence in Ken Burn's Baseball documentary of some 30 years ago. He was magnificent and today is long overdue.
Yep, he deserved that moment and I have a feeling it would have been one of the all time great HOF speeches. His niece gave a fantastic speech, but it remains unconscionable that he was not inducted in 2006 when he could have given the speech himself.
