Hildemaro Requena
Born July 20, 1997
RHP
Currently listed at 6-2, 170
Signed as an international free agent from Maracay Venezuela, July 2013

Sox Prospects scouting report:
"Right-hander with an average pitcher’s frame with some projection in his lower half. Fastball sits 88-90 mph. Best secondary is a changeup 82-83 mph with some fade. Also will show a curveball in the mid-70s."

In 222 career IP, he is 16-11, 2.24 with 177K and 65 BB.

Career stats here.

Requena went 11-3, 1.98 in 95.1 IP for Class A Greenville this year, with 84K and 31 BB.

In winning a playoff elimination game against the NYY Charleston affiliate last weekend, Requena threw 7.1 scoreless IP, allowing 4 hits and three walks while striking out 4.

He's been on fire lately, not allowing a single earned run over his last five starts and 32.1 innings.

Alex Speier writes: "In nine starts since moving to the rotation, the 20-year-old is 8-0 with a 0.51 ERA on the strength of his aggressive strike-throwing with a three-pitch mix that features a heavy diet of his
breaking ball and changeup."
http://Requena (11-3) continued to show his development. After spending much of the season in the bullpen, he received a chance to start after several other pitchers earned promotions to higher minor league levels. On Saturday, Requena held the RiverDogs scoreless by limiting them to four hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings. Requena, 20, has not allowed an earned run in a month, a span of 36 1/3 innings during which opponents have managed only 15 hits. He struck out four Saturday, but more important to his pitching, he got 12 outs on groundballs. "He's a great example of a pitcher who says, 'Ready, here it is, hit it,' " Fenster said. "He's going after the hitters with (pitches that) sink and trusting his defense behind him." Requena left in the eighth ahead 2-0 but with two runners on base. Joan Martinez got a strikeout and a flyout to end Charleston's threat, and Dalbec then made it much harder for the RiverDogs to threaten Greenville's lead again.

Requena got the start on Friday in the championship series, but it didn't go that well.

He had a 3-0 lead into the 3rd, but gave up a solo homer, then another solo blast in the fourth, then an RBI double to tie it.

In the fifth, he was pulled with 2 out and runners on the corners.

Not a disastrous start at all: 4.2 IP, 3 runs, 2 earned, walked 2 and fanned 3, but allowed 9 hits, 2 of them bombs. The runs he allowed were the first ones he's given up in a month, covering 5 starts.

An interesting and very young prospect to watch. Soxprospects has him currently ranked at #51, but rankings at the level can change dramatically.

Here is the link, which provides his stats to date. http://soxprospects.com/players/requena-hildemaro.htm

They look good, but it is Single A ball. He seems to be a guy worth watching. Thanks for the thread Gray Eagle.

Requena is in Salem this year, part of a young rotation that is barely legal to drink yet:

Darwinzon Hernandez (21 till December)
Tanner Houck (21 till Jun 29)
Roniel Raudes (20 till Jan.)
Bryan Mata (18 till May 3)
Requena (20 till July 20)

Those 5 young guns so far have pitched 27.1 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. They're walking too many (16 BB to 25 K) but getting great results so far.

Old Man Jake Thompson is also in the rotation but he is already 23 (till September 22). He's older than the others but was only drafted last year and has only tossed 21 innings as a pro. He's started twice this year so far, throwing 10.2 IP and allowed 5 ER, 5 BB and 6K.

This Sox Prospects article talks about watching Hildemaro Requena in spring training this year and is pretty consistent with what's been said about him so far:
"Requena’s frame and stuff don’t stand out, but he knows how to pitch and it is easy to see why he has been successful thus far.
Requena looks his listed 6-foot-2, 170 pounds. He could be a little heavier than that and is filled out with minimal remaining projection. Requena has feel for his three pitches and has the ability to throw any of them for strikes. He did a good job keeping hitters off-balance and minimizing hard contact over his four innings in the High A game, even with his fastball topping out at only 91 mph. Requena showed two average secondaries—a curveball at 75-76 mph and changeup at 82-84 mph. He showed confidence in both and a willingness to throw them in any count."

The article mentions that Requena might not be regularly starting for Salem, but may be used in a piggy-back long relief role, as they are pretty loaded with young starting pitcher prospects, but he did start in his only appearance so far.
