I'm not thrilled about this, obviously, but I'd be more upset if Ben had given him $150m with a very similar prearb player waiting in the wings.

Part of me wants the Sox to give Cano 5/125 to play 3rd just to screw with the Yankees. But this has the potential to be one of the worst signings of recent memory

That is going to be a very left-handed team.  If they get Cano back, the top six in the lineup include four LHH (with the switch-hitting Teixeira still to come).

Gardner LF
Jeter SS
Ellsbury CF
Cano 2B
Soriano RF
McCann C

Only if it doesn't bring them a championship.

The Red Sox show restrain and in doing so lose an overpaid, over extended, though good player to the Yankees.

The Red Sox changed their formula last year and it netted instant success. The Yankess are still doing the same old thing they always do. I, for one, and proud they are sticking to their guns.

Another knee jerk reaction from the Yankees after a Red Sox World Championship. In 2007 it was the A-Rod deal. I have a feeling this one will blow up on them as well. I can't see Ellsbury aging gracefully.

Well it's certainly reassuring that we will get the next Bryce Brentz or Pat Light on their dime! We've been cant miss in the 30-40s portion of the draft

7 years for Ellsbury and over 20 million per?  Yikes, Yanks will regret this one.

Any reason why the Braves get the first rounder and we don't?

No one gets their pick.  They lose a pick and the team that lost the player gets a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds.

Edit:  Beaten by several posters.

Let the JBJ era begin.

Perhaps.  Or Vic moves to CF and they sign Beltran.

Not thrilled but at that money, it's not worth it.

Hate to see Ells in pinstripes, but 7 years at that money.  Ouch.  Dude ain't exactly the Iron Horse.

Ahem, JA, thought you said that $189MM budget was real?

Yeah, no idea anymore about anything. I absolutely did not see this coming.

Over in the prediction thread, several nailed 7/150 but no one had the Yankees.

Dunno about "not worth it". Maybe not to the Red Sox at this moment, but the price of free agency is going up, as it should.

Someone should run the numbers, though. No A-Rod and no Cano still may leave them a good amount of space, even with McCann and Ellsbury.

It was clear he was gone from the moment he switched to Boras like Papelbon happily going to arb every year. Some guys want the payday and there is nothing wrong with that. Ben sticking to his mantra is the takeaway here. You gotta love that.

I really like Jacoby Ellsbury, but almost $22 million a year seems so idiotic.

1.) He's got a history of injuries. Sure, some of them seemed like freak accidents, but of his 7 seasons, 2 were hampered by injuries.
2.) A lot of his value comes from his speed. Players don't typically retain their elite speed from ages 30-37.
3.) Career OPS+ of 108. Ellsbury certainly has talent, but baseballreference has two seasons where he had a WAR of 5 or higher (which they consider "all-star" level). This is a huge risk because Ellsbury hasn't put up anywhere near the long term, consistent numbers to justify a contract like this. When Crawford was signed he had much more consistent success.

This contract is mind boggling. Why would anyone pay that kind of money for a player who doesn't have a consistent history of success, a projectable model for future success and off the charts character?

Exactly what the Yankees said they wouldn't do. Thanks for the memories Dreamboat.

.... and I am shocked there is gambling in this establishment.

I like Cashman.  I think he is a very competent, cool headed and decent guy.  But when has he not lied through his teeth about the Yankees' offseason plans?

It's like Charlie Brown, Lucy and the football.  The idiots are the ones who lend any credence to what Cashman says.

Does this put the Yankees out of the running for Cano?

Edit: Cot's has them at $100m on the books for 2014 going into the offseason
Yes, but that figure doesn't include McCann or Ellsbury or any of their arb and pre-arb guys like Gardner, Nova, and Robertson. Add those in, plus the part of the payroll that goes to benefits, and they're up to $170 million or so. Then they still need a second baseman, DH, starting pitcher or two, and bullpen help. That number does include A-Rod, but if they subtract him, then they need a third baseman as well. It seems either they don't sign Cano, or they forget about staying under the $189 million threshold.

absolutely, and now, hopefully, the sox can sign a cheaper position player (or two) and spend most of their money on pitching, both for the pen and possibly the rotation if one of the vets is moved, which is ironic, since what the Yanks seem to need the most is pitching.

This is basically perfect. I mean, it was almost inevitable.

I was at a Sydney Blue Sox game on the weekend and there was a kid around 8 wearing an Ellsbury t-shirt. I made a joke about him needing a new shirt soon and his dad glowered at me. I bet that fucker's apologetic now!

With Gardner, Suzuki, Ellsbury, and Wells, it looks like they have plenty of outfielders.

I'm not really upset, I figured he was gone anyway, but the Yankees unlimited payroll pisses me off. They sign A-Rod knowing he is dirty, get value for their dollar out of him for the first few years of a contract, and then it looks like when he won't be worth the money they're going to get away without having to pay him at all. It's such bullshit. They're essentially getting Ellsbury for 'free' because MLB has decided only to hold individual players accountable for PEDs, not the teams who subtly encourage their use. The Yankees are the real winners of the steroid era.

I don't care about losing him to the Yankees.  This is what happens.  It's like the scene in Dangerous Liaisons, where the old bat tells Uma Thurman to expect to get her heart broken by John Malkovich after falling in love with him, because this is the way men are and this is the way things work.

Expensive free agents from the Red Sox go to the Yankees because that's where the money is.  That's the way it works.  How many times have we seen this now?

I liked Ellsbury, but it's a massive overpay in both years and money.  I have no doubt he will have some success, especially in that park, but that deal is insane.

Just for the record:

2013 Ellsbury: 636 PA, 92 R, 31 2B, 8 3B, 9 HR, 53 RBI, 52 SB, .298/.355/.426, 5.8 rWAR
2013 Gardner: 609 PA, 81 R, 33 2B, 10 3B, 8 HR, 52 RBI, 24 SB, .273/.344/.416, 4.2 rWAR

I expected the Yankees to be the LAST team to get in on Ellsbury, because they already have an Ellsbury-Lite. That they'd drop $21.8/per on Ellsbury suggests that they're not concerned about the luxury tax.

Congratulations on your payday, Jacoby.  Thanks for the effort here.

{Ahem}

Of course he signed with the Yankees...
