I hate when announcers build up narratives. They were just saying how incredible it is that NYCFC could pull off a win in this game, what with the Revs being record-setters and not losing at home in the playoffs since 2002 (yeah, I was there - damn crossbar).

In reality, NYCFC has always had no less than, what, a 40% chance of winning coming in? It just wouldn’t be that wild for any MLS club to beat another in any given scenario.
Especially considering the much bigger upsets that happened in the West.

Damn, they went down the middle three times.
I told someone over text they were just going route 1 and they did it again. Good scouting by NYC to know he wouldn't stay home on the 3rd one.

That’s probably the wrong reaction given the season overall, but this was a dud of a gameplan for sure.
It’s a USMNT meme…. Joking….

Revs came out flat, that early goal was inexcusable. Played well, but no midfield most of the game. Letting it go to PKs is the same as letting it go to a coinflip

Wonder how much the 23 day layoff really hindered them. They looked so out of sync. Reminded me of a dud New Years day bowl game. That's quite a long layoff for a win or go home game for the one seed.

That is truly a weird bye system that doesn’t seem to help the bye teams.

This sucks. What a comedown after the late equalizer.

There’s a lot to be happy with about this season and the direction of the club, but this sucks.

Go Philly.

Can't believe I'm agreeing. At least Castellanos won't take part. What a pointless second yellow.
I mean, we’re talking about a team co-owned by the Yankees and the royal family of Abu Dhabi.

Hard to top that.

And strong agree on Castellanos.

Mornings like this make the European standard of a balanced schedule and a regular season champion seem far more appealing.

Condolences to Revs fans. What an amazing season. What a great squad. What a cruel fate.

Solving the long lay off for top seeds problem needs to happen. The season can’t start any earlier. I mean, Chicago’s home opener is March frickin’ 5th next year.

How about a playoff mini-league? Seed each conference 1-5, then play a single-game round robin on each side, all games at the home of each matchup’s higher seed. (So the Supporters’ Shield winners would play all matches at home.) Two group winners meet in MLS Cup at the home of the team with more regular season points.

Here's an amazing stat now that both New England and Colorado have been eliminated: in the last ten seasons including this one, a #1 seed has made it to MLS Cup only once (Toronto, 2017).

There are two #1 seeds every season (one East, one West). 19 of them failed to even make it to MLS Cup.

There's nothing official, but there's been some reporting that league may start earlier in February in 2023 when they have to schedule around the mid-season break for the expanded Leagues Cup.

I find it surprising that the No. 1 seed didn't advance all those years when they played two legs.

I think I'd like them to go back to two legs, but maybe the top seed gets two home games instead of a home and an away. Makes the race for the top spot mean more.

I’ve been banging this drum on SoSH for years now and so apologies if I repeat myself, but Liga MX Apertura Liguilla has a great format and it operates on the same timeframe as the MLS Cup finals, commencing after the last fall international break and concluding the second weekend of December. Liga MX tweaked the format this year with a single elimination “reclassification” round for teams that did not qualify directly to the quarterfinal, but from the quarterfinal on the format is as follows:
  • Team with more goals on aggregate after two matches will advance.
  • No away goals rule is applied in neither round, if the two teams are tied on aggregate, the higher seeded team advances.
  • In the final, if the two teams are tied after both legs, the match goes to extra time and, if necessary, a shoot-out.
I would probably tweak it to a single game final, but those rules would work great for the MLS conference semis and finals.

I threw this out in the MLS thread; I think a Page system could work. My idea would be something like this:

Matchday 1, weekend: 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 (elimination game, winners advance)
Matchday 2, weekend: 1 v 2 (seeding game, winner direct to final) and (3/6) v (4/5) (elimination game, winner to semifinal)
Matchday 3, midweek: 1/2 loser vs 3645 winner, elimination game with winner advancing to final
Matchday 4, weekend: Conference final

Goff reports Sebastian Lletget is heading back to New England (the club who discovered him, don’t you know?) for non-player trade assets in return.

Goff later said that it wasn't finalized but that there were serious negotiations happening. I'm intrigued.

It's hard to know whether Lletget would come in as an upgrade for Tommy Mac, or if there's a larger system switch with Tajon and possibly others leaving. Buksa would be the key domino here, because his departure may well lead to a switch away from a two-forward formation. In any case, 2021 hasn't been Lletget's best year by any stretch but maybe Bruce can rejuvenate him.

I’m not surprised that a generic MLS team would rather have some Garber tokens than actual cash from a foreign club, but I am surprised that a Kroenke-owned team opted for the allocation money.

Noel Buck '05 signs an MLS deal. I'm sure it's likely he'll spend most or all of next season with the second team in MLS Next Pro, but he's one of a couple of kids in the Revs academy whose names have a bit of buzz right now.

Same hometown (Arlington) and club team (Boston Bolts) as Miles Robinson. New England doesn’t have enough talent to be a homegrown powerhouse like FCD, but it’s imperative to make sure talents like Robinson or Buck don’t slip through the cracks.

It's hard to believe that we are less than one week away from the first competitive game of 2022. The Revs are hosting both legs of the CCL first round matchup against Cavaly AS because CONCACAF is not currently allowing CONCACAF games to take place in Haiti due to security concerns.

Assuming the Revs and Pumas advance, the second round will be tough. Two midweek games sandwiched between the 1st and 2nd league games of the season and the 2nd and 3rd midweek games of the season. Form and fitness will, as always for MLS clubs, be a huge issue in the early rounds of this competition.

Jozy is official. In the off-chance he stays healthy and in form, he'll be one hell of a pickup. If he's injured, we have some pretty good alternatives (though there's the opportunity cost of his salary cap hit to consider). Fingers crossed.

Altidore ? Is he still alive ? So, we will lose Turner and get Altidore ? Not sure what the Revs are doing. I get making money on a sale, but Altidore is in his twilight years, no ?

The Revs are getting Altidore at a much cheaper price than what Toronto has been paying for him. The team already has Bou and Buksa, so Altidore might even be coming off the bench, although he's also an insurance policy given the possibility that Buksa is sold this summer.

It's all about Jozy's health. If he's healthy, he'll be an asset.
