Isn't he still due that money? Someone (I'm guessing either the NFL or a judge) is going to have to make a ruling that he violated the conduct clause for the Patriots to not owe that to him. The biggest question to me is how quickly we'll get that ruling from the NFL as that'd be a nice chunk of money to use to go after Trent Williams.
No he is not due that money. Per his contract the first installment of his bonus was due Monday but there is specific language that states the contract voids over any "action that "undermines the public's respect for the team."

It is blindingly self-evident to everyone that the man is as self-aware and has the introspective powers of a clam. The fact that you think he will 'think' about this is only explainable by the fact that you still also take religion seriously, in some cases you just suspend belief in reality.
What?

In another thread I predicted he'd be gone in a couple of weeks due to his inability to refrain from texting/using social media.

OK, I thought that would involve such activities when he's supposed to be practicing or in team meetings.

At some point, he’s gonna have to decide where he goes or what he does.

And for the first time, joining the Patriots isn’t on the table. I think that would be hard to ignore.

I’m not saying he’s a thoughtful guy. I’m saying that this might finally be something that he can’t ignore. But we’ll probably never know. Unless he tells us on FaceChat or something.

I vote Jakobi Meyers for 6 on Sunday.
Surprisingly, Sony Michel has never caught a TB12 TD. He doesn't catch many passes period, but I have him as the best possibility to get number 73. After that I'll go with:

LaCosse
Meyers
Harry

Yes, but I would think AB can contest that. I don't think the Pats can just say it did and it's all better.

He caused more problems in a short span than all the other problem children combined over much longer spans. I hope they learn something from this.
Herandezsayswhat.

EDIT: They don't need to learn anything from this. Depending on how the salary cap plays out they got one of the best players in football on a reasonable contract and all the guy had to do was just be a normal asshole--as opposed to a witness intimidating lawbreaking sexual assault asshole--for as long as possible. Once it turned out that he was that much an ass they canned him.

I think he left them little choice with this latest issue, and selfishly, I'm glad I no longer have to root for this asshole. That said, I don't expect the team to get out of the business of taking calculated risks to obtain elite talent. This one blew up pretty badly, other have succeeded pretty spectacularly. As long as BB and TB are there, I still think they are uniquely positioned to take these kinds of risks. And today, though they will be pilloried for it in the short term by some in the media, actually shows a major strength of their operation; the ability to recognize and accept when someone isn't working out, and the willingness to then cut bait. Regardless of the investment in either $$ or draft pick.

Ok well back to the team that beat the Steelers by 30. It was worth the risk. Didn’t work out, he got cut, adios. Love on. No biggie. Losing the $$ hurts but isn’t too big a deal.
if it costs us any chance at getting Trent Williams and the OL is hampered by injuries all year, it could be a fatal mistake.

True. But it’s better to withhold the money than try to recoup it.

Incidentally, I have no idea what contract provision Red is referencing, so not commenting on whether the Pats have a good contractual basis to withhold the money.

No, I think their position would be not to pay him and see if he files a grievance and pursue that process. They would likely tell his lawyer that they intend to seek the other $4 mil because he failed to disclose the other baloney before signing. THat may not be required, but leverage-wise that's likely the negotiation

Honestly, his behavior comes across as a guy trying to intimidate an accuser than merely failing to keep his mouth shut.

That's a *huge* line to cross and does a lot to bolster the credibility of the accusations against him.

He is crazy and it was evident coming in. The helmet. The frozen feet. The tangos with Gruden and Mayock.

You don’t mess with crazy.

Hernandez was done and done in a matter of days. We never heard of his private pleas to Belichick.

I'm super relieved. This week was the first time it wasn't enjoyable watching NFL films after a Patriots win.

I wouldn't be shocked if he is a Chief by 6PM PT either.

Patriots Legend Antonio Brown.
At least he added to the total number of receivers Brady has thrown a touchdown to.

We'll always have #72.

I'm slightly surprised by this news, but not very (how could anyone be very surprised?). Hope we can figure out some way to get cap relief.

Also, I wouldn’t be too quick to spend any of that money paid and yet to be paid. They’ll likely try to claw it back. He’ll contest the amounts paid and yet to be paid.

That’s what grievances before arbitrators are for.

I bet he’s on Kansas City by Tuesday, followed by a stream of ESPN pieces about how he’s turning his life around.
With Tony Dungy and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes waving Pom poms and eating BBQ.

I really don’t get what he’s up to by leaving in a dignified manner with thank your to Brady and Belichick. I mean, he called his last boss a cracker.

It’s a little spooky.

Yes, next time I hope they can use a crystal ball to foresee sexual assault allegations where there were none previously.

Pretty mad we traded DT.
Me too -- if they had just left him cut we wouldn't have to listen to this drivel.

This thread is full of stupid.

So what are the cap implications? Can we get big Trent?
Right now I think the cap implications are that next year and the following year they are charged for his guaranteed money, but they get relief on about $430,000 in per game roster bonuses -- 14/16 x $500,000.

I don't know what happens if they withhold payments. My guess is that the money still counts against the cap until any grievances are resolved.

Sad to say but he should have paid the $2M settlement. He cost himself a lot of money not doing so.

Ps that’s not an endorsement of what I'm sure he did....just a financial observation.

Well that was an insane couple of weeks. I’m not jumping up and down that’s he’s gone but I’m not that disappointed either. Just kind of “Welp.”

Hernandez was kind of crazy when he was on the team--putting aside the string of murders, he was apparently a very difficult teammate, he threatened to fuck up wes welker, etc--and they kept him for years and resigned him. Crazy takes you a long way.

Corey Dillon was crazy. Moss was crazy. Will McGinest was actually a little crazy--isn't there a story about him punching out some rookie offensive lineman and the team claimed the guy had a bee stain because his eye was swollen shut?

Messing with crazy is kind of a requirement when you're running an NFL team. In the words of Bill Parcells, football is not a game for the well adjusted.

They took a chance and when it became clear he wasn't going to get his act in line they ditched him. Seems smart to me.

This is where I am. I fully expected this move and am ok with it but from a football standpoint this is a loss. Watching AB shredding defenses with TB12 would have been really fun but, alas, wasn’t meant to be. I now find myself being incredibly interested in Josh Gordon’s recovery. N’Keal Harry is going to play an important role before it’s over.

Yeah I'm less concerned with whether the Patriots end up having to pay that money to him - Kraft can spare it and it'll be a matter of litigation for a while - than I am about whether we get relief under the salary cap, since that's what Belichick was really risking (well that and the opportunity cost of the time spent dealing with him).

Does anyone who knows more about salary cap relief than Albert Breer have an opinion on this? This isn't something Miguel would normally offer an opinion on, is it?

Neither Dillon nor Moss were anywhere near his level of crazy when they came aboard. They were depressed and they were desperate. “Tell me what to do coach ....”.

Meanwhile say goodbye to $9 million in cap space for this season unless and until the merits of what is due are adjudicated in the Patriots favor.
