Chris Mellen of Sox Prospects wrote in the March 9, 2012 Prospect Preview “Owens did not pitch after signing with the organization last season, but did appear in the Fall Instructional League. His stuff looked advanced enough to break camp with Greenville to begin this coming season. Owens has the feel for pitching and arsenal to be successful at this level in 2012. His curveball should prove to be an offering that fools hitters in A-Ball. The consistency of his fastball command will drive his overall results during game action. If Owens is spotting up on the corners and avoiding the middle of the plate, he should limit the amount of contact he gives up. His knowledge of how to pitch to his strengths will lead to a relatively quick assimilation against the level of competition. The physical toll of the professional season is where Owens is likely to experience the biggest adjustment. Given his need for strength, I expect him to wear down over the course of the season and have to fight through the mid-season wall. Owens is highly projectable and has the raw stuff to develop into a pitcher who is very nasty on batters as he progresses with his development. I see 2012 as a year of subtle steps towards reaching that potential.”

April 7 - Owens came in after 1 Inning Rehab appearances by Rich Hill in the first and Andrew Miller in the second against Lakewood. Owens pitched the 3[sup]rd[/sup], 4[sup]th[/sup] and 5[sup]th[/sup] before facing 5 men and allowing them all to reach to start the 6[sup]th[/sup] all 5 runners would score including 2 after he had turned the game over to Tyler Lockwood. In total he faced 16 batters and because Greenville had a 7-0 lead going into the inning he got the win when they hung on for an 11-6 win.

His final line was 3.0 IP 5 Runs all earned on 5 hits with 2 walks and 7 K’s. His only other two outs were 1 GO and 1 FO. 2 Lakewood runners had SB while he was on the mound with Blake Swihart catching.

April 12 - Owens got his first start of the season against West Virginia. He pitched 3 and 2/3rds giving up 1 in the second, 1 in the third and leaving the bases loaded when he left with two outs in the 4[sup]th[/sup]. 2 of the three runners inherited by Matty Ott scored. In total Owens faced 22 batters and took the loss as the Greenville offense wasn’t able to bail him out.

His final line was 3.2 IP 4 Runs all earned on 7 hits with 3 walks and 7 more K’s. His only two other outs were grounders. 2 of the hits left the yard as he surrendered homeruns to leadoff hitter SS Alen Hanson (leading off the game in the first) and then to CF Gregory Polanco in the 3[sup]rd[/sup]. Both HR were solo shots. Jordan Weems caught this game. No SB.

April 17 – Owens got his second start of the season against Lexington. He pitched 4 innings giving up 2 runs in the fourth before coming back out for the 5[sup]th[/sup] and allowing all three of his batters to reach (3[sup]rd[/sup] time’s a trend) and one to score before Matty Ott came on and allowed the other two to cross the plate (3[sup]rd[/sup] time again&hellip This time he left with a lead and it held up but because he only went 4 Ott got the eventual Greenville W. In total Owens faced 19 batters.

His final line was 4 IP 5 Runs all earned on 4 hits with 3 walks and 8 Ks. His other outs came via the grounder 2 including 1 DP(which I realize only adds up to 11 outs but I can’t for the life of me find the 12[sup]th[/sup].) He gave up his third HR of the season this to Zach Johnson the Lexington cleanup hitter with one on in the 4[sup]th[/sup]. Also Lexington had a SB off of him with Jordan Weems behind the plate his 3[sup]rd[/sup] of the season.

April 25 – Owens got his third start of the season against Delmarva. The game on April 22 against Augusta was rained out seemingly pushing him back. Looks like he pitched an inning in a downpour but I’ll have to keep checking to be sure. Owens pitched 3 and 2/3rds giving up 2 in the second and loading the bases in the 4[sup]th[/sup] but Yeiper Castillo bucked the trend and got the third out without giving up any inherited runners. Castillo got the win for his 3.1 IP in relief. Owens faced 18 batters.

Owens had a final line of 3.2 IP 2 Runs both earned on 5 hits with 3 BB and 7Ks. His other outs came via 1 grounder (a DP on it) a Fly out and a Pickoff at first. No HR but 2 SB for Delmarva off of Owens and Weems bringing his total for the season to 5.

April 30 – Owens best start of the season to date was his fourth start of the season and second against Lakewood. He pitched 4 complete innings and Yeiper Castillo came out for the 5[sup]th[/sup] going the rest of the way for the combined shutout. Yeiper of course got the win J. Owens faced 17 batters and threw his first Wild Pitch of the season.

Owens had a final line of 4 IP 0 R on 1 hit with 3 BB and 7 K’s. The remaining 5 outs were split 4 grounders and 1 fly out. Again no HR and this time no SB with Jordan Weems catching.

May 6 – Owens gets his fifth start of the season against Rome and his first on his home field since April 7. He pitched 5 complete with Tyler Wilson coming in to start the 6[sup]th[/sup]. The bullpen wasn’t great but they didn’t need to be as Greenville piled up 11 runs giving Owens the win and moving him to 2 and 1 on the season. He faced 20 batters and was helped out a by a double play ball. Owens had a final line of 5 IP 0 R on 2 hits with 4 BB and 3 K’s. The remaining 12 outs were split between 4 grounders, one a DP, and 7 fly outs. Again no HR but one SB with Blake Swihart catching.

He pitched 6 shutout innings with Tyler Wilson coming in for the 7[sup]th[/sup]and 8[sup]th[/sup] and Tyler Lockwood closing it out for the 2-1 victory. Owens got the win and moved to 3 and 1. He faced 22 batters including a strike ‘em out thrown ‘em out double play to end the 3[sup]rd[/sup] and striking out the side in the 5[sup]th[/sup].

Owens line for the day was 6 IP 0 R on 2 hits with 3 BB and a season high 8 K’s. The remaining 10 outs were 3 grounders, 6 fly balls or liners and the one 1 Caught Stealing. No HR but he did surrender his 4[sup]th[/sup] SB with Blake Swihart behind the plate.

Owens moved to 4 and 1 with the victory. He faced 24 batters in the game including two that advanced via error in the 5[sup]th[/sup] inning leading to his first two unearned runs of the season.

Owens line for the day was 5 IP 4 R 2 ER on 7 hits with 1 BB and 5 K’s. The remaining 10 outs were 3 grounders and 7 fly outs or pop outs. He surrendered neither HR nor SB with Jordan Weems catching him.

May 23 – Owens with his eighth start of the season at Asheville. He only pitched 4 innings and generally got hammered getting the loss and moving to 4 and 2 on the season. He faced 20 batters 9 of them in the 4[sup]th[/sup] when he gave up all 7 hits and all 6 runs. The inning included a throwing error, his second wild pitch and a pick off. Of the hits only the first was for extra bases (a double) and 5 of the 7 were either grounders or a bunt that found holes so he wasn’t getting as smacked around as the final line might indicate.

Ownes line for the day was 4 IP 6 R 6 ER on 7 hits with 2 BB and 4K’s. The remaining 8 outs were 3 grounders, 4 fly outs and a pick off. He surrendered neither HR nor SB but had 2 WP with Blake Swihart catching.

Left-hander Henry Owens, at 19 years old, is the first high school pitcher drafted by the Sox since Casey Kelly to go straight to a full-season affiliate in his first pro season. And the 2011 supplemental first-rounder continued to show that he belongs on Wednesday, as he continued to marry high strikeout totals with ever-improving control to continue to show significant promise.

Owens has a 4.72 ERA for Single-A Greenville, something that makes it easy to overlook his prospect status. But a strong case can be made that, of all the pitchers in the Red Sox system, he and Barnes might merit the loftiest prospect status, a case he continued to build on Wednesday.

He allowed just one unearned run in five innings while allowing four hits (three singles, a double) in five innings of work. The 6-foot-7 lefty struck out five (the 14th time in 15 outings that he has punched out at least one batter per inning) and walked one, continuing to show improvement in his control.

In his last eight starts, Owens has struck out 50 and walked eight in 39 1/3 innings. While his 4.72 ERA on the year isn’t eye-popping, he’s worked to a 3.29 mark in his last 11 starts dating to April 30. He’s showing a solid three-pitch mix (typically working at 91-92 mph with his fastball, he’s topped out at 94 mph and, in one outing, hit 95; swing-and-miss changeup; a curveball that he spins well and throws at two different speeds, even if its location is inconsistent) and an advanced feel for pitching, resulting in a rate of 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings this year, the highest K/9 rate of any pitcher in the minors who has thrown at least 50 innings.

“He certainly has a ton of upside,” said Matt Barnes, who pitched with Owens at the start of the year in Greenville. “He’s got three good pitches that he throws, and with his strikeout rates, I think there’s a lot of potential.”

FORT MYERS, Fla. — For a day, at least, Jackie Bradley Jr. did not generate the biggest bit of prospect buzz in the Red Sox organization. On Sunday, even though the 22-year-old outfielder hit a homer against left-hander Cliff Lee as part of a four RBI day, he took a backseat to another performance that was the most outrageous of the spring by anyone in the organization.
Here are a few breathless depictions by talent evaluators of the outing by left-hander Henry Owens in an intrasquad game:
 
“Like a videogame.”
“Silly.”
“Stupid.”
“Toying with the hitters.”
“Stuff that would have played at any level.”
“Never seen anything like it at the professional level.”
 
So, what got the hype machine buzzing? Owens, facing Red Sox hitters who are expected to open the year in Single-A, faced 15 batters. What happened?
One groundball.
 
One flare to right for a single (“He had him struck out, but the ump missed a two-strike pitch,” said one observer)
 
No walks
 
Thirteen strikeouts
 
Or, more accurately: THIRTEEN! STRIKEOUTS!

Owens, who added roughly 14 pounds of muscle this offseason and now — after signing at 181 pounds — is at approximately 205, threw his fastball at 92-93 mph, mixing in some 94s and even, for the first time in his career, touching 95 mph once. (Scouting grade on the 20-80 scale: a 60, though it played as more of a 70.)
 
“I’d get ahead with my fastball and they’d foul off my two-seamer,” said Owens. “That was the hardest I’ve ever thrown consistently. My velocity has been going up this March. It’s good to see the offseason workouts paying off.”
 
He showed a sharp curveball. (Scouting grade: 50.) And, he showed an outrageous changeup that one observer characterized (perhaps thanks in part to a wall of wind) as being akin to a Wiffle ball. (Scouting grade: 70.)
 
In his outing, the 6-foot-7 southpaw had 27 swings and misses — with the breakdown being something like 17 on fastballs, three on curves and seven on changeups. The sight of all three of Owens’ offerings working at such a high level — particularly on a day when he didn’t walk anyone — is the sort of stuff that suggests top-of-the-rotation potential.

I was just about to mention this.  He has some of the longest arms and legs that I have ever seen.  With such a high leg kick, that delivery has to look pretty baffling to hitters.  Gotta be tough to maintain his release point though.  I wonder if they will work to minimize that leg kick a little, since it doesn't look from the last picture like he is taking a huge stride.

Well, he tucks the ears during the wind-up so his wing span is reduced. I wonder if it is a tactic that adds to his deception, to flare out those "wings" like the spitting lava lizard of cape biancha is definitely something that can't be taught.

April 6 – Owens with his first start of the season for Salem at Frederick.  He pitched extremely well over 5 innings of work but got a no-decision as the offense failed to fire and the bullpen couldn’t hold a 2 run lead.  Owens faced 18 batters picking off his first man of the season in the first inning. 
 
Owens line for the day was 5 IP 0R 0ER on 2 hits with 2 BB and 4Ks.  Of the remaining 11 outs 7 were grounders and 3 were in the air but two were infield pops and the pickoff.  Both hits were classified by gameday as “soft” one on a grounder and one on a flyball. He surrendered no extra base hits and one stolen base with Carson Blair catching.

Now scouts say he’s taken a leap forward and the results for high Class A Salem reflect that: In 21 innings, the 20-year-old has a 1.71 ERA, 22 strikeouts and six walks.

In what is starting to become an early theme Owens pitched well over five innings but got a no decision.  The offense came but it was late (5 in the bottom of the 8th to break a 2-2 tie.)   Owens faced 21 batters in the game.
 
Owens line for the day was 5 IP 2R 2ER on 4 hits (1 was a two run homer in the 4th) with 1 BB and 5 Ks.  Of the remaining 10 outs 4 were grounders and 6 were in the air but two were infield pops.  All 4 of the hits were listed as flyballs and all were for extra bases 2 doubles a triple and the home run. Henry also hit his first batter of the season and had his walk in his last inning of work and allowed no stolen bases with Blake Swihart catching.

Owens surrendered an early lead for the second straight game (both 1-0 leads taken into the 4th inning) and took the loss in a game where the offense again did him no favors only scoring 2 runs the entire game.  Owens faced 22 batters in his five innings including having to work around two men that reached via error.
 
Owens line for the day was 5 IP 3R 2ER on 3 hits with 2 BB and 7 Ks.  Of the remaining 8 outs 3 were grounders and 5 were in the air with one line out and one infield popup.  Two of the 3 hits were listed as line drives, both singles, and the double was listed as a fly ball. Henry also had his first wild pitch of the season and allowed 2 SB with Leonel Escobar catching.

April 23 – Owens with his fourth start of the season at home vs. Wilmington and he picked up his first win of the season.  Salem jumped out early with 2 in the first and 6 more in the second and Owens cruised through 6 scoreless innings.  Owens faced 22 batters in his six innings and benefitted by Blake Swihart picking off a runner.
 
Owens line for the day was 6 IP 0 R 0ER on 3 hits with 1 BB and 6 Ks.  Of the remaining 12 outs 6 were on grounders and 5 were in the air to the outfield with one being the pickoff.  Two of the 3 hits were listed as ground balls, with one fly ball. All of the hits were singles.  Henry also hit his second batter of the season and allowed a SB with Blake Swihart catching.

April 29 – Owens with his fifth start of the season after getting rained out on the 28th at Wilmington and he beat the Blue Rocks for the second straight start.  Salem again took an early lead (the 4th time in 5 starts for Owens) and he again gave up the 1-0 lead before the O came up with 4 more.  Owens handed the bullpen a 5-2 lead and they hung on to get him the victory 5-4.  Owens faced 20 batters in his five innings of work and struck out the side swinging 1-2-3 in the third.
 
Owens line for the day was 5 IP 2 R 2 ER on 3 hits with 2BB and 8 K’s.  Of the remaining 7 outs 4 were on grounders and 3 were in the air with one an infield pop.  The three hits broke down as 1 ground single, 1 line single and 1 fly ball double.  Henry, pitching to Blake Swihart for the 3rd time in 5 starts also allowed a SB and Blake had a passed ball.

May 4 – Owens with his sixth start of the season at Winston Salem and he picked up his third win.  Salem jumped out with 4 runs in the first two innings, Owens gave two back in the bottom of the second but was clean the rest of the way while the offense added 3 more in the sixth and won going away 9-4.  Owens faced 22 batters in 6 innings of work and for the second game in a row struck out the side swinging 1-2-3 in the third.

Owens line for the day was 6 IP 2 R 2 ER on 2 hits with 3 BB and 10K’s.  Of the remaining 8 outs 2 were on the ground and 4 in the air with one being a line drive, the remaining two outs came on a pickoff for Owens his second of the season and a Caught Stealing by Blake Swihart on the backend of a strike-em out throw-em out double play.  The two hits were the two run homer and a line drive single both in the bottom of the second inning.  Henry again pitched to Blake Swihart and allowed no stolen bases.

I just realized that my Groundout Flyout Numbers don't match TGG's ratio above.  Is that because I am including anything hit in the air that is caught as a fly out  (including line drives and infield popups?)  I notice that on a regular basis that the numbers listed in the box score don't match my numbers from the log/gameday.  Anyway I started doing it that way so I'm going to continue.
