I upgraded my Netflix plan to the one that does 4K/Dolby Vision/Atmos. And I've since downgraded. The LG TV app has random sound drop-outs every few minutes for a few seconds, and the Xbox One app has weird artifacting in the Atmos output. Other apps (Disney+ on both platforms) work perfectly, so seems to be a Netflix thing from what I can find. I'd rather have a stable stream.

The HDR mode is pretty killer on games. Have played some Borderlands 3 and Forza Motorsport 7 with it on.
If Netflix didn't purposefully cripple its regular service in order to create a separate premium 4k/HDR/Atmos service level I doubt there would be any of these problems.

Interesting. I wonder if your internet isn't fast enough to support consistent streaming at the higher quality.

I'm pulling 300+ pretty consistently, so that shouldn't be a concern. No latency concerns to any test sites I've been able to see, and the video parts are fine just the audio gets weird. Both app issues have been out there for a couple of years from what I've searched. Switched the xbox to 7.1 uncompressed output in the meantime to get around this until they downgrade my plan.

So circling back on this thread, I gave the LG CX a shot.

Immediate improvement on Netflix and the Xbox. The screen is bright and glorious. There should be a class action lawsuit against Samsung QLED, due to the fact that their TVs do not render HDR from Netflix or Xbox correctly. I spent hours trying to configure my Samsung TV. Nothing worked. I spent 20 seconds on the LG TV, to plug in the HDMI cords, and it looked incredible out of the gate. It looks significantly better on Netflix and Xbox but it also looks better with just a cable box, too.

I'll be rolling with LG going forward.

Samsung has completely fallen out of favor for me in every aspect. I absolutely can't stand their whole app ecosystem. Just a crappier version of everything else that's out there for free (mainly referring to phones and their smart watch). LG makes the best TVs right now from like any angle.

HDR is still a pain in the ass, though. I love it. It looks absolutely amazing with almost everything that works right, but Windows 10 is super annoyingly inconsistent with it. It's so frustrating trying to fix anything when everything is automatic.

Yes, the LG doesn't make it perfect, sometimes I have to turn the TV on and off to catch the HDR.(at least you know when it's not working, as it's a blank screen) But at least it works, right out of the gate, on plug in. No settings needed to be changed. I can't even describe how many things I tried with the Samsung, on multiple TVs. Hours of rage. :)

There are legions of complaints on the internet about HDR, particularly with Samsung. It is the opposite of great, it fucking sucks. Yes, it's amazing when it works, but it's too glitchy and I assume there are millions who have a washed out picture and just go with it because there isn't any other option.

But Netflix and Samsung SHOULD allow people to turn off HDR if they want. Neither does and that puts some people(me) in a bind. The Xbox does allow it, at least.

I'm done with Samsung, (although I'll be using them for years because I have over 15 Samsung TVs currently) Going forward, I am living the LG life now. Red Dead Redemption 2 looks ridiculous on the CX.

Maybe jm is running a small motel?
If it helps explain, I have two homes and I like having multiple screens in rooms that I use.(TV/living room, game room, office, gym, etc)

Yes, I have a problematic TV habit but it's great for watching sports and news and TV and movies. But I was using the wrong drug. LG is my new DOC.

Congrats. You chose wisely to really like something that is almost constantly being improved yet having its prevailing price markedly falling at the same time

Okay this is weird. I'm using my new LG CX. I load up Disney+ on Roku. I turn on Endgame. The TV announces I'm now in HDR mode! Yay! But apparently I have to redo my settings because I've only calibrated for SDR. Fine. But as I'm about to do that, the image goes out and the No Signal message comes up. Then the image comes back and pops back into HDR. Then it's gone again. Repeat, about once every two seconds. Poor Hawkeye.

I Googled, but can't find anything. Well shit. But then on a whim I put on Infinity War and it's fine.

So is that just a random issue with Disney+? I can't Google up anything specific about Endgame either.

The title of the thread is accurate. HDR sucks. It is too unreliable right now and the worst part is when it doesn't work, it breaks everything.(I alluded to how my screen is just dark when the TV tries to switch to HDR but the switch doesn't work)

Imagine you're a 80 year old person just trying to watch TV and you have to deal with this? It's completely unacceptable.

I didn’t like the app availability in the LG store so I threw a 4K Fire TV stick at it. I have never had any issue with HDR compatibility whatsoever. It just works as expected every time.

On my Sony (which has the LG panel but its own processor) I've been running everything through the Apple TV 4k and Fire Cube gen 2, and HDR has been flawless. Previously both devices forced HDR on everything even if the program wasn't encoded as such, but now they give you the option to have it switched on automatically for HDR content, and then off when going back to standard.

Just use the native app. I've never had this issue on my cx.

This happened to me recently with a Roku 4K Ultra and Twilight Zone in CBS All Access. The auto-adjust display refresh rate feature on the Roku is very flaky. It can sometimes trigger a rapid succession of modeset changes to trigger the refresh rate. It's not an HDR specific feature, but has that symptom when doing the modesets for HDR as well. It was incredibly buggy when they introduced it a few years ago to the point where it killed my old Panasonic LED due to overheating on the rapid succession of modesets. It seems to have broken again recently with a Roku update.

Follow these instructions to turn off "Auto-adjust display refresh rate". That fixed it for me with Twilight Zone.

I've been using the LG built-in apps for everything but the occasional disc or HBO Max (still no LG app).

From what I've seen on AVS Forum, the Apple TV 4k has problems with Dolby Vision content (not sure about HDR10), where it sends non-zero values for black. It's most visible in any letterboxing bars.

Yes I saw this about a year ago when I was watching The Town on my CX in the Apple TV app, switched to my Apple TV box and it wasn't there and haven't used the app since. I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed yet.

I have had HDR issues very occasionally with PS4/PS5 where the color is way off, reds are orange for example, but rebooting the console usually clears it up and I've had it happen on another display so I don't blame the CX for that.
