Hayward to Boston...Really, We Mean It

Are the last few hours really that big of a deal? Or are we just upset because an afternoon of indecision or delay in the Twitter age seems like an eternity?

I'm just trying to figure out why so many posters are assuming the worst here.
If the "scoop" had been about Hayward staying in Utah, and then this clusterhump had taken place, the feeling among Boston fans would have been the exact opposite of what's going on now

ESPN sucks.

If Hayward stays, I don't begrudge him this. He has no control over the "sources" reporting this.
No matter what he decides, this. People should also stop trying to read the tea leaves. We really know nothing more than we knew last night. We are all playing the same waiting game. I don't see any reason to think today indicates anything other than that Hayward is having a hard time making up his mind. That could be because he isn't convinced he wants to leave Utah. It could also be because he knows he does but is still talking himself into it because he really likes Utah. The fact that it is a hard decision doesn't lean toward staying or going, it just confirms what we knew from the beginning, that this is a close call either way.

Don't know if this was mentioned, but the one scenario that I "liked" was that Haynes source was Pat Riley. Which is why they ran with it. And Riley flat out lied to him, perhaps hoping that it would blow up and that he would go back to Utah.
Normally this would seem implausible, but I think this is possible.

ESPN Headline:
Sources: Hayward to Celts; Agent: No call yet

This is really hedging their bets. "WELL, out sources said it but CLEARLY we said that it hasn't been confirmed!"

Typically the headline is "(Player X) picks (team)" So...they are dialing it back. What was their headline earlier today?

We're not waiting for a signing. That can't happen for two more days anyway. We aren't waiting for the Celtics to clear cap space. They won't do that unless Hayward declares his intent to sign in Boston. What we are waiting for is Hayward to declare where he intends to sign. Literally nothing needs to happen for him to do this. He probably should, and will, contact the teams involved personally first, but that takes a total of a few minutes to accomplish.

In short, this isn't a paperwork delay or a making it official delay. The two possibilities are Hayward hasn't decided yet or he did, lost control of the story break, and is trying to hit reset to get control back.
I get we aren't waiting for league approval and they couldn't give it even if they wanted to, which wasn't clear in my post. I still would have thought the Cs, again assuming they heard from GH directly, have potentially let impacted players know before they heard it on the twitter.

Absent any info I don't think its the Cs by they way, and am more inclined to look at the Heat or HaywouldyouJustGetOnWithIt's side, new to the spotlight with the first time all-star in a small market. Maybe the first call to the principals was Reilly and GH never got to the Jazz before it was out and he gets the call direct from the owner?

The longer this goes, the more likely this is the case (or he had never really decided). Love the Riley theory...definitely plausible.
Again--others said "league sources" and "sources close to Hayward". I really doubt they all pointed back to Pat Riley.

He's not a bogeyman.

What if the "others" are all just lying a-holes trying to look plugged in?
I would say... because they are all long-time NBA writers with their own sources, and the odds that all of them didn't bother to send out a quick check with some of those sources before making up a confirmation is pretty slim? If anything being the 8th guy to confirm something is worth a lot less than being the first person to say "well actually might not be done".

Apparently the twitter account of the agency repping Hayward followed the Celtics today.

I feel bad for Hayward. This is obviously a very hard decision and all he wants to do is take his time and deal with it in the best possible way but the wolves are on the prowl on social media desperately searching for any hint of an answer. I know a lot of people love the wacky social media aspect of NBA free agency but to me it comes off as mostly irritating.

I feel worse for guys like Olynyk and Jerebko whose futures depend on what Hayward decides to do, and whose options dwindle with each day that Hayward can't make up his mind.

Woj: Boston's Plan B was Griffin and Galinari. With them out and if Hayward passes, tons of cap space is available and assets remain.

So a note for those who saw Bosh timing as Hayward related.....
They had to cut him when they did in order for him to clear waivers as/before the moritorium ends. If they hadn't cut him then they would go into FA unable to sign deals with any FA (not just Hayward).
