Hanley Off-Field Stuff?

So I was listening to felger and mazz today, and they kept alluding to some off-field rumors about hanley ramirez. They kept saying "something happened" off-field which is why he got released. Before everyone goes and says don't listen to F&M, other people have sorta alluded to it as well. Ian Browne has mentioned that it's "interesting" no one has signed him yet in a tweet on Sunday. Carrabis has alluded to some rumors on his podcast.

It does seem weird that no one has picked him up though. It's been 12 days since his release and there isn't even any news about someone being interested in him. All teams can get him on a minimum contract and that vesting option doesn't kick in anymore too. There was some hints that maybe other teams know about the off-field stuff and that's why they are staying away from him. Does anyone know anything about this? I feel like a lot of the media are holding back on reporting something yet, but I feel something is going to come out eventually.

Some people said he was hurt and trying to play through it. Other than that nothing. I know we all love him but he hasn’t been good in years. Brad miller is at least as good an option and he just got DFAed by the rays m(traded to the twins too). His skill set is not valuable, he is a big name and will want ABs, and there is limited upside to signing him. He’s a replacement level player

The wrong side of the bridge....

Two years, to be exact. Don't get me wrong, I think his upside going forward is minimal and I'm not sorry we DFA'd him....but he was a really good hitter and valuable overall contributor a pretty short time ago. Let's not go all revisionist here.

It could be Hanley is just enjoying the down time at full pay. The only teams that would sign him would likely be awful teams looking for a trade chip should he hit well with them. There should be half a dozen teams interested in a possible trade chip. However, whats in it for Hanley?. Even a decent second half wont get him a big contract next year. His days of making 8 figure salaries after this year are over based on how the market played out this year, no matter how the rest of the year turns out.

Why bother playing again this year for no extra money? Maybe consider an incentive laden contract next year or just retire.

No ... it's because of some off-field stuff ... Felger & Mazz said so
It was mentioned on the Sox broadcast the other day as well...that it was "interesting" that he hadn't signed and had gone home to the Dominican Republic and some Sox folks said that they think he might have decided that he's done.

That's a lot different that saying there are "off-field issues"

Are you counting his month of April when you refer to "a short time ago?" I hope not because imo that's completely irrelevant. Heck anyone then can count a week and say "just a short time ago . . ."I agree if you want to refer to 2016 as "a short time ago."

Hanley's WAR numbers with the Sox are listed below:

https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8001&position=SS

2015 -1.3
2016 3
2017 -.4
2018 -.1

That's not good. It's bad. Let's not revise history by not counting the entire picture.

If off-field encompasses the clubhouse, I did see a report about Cora and Hanley having a heated convo about whether Ramirez had been fully up-front with his health status to the medical staff - could that be what they were referencing? Sorry no link

It did sound kind of weird when he said it, like they were hinting at something. But obviously that is speculation.

I agree 100%, and say, yeah, why play at all? The market is shifting against players like him; he's unlikely to find a deal that (even at max.) offers him more than $1m plus incentives; and oh, he's made nearly $160m in his career. I don't know how Hanley spends his money, but I have to think there's a huge chunk left - enough to live very nicely.

Plus, Hanley has good will in general with the Sox fanbase - he's a player you could see showing up at the Alumni Game. He wrote an essay about his love for the Sox, stating, "My only dream was to get to the big leagues and play for Boston. That was it. Nothing else mattered." Why bother unless you're truly hungry?

Most definitely. But, and I'll admit I could be reading more into it, but it seemed by the tone of the discussion that it wasn't just "interesting" that he had gone home and not signed on, but that it was *interesting* if you follow me.

Seems like an okay dude, so I hope it's simply that he's burned out on it.

This is what I’m talking about. Can you expand what you heard? What do you mean “friend of a friend thing”?
First, why don't you tell us who you are? No one drops in as a lurker, drops a new thread in their first post trying to see if a fanbase has any inside details.

So, come clean. Are you a member of the media, or employed by a member of the media? Do you have a vested interest in Hanley, or finding out info on him?

Why don't you be upfront about your intentions here, and then members can decide how to answer you?

Thanks. I was trying to figure out how to put this basic question up to the poster, as well.

What do you want to know about me? I’m a fan. I’m pretty sure I’ve had an account here like five years ago but just made a new one. I’m honesty just so curious to find out what the rumors are that Carrabis/F&M/Ian Browne are alluding to. I know some media members know about all of the rumors, but no one will report it yet. I don’t even know if the exact rumors myself, but I think they relate around his Miami house.

I have zero vested interest in Hanley. I do have one question though - do other teams know why Hanley got released (if there was an off field incident) and that’s why he still is unsigned?

He literally said "two years, to be exact." So yes, 2016.

Perhaps he has decided that platooning with Moreland (who might be better off playing 5 days per week than every day) wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Don't know what your game is here, but most of us are through playing
Listen, the release didn’t pass the smell test. I think Something happened.

I’m a literally YOU. I’m a Sox fan. I have no agenda. I’m just trying to piece this shit together and I came here cuz I knows it’s a red Sox forum with a lot of people well connected to what’s going on with the team. If no one has anything and nothing comes out then this will just go away

Dude, I'm going to give you a week off which should give you plenty of time to read the lengthy recent Hanley thread, which should answer any questions you have if you actually have them.

Also I guess I will lock this, I think it's a possibly valid topic if there is anything real to it, but that can go in the other Hanley thread, if anything exists.
