Sad to see anyone die but aside from bursting onto the scene when George died, we never really knew much about Hank or heard from him. Well wishes with the Steinbrenners.

Has it been? Or are you kidding?

What is the story with Hank stepping back as Hal stepped up? Was there a battle for control? I must confess as a Red Sox fan, I was elated when it appeared Hank was going to take over ... he seemed like he had all of his father's swagger and none of his business acumen. Instead, Hal ended up doing a pretty good job, giving Cashman control, rebuilding the farm and putting an end to that dumb Tampa/NY divide that seemed to keep the team perpetually in turmoil.

I think the public version is that Hank wanted to focus on futbol and horses while Hal wanted to run the Yankees. Could be more dramatic than that but doubt we'd ever know.

The way I remember it is that Hank pushed all of his chips in on insisting NY bring back A-Rod when he opted out, against Cashman's wishes. When that deal got ugly quick, Hank was out for good and Hal was the man. I am too busy to fact check that, sorry, but that's what I remember.

Hank gave us more of A-Rod. That’s a complicated legacy.

As for what Yankee fans have lost, the closest parallel for me is 1994 when the strike stopped pennant races in August. That was hard. Nothing got started this year and the injuries did not bode well. Nothing ventured, nothing lost. What’s the sum total of nothing? Where is Coup when we need him?

Does this give Hal a majority ownership stake now? I’m assuming the 66% owned by the family was divided between the three kids.
I wouldn't necessarily assume that. Depending on how their agreement is structured there could be a call option in favor of the two siblings to buy from Hank's estate or it could simply pass to Hank's children. My guess is that the option exists but that's not going to be cheap.

The Boss sired four children. Three survive as general partners in the baseball end.

From the NY Post:

Steinbrenner was the oldest son of George and Joan Steinbrenner. Hal Steinbrenner is the Yankees’ managing general partner and co-chairperson. Sisters Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal and Jessica Steinbrenner are general partners and vice chairpersons.

Unfortunately, that’s something that I‘ll always remember him for. But condolences to the Steinbrenner family.
