A thief smashed into baseball legend Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez’s rental car Sunday night in San Francisco, making off with an estimated half-million dollars worth of jewelry and electronics, sources familiar with the investigation told The Chronicle.

Rodriguez was in town broadcasting the Giants and Philadelphia Phillies game for ESPN and he left his car on the 400 block of Brannan Street, about three blocks from Oracle Park, sources said.

Sometime between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., someone broke into a car in that location and stole a camera, a laptop, miscellaneous jewelry and a bag, said Officer Adam Lobsinger, a San Francisco police spokesman. Lobsinger said the burglary involved a private citizen and it’s against department policy to release victim information.

But numerous sources told The Chronicle the victim was Rodriguez and the thieves pilfered roughly $500,000 worth of goods. The department has made the report confidential, meaning it cannot be accessed by members of the force who are not involved in the investigation.

Rental car smash-and-grabber is like the third-leading non-tech job category in San Francisco.

If the guy wasn't already a $400 millionaire or whatever this almost sounds like a sort of insurance scam kind of thing. Where he tells accomplices that jewelry will be in the car.

I guess the more innocent explanation is that it wasn't a bunch of bling but like maybe just a present for JLo or whatever that he left in the car and the theif just got really lucky. He's got the kind of money that if it's her birthday and he's out of town he maybe just went shopping and picked up a necklace or whatever before the game.

It would make a little more sense if J-Lo was with him. But my guess is that she wouldn't be on a short San Francisco road trip.

So that means A-Roid travels with roughly $400,000 worth of jewelry. I bet he puts it all on back at the hotel and kisses mirrors.

I mean, 400k in jewelry could be a Richard Mille, a necklace and a ring. It’s not like a duffel bag worth of stuff.

I believe I mentioned this in TBLTS San Francisco vacation thread, don't leave shit in your car. From the article:

In 2017, the city had its worst year ever for the crimes with 31,000 reported auto burglaries. That number has slowly started dropping as San Francisco police have reorganized staffing and placed more officers on foot patrols.

The number of reported auto burglaries each day, though, remains stark. There were 11,269 reports of car break-ins in San Francisco for the first half of the year — or 62 a day, according to department statistics. That number is down about 11% from the same period last year.

Especially down where ARod parked. Its a gentrified area that is home to a lot of newer tech companies. The cities main convention center is nearby too as well as newer bars & restaurants that attract a lot of visitors. Thieves have been trained that cars down there will often have luggage, laptops, tablets etc.

I know some people who park down there and leave their windows down to avoid having to pay for new auto galss (they have tried notes saying "no valuables in the car" but apparently that isn't an effective deterrent).

Btw, its surprising to me that (a) ARod drives himself around places when he broadcasts (b) that when he does, he parks on the street and not in a high end lot and (c) he doesn't just leave his stuff somewhere or bring it into the park.

What's even more whack is there's a lot ON THAT BLOCK. I know it's there because there's a bar in that block that my friend likes to go to before games, so I've walked by the lot on the way to the park.

The same kind of idiot who would have $500K worth of jewelry and electronics with him on a business road trip. Unless he had all of ESPN's broadcast equipment in the back seat of his rental, what could he possibly have needed that much jewelry and electronics for in San Francisco?
That's a lot of jewelry/mirrors

It could also be an insurance scam or convenience rather than premeditated conspiracy. Like A-rod’s car was legitimately robbed but he really only had $10,000 worth of valuables in it.

which is why homeowners insurance policies (Which would respond here) have an explicit and separate liability limit for jewelry, cash, and similar (e.g. silverware). You want more than that offers, you have to have a scheduled articles policy that lists and describes the items, validates the value via appraisals every so often, and where your insurance premium for them then scales up to the value being insured.

That'd be quite some premeditation, unless he'd gone out of his way to schedule a bunch of articles, plans to fence them afterwards, and hired guys to "break into" his car. Seems like you end up like Jussie Smollett more often than not, so unless Arod's career earnings have already gone up his nose, that seems a pretty remote possibility.

Way back in the mid-1980’s, before car alarms were ubiquitous, you’d see BMW’s parked on the street in Boston with a sign in the window: NO RADIO IN CAR.

A guy I know swore he saw one with a broken window and a note added to the sign: Buy one, asshole!

I bet that is true on both accounts.

I find it harder to believe he found a parking space to begin with.
I understand you’re embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by your failure to find a parking spot. But, unlike A-Rod, you chose not to go the extra mile for one.

I know Frisco is a progressive city, but can't they find a more productive use of training dollars than this?

A guy I know said he saw a car with the window smashed, the NO RADIO sign with the response: Just Checking!
