Roy Hodgson delivers instant results with a clean sheet. Sounds like Ranieri's pizza party incentive was never enough for the Watford players.

Is there some way that Watford can get relegated except for Roy?

Why does Union Berlin turn in a stinker every time they play Augsburg?

USMNT news I caught from watching that disaster…Pepi did not even make the bench for Augsburg today due to a broken bone in his nose. Didn’t see that in the other thread, but doesn’t sound like a big deal either.

He played most of the game after it happened, so it was not a highlight in the broadcast once the blood was stopped and wasn’t even known that it was a break until after the game.

Must have been truly awful to play with that injury in those conditions.

I was excited to watch the game yesterday - but was doing a replay since it started so late here. Thought it was on Paramount+, then went to ESPN+, which cheerfully showed me the score and 1:32 of highlights before I figured out it was on FS1. I didn’t bother watching the game at that point. So (and I know you’re not complaining) sorry if I was covering old ground. I hadn’t heard about the injury and was looking forward to seeing a glimpse of him today. Would have been better at least if he had scored against Union.

Interesting graphic here that tells a basic story about tiers of clubs.

The true elite, most exemplified by City but to a slightly lesser extent Liverpool and Chelsea, can regularly access central spaces in front of the opponent's box and can counter-press effectively enough that their opponents struggle to access any spaces in the attacking half, including on the wings.

The wannabees (Arsenal, Spurs, United) can dominate in the middle of the field but tend to morph into the Horseshoe of Crap as they move into the attacking third, everything gets funneled wide and they struggle to access central spaces. Meanwhile, they don't counterpress effectively enough to prevent opponents from regularly accessing spaces on their own wings.

Midtable possession sides (Brighton, Leeds, Palace) are pretty similar to the wannabees, but can't quite dominate the middle of the field either.

Most stark thing to me on that graphic was Leicester. They've been total shit this season by the eye test and that graphic bears that out I think.

West Ham's chart is interesting, weakness in the opponent's box from Cresswell's side of the pitch (of course he's been out for a number of matches)

edit: oops, that is the right side, so Coufal/Fredericks side

When your opponents have more touches in a part of your 18 yard box than you do...it can't be good.
And your only attacking zones come from corners?

it’s going to be a loooong grind at Turf Moor. They have so many matches to make up, but are somehow only 3 points from safety. Weghorst better get bedded in quickly.

Everton v Newcastle was a great watch for first 10 minutes. Settled into a more boring period but both teams really up for it.

I havent had an opportunity to see much of Gordon this year but man is he an electric player. Just feels like something is about to happen whenever Wverton get the ball to his feet

Leeds also presents a fascinating case.

So … if that’s a foul on McGuire … AND it’s a yellow card … why isn’t it a red? McGuire was the last defender.
How can this possibly not be a red card for denial of a goal scoring opportunity? There is no other defender even remotely close.

PL refereeing is just astoundingly bad.

It wasn't an obvious goal scoring opportunity. There was no guarantee Rodriguez was going to play the ball correctly to get 1v1. Yellow was correct.

The 718
was DCL that dinged up that he couldn't make a 30 minute cameo?
Gray (Alli) and Mina (brathwaite) both came off with injuries in the first 30’.

we were getting slaughtered in midfield so VdB was the third sub, for Gomes, who was MOTM on Saturday in the Brentford cup tie but did not have the physicality to cope today. We got battered. ASM Trippier Lascellees Shelvey just banged us around.

Frank has no illusions now, this team needs some cojones.

but yes, Gordon is a hell of a player. He and Gray have been our best.

Spurs with the exact same XI from Saturday's FA Cup win over Brighton.

Lloris with a massive save early (I'm a few minutes behind, but expect I'll catch up before half)

I thought the Palace game started at 9pm here. I turn it on and its 23 minutes in (at 9:09 WTF) and Norwich scored 0:39 into the game. Maybe I should go back to watching luge. Did these games start at 15 minutes before the hour for some reason?!?

Between Borja and Forster, Southampton have some ugly mf'ers on their team.

Reggie got stoned on a beautiful move putting him 1v1 vs. the keeper.

Spurs then score on a clever Son finish at the near post assisted by Hoj.

Lloris with another excellent save.

Fun match so far, both teams getting after it. Southampton look strong in attack, but struggling to defend Spurs' weaker right wing.

Spurs defense was awful in that half. Davison Sanchez does some things well, but he's painfully unskilled and it felt like a lot of the game was Sanchez with the ball having to make a pass out of pressure and flubbing it.

Really surprised Spurs are setting up so low out of possession. I'm sure some of the thinking is that will open up space for counters, but it seems to be inviting too much pressure. Son and Lucas switched flanks late in the half, and I think that will result in a lot of danger.

Emerson's been very weak today. Sad because I really like him and I think he's been unfairly maligned, but not his best game so far. Credit as well to Southampton, they look organized and dangerous.

And now a penalty!

Edit: ugh, that was the worst penalty I've ever seen. I'm not going to post it, because I love Wilf, but Jesus fuck that was godawful.

Nice touches from Dav and Winks to get the ball to Kane, who plays a nice ball down the line for Lucas, who crosses to Son for the nice finish. Some controversy over the Emerson header to start the move--not sure how much of a foul there was.
