Just hoping he's back for 2014 at some point. Think its hard for the Pats to win it all without Gronk the way this team is built

I know that it's legal and in today's NFL you can't really say that it was dirty but it sure looked like he targeted Gronk's knee. I know there's not much you can do about it but it feels wrong that a defensive back can do that.

Until and unless they outlaw tucking your shoulders and require wrap tackling, I dunno how you can reasonably leave the knees out of the 'OK to hit' zone on the body

Agreed. There's nothing at all you can do about it from a rules perspective but anytime a player launches himself into another players knee, it just feels wrong.

Quick, someone start a thread called "Manning... The most important player in the NFL".

The volume of injuries this year has been crazy.

Expert analysis: This is very, very bad.

At least it wasn't Bernard Pollard who did it?

Because the officiating has been so sucktastic no one knows what to do. The NFL's policy of trying to reduce injury by slap-dash fixing of the rules has made it even more dangerous. They need to do a massive overhaul of this game.

I don't think the rules had anything to do with this play. I think that is the best way for a DB to try to get Gronk down. If you try to wrap him up or try to tackle him around his torso you'll just bounce off. He's just too big and strong.

Brandon Meriweather, of all people, said we'd see more of this.

The injuries to key players just seem like they're going to be too much to overcome for this team. But with the way they came back in this one, the way they came back against the Saints, and the way they came back against the Broncos... not sure I can count them out, even with this injury.

Stupid question warning: Torn ACL means Gronk is done for the season, right?

Yes. Unquestionably.

9-12 month timetable for recovery. If he's a freak like Welker, he'll be back to start the season. Otherwise, PUP.

It's one of the seasons where expectations are just so lowered with all the injuries.

Just have to focus on enjoying another playoff run with Brady & BB. We haven't got too many of those left either.

Maybe Flag football, 7 on 7?

I think with Brady and Edelman and Amendola, we'd have a great chance.

Not on a play like that, he could have crushed him at any part of his body. If this was a swing pass to the outside, sure. Coming basically directly at a guy who is looking at the ball? He had the entire torso. Or go at the thigh. It's the same hit that put Cobb out for the year. I think it's dirty, but maybe that's for the players to decide at this point. The NFL doesn't make it any easier for them.

So we're probably talking about another Week 6-8 debut for Gronk in 2014 eh?

Hope we find another TE between now and then so we arent running out Mulligan, Hooman and Devlin for the first 7 games.

First Wilfork and now Gronk.  What's next Brady breaks his right hand?  This fucking sucks!

And this tackle looked like the new way that Goodell wants them to tackle just like Meriwhether said.  Instead of leading with the helmet and wrapping at the waist you now cut the legs.

Sorry for you fellas.

I will look for more examples but what welker did was not all that freakish.
There was a time when acl meant 9 to 12 months. I do not think this is true anymore. Not all knee injuries are not created equal but guys coming back in the 6 to 8 month timeframe seem to becoming more and more common

resign dj williams maybe, though I'm not sure what he contributes other than being a warm blocking TE body who already has some knowledge of the system

Think it would be super lucky if he's the Gronk we know at anytime during the '14 season. The second straight year of missed offseason programs aren't going to help him stay healthy either.

Just fucking sucks

Fuck this season.

I'll be interested to see who might step up among the rookie receivers but I'm not expecting a whole lot.

Obviously losing Gronk is a huge blow, but I am cautiously optimistic about the pass catching options.  I think Dobson, Tompkins, and even Boyce have shown some nice things.  Add that to Edelman, Amendola, and Vareen, and I think the offense still has a lot of pretty solid weapons (though none at Gronk's level of course).

The game plans will have to change, and I agree with others, the spread 4 WR looks should happen more often.

I'm as worried about the O-line as I am about not having a decent TE to fill in for Gronk to be honest. Not having Gronk unfortunately will hurt the running game too.

Am I the only one happy if this is only a torn acl, really looked like it could have been much worse.  Acl is becoming the nfl version of Tommy John.  Sucks we won't have him for playoffs but this could have been career ending.

Its amazing that in the space of one year, the Patriots went from very deep/strong at the TE position with a pair of very talented, young guys who were locked up to very weak and thin.

I think he can make it back for the start of next season especially if its just an ACL. Adrian Peterson tore his and his was in the final game of the season.

Yes everyone saying he won't be on the field next year needs to take a breath. We are all upset here. I get it. But a torn acl just is not the same career death sentence that it used to be. There are exceptions certainly but the comparisons to tommy john surgery (except for the timeframe) are appropriate.

Don't forget Mayo, Tommy Kelly, and Vollmer :(

2008 was obviously bad with Brady, but the number of key injuries is about as bad as I can remember for a Pats team.

3rd straight year going into the playoffs without Gronk. This is just getting stupid.

At this point, I'm kinda amazed they were healthy enough to win 3 SB's. How did that happen?  I'm wonder if the wil even get another real shot at this point  Pretty much every run at this point has ended with someone important getting injured.

A lot of people are complaining about the hit but it really looks like he was going for the thigh area and Gronk's stride put the knee there.  The Patriots took out Gordon on a similar play later in the game.  I was in the car but Zo was basically saying it was all about the fact that they are so concerned about concussions that guys have had to adjust to cutting low on these tackles so they don't get flagged for illegal hits.  I realize Zo probably complains about that a lot, but he is pretty much a homer and didn't think the hit was intentional, bad, cheap, or dirty, at least at the time.  Maybe the replay would have him thinking differently?  I just watched it and it looks more like bad luck than bad intent.
