Greg Maddux not going into Hall of Fame as a Brave

Greg Maddux going into Hall of Fame without a logo

"I spent half my career in Chicago and half my career in Atlanta," Maddux said Thursday after working with some of the Texas Rangers' prospects at a winter camp. "I came up a Cub. I played there for six years (and) went back for six more. I was in Atlanta for 11 years. So it comes out to about the same amount of time in both cities. I love both places.

"Obviously, I feel like I had more success as a Brave. We did get a World Series there. But I kind of came up a Cub. For me, I couldn't pick. I really couldn't. Both places mean so much to me personally, to my family. I couldn't pick. So I'm going to go in neutral, I guess."

The Hall of Fame works with the players to determine what logo, if any, fits best on the plaque.

"For those whose careers were built significantly among multiple teams, not having a team logo is equally acceptable," said Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, in a release. "Regardless of the selection, a Hall of Famer belongs to every team for which he played or managed, as well as every fan who followed his career."

It is true that he ended up spending only 1 fewer year with the Cubs than the Braves, but not sure that anyone thinks of him as anything other than a Brave.
I suppose it's not like he wants to go in as a Padre or something, and it seems that the Hall of Fame is willing to defer if the player just wants a blank logo, but still.

This seems perfectly in fitting with the low-key, classy demeanor Maddux exhibited as a player

Since when do they have a say on this? I thought the Hall stopped this whole sideshow a decade ago.

I'm pretty sure that the Hall retains the right to determine which logo is depicted but they can ask the player for his preference in case a career was split evenly between two or more teams.

Good grief.  Is there any level on which being a Cubs fan isn't a complete and total embarrassment?

You have the second best stadium in the majors

Yeah, I thought it was right after Boggs tried to sell his logo spot to the Rays

Well, it seems to be a balance between not having a Wade Boggs situation, and allowing Greg Maddux to do this, but not allowing Gary Carter his choice to go in as a Met (5 years and a World Series) as opposed to an Expo (12 years and the franchise no longer existing)

There definitely does.  I guess as long as it's not ridiculous, like Clemens as a Blue Jay or Manny as a White Sox, there's wiggle room.

They should just ignore the regulation width of the plaque and widen it up to let him have both caps.

Here's how I like to remember him.........

Some pretty good players came through Double A Pittsfield in the mid- late 80s. Along with Maddux were Raphael Palmeiro, Mark Grace, Jamie Moyer, Joe Girardi, Rich Amaral and of course who can forget 1989 National League Rookie of the Year Jerome Walton.

What about the guy who deserved it, Dwight Smith?

Carter has two good seasons as a Met. It would be like enshrining Ray Bourque as an Avalanche.

He was also working for the Mets organization at the time, I wouldn't exactly rule out a Boggs/Winfield situation.

It would be a fitting tribute to give him an extra six inches on either side

I would complain that you Roethlisberger'ed me, but you're apparently the only one who got the fucking joke.

edit: at least I think you got it. Maybe you thought you were making it first. In which case...fuck everybody!

Ha, it was just subtle enough that I just interpreted it literally and riffed off it.  Apologies, tip of the hat, etc.
