Shoulder surgery, it's all over Twitter. Depressing, although better now than next year after Tex is gone, I guess.

So he was playing all last year possibly with a partially torn labrum? They are saying his shoulder was bothering him at last year's Spring Training.... yikes!

It's eerie how the old adage of "roster problems usually work themselves out" is true more often than not.

That said, if he was that good with the injury, I can't wait til 2017

Also if Tex has a good season, this will make it easier to offer him the QO and not worry that he'll take it and block a fully healthy and rarin' to go Bird in 2017. Small consolation but something...

Looking at the careers of BJ Upton, Matt kemp and Adrian Gonzalez after labrum surgery on the lead shoulder, it adds a bit of uncertainty of what Bird can do when he gets back. Even Ellsbury, while he did not have surgery, he likely suffered a partial tear of his labrum when he dislocated his lead shoulder in 2012. Never did regain his power, even in BP.

I wonder if Bird can come back by September, at least to DH. Obviously he can't play 1B since its his throwing shoulder too, but at least he gets to see some pitching and not miss an entire year

I actually think it makes it likely they hope he accepts it, or they may have to bring him back on a 2 year deal at even more money. With Arod gone after 2017 opening up the DH spot and Bird uncertain in 2017 (would benefit with another half season in AAA after missing a year), a good season by Tex in 2016 could open the door for him staying awhile

Of course, with Encarnacion possibly a FA, that would be another option to explore, and probably preferable to bringing back Tex. But if getting under the LT is more important than winning in 2017/2018, then going with Bird and signing a cheaper backup makes more sense.

We'll see, there's obviously a whole season between now and then, and let's see how Tex actually does this year.

My point was just that with a healthy Bird, NY would not want Tex back but would at least consider offering him a QO to try to get the first round pick, rolling the dice that he wouldn't accept it. Now that Bird is a question mark for 2017, NY can safely offer Tex the QO and be happy either way. It's a very small point, but it is something.

So Cashman said this afternoon that they're not going to try to sign someone for the major league roster to fill Bird's spot, but they will try to get someone on a minor league deal to be the new AAA 1B. This leaves them quite thin at both 1B and 3B behind the starters, 3B backup is still the hope that Castro (the starting 2B) can play somewhere he never has and now 1B backup is Ackley or maybe McCann with Sanchez moving to first-string C.

FWIW, they are well covered at DH behind A-Rod, Beltran would move there and Hicks or Heathcott or Mason Williams or Ackley would fill in in the OF, immediate decided defensive upgrade.

So, stay healthy, Tex and Headley. Thanks in advance.

He is, but he is still holding out for a starting job, plus it doesn't seem like Cashman is interested no matter how low the price goes.
