Unfortunately they've had too much practice lately dealing with these situations. Sports Hub does a great job dealing with these and throwing it to WBZ-TV / Radio when appropriate then keeping the discussion rather rational.

To be fair that was right after the ice cream truck analysis which probably has him distracted thinking of food.

It was very good, and Gresh definitely deserved it.  McAdam is very good on the radio, it's too bad he's got that dopey drawl.  He's got a good, quick mind for argument.

That was fantastic. He murdered GRESH! completely and refused to let GRESH run over him like Zolak does. I'd listen to McAdam ten times out of ten over GRESH. His drawl doesn't really bother me.

I heard a little of it:

Gresh: Baseball won't take any action without government involvement. They only respond to Congressional hearings and threats from subcommittees. The NFL is much more proactive.

McAdam: Baseball does not have subpoena power like the feds do. If someone is using a masking agent, baseball can't raid their house, their doctor's office, their phone records etc. And unlike the NFL, baseball has implemented full HGH testing, They are the only sport with HGH testing. NFL keeps saying they will, but no testing to date.

Gresh thought the commish is going too tough on ARod. McAdam said they need to set an example to clean up the game. ARod tried to cover up the evidence.

Gresh kept going to how the NFL is the standard, but MCAdam shot him down at every turn.

McAdam went on about how NFL players are not stigmitized for failing drug tests like baseball players. Rodney Harrison is still a hero in this town because he used the lame excuse that he was trying to get back quickly to help his team. Unlike Harrison, Ryan Braun's career will never be the same after failing a test.

That's all I heard. McAdam is great in these types of discussions because he is not emotional. He kills with facts. Awesome radio.

Paraphrasing: Gresh also kept saying that players should fight it if they didn't test positive.  McAdam countered by saying that they had evidence of checks being sent to Biogenesis, which is enough for a suspension.  An analogy Sean used was saying if he bought crack on a street corner and got arrested then he can't just say to a judge: "I don't have a crack in my system, and never failed a drug test!" to get out of trouble.

Zolak kept piping in saying "Braun has a 100 million dollar contract that he got presumably due to steroid use, how punished can he really be?" Wasn't really relevant to the discussion.  Gresh also kept going back to f "MLB won't act unless the government gets involved" which McAdam easily countered with "They don't have the power to subpoena people and force them to testify."

Gresh also didn't think enough big names have been busted.  McAdam mentioned Manny and Braun, two bigger names than anyone in the NFL that have been busted.

The pick a lane comment was great from McAdam.

What I found funny was GRESH was going back and forth between baseball is using the gov't and is being too hard on players, I mean they never even failed a drug test to baseball is too lax on players due to the Sosa / McGwire era. THen he some how came to the revelation that the NFL is clean and thats why no one in the NFL gets caught.

He also tried his best to ignore the fact that Rodney got caught in a gov't investigation and got suspended, but it didn't fit his story so he just kept yelling.'

That segment really showed everything that is wrong with GRESH

Only reason I'm watching is a couple friends kids play for Cohasset, but they're getting blown out and Man City is starting

I caught about 10 minutes of Zo/Flynn, and I was actually pretty impressed. Zo started to get a little bombastic, and Flynn was fairly aggressive with him. It lead to some pretty good radio. Hardy & Flynn bore me as a duo, but Flynn and Zo were pretty good.

Of course, anytime you take Gresh out of the equation, it's an unquestionable upgrade.

Wrong. Gresh played at national football powerhouse URI.

That's a bit different, Sparky. Gresh knows who the Mike is and other cool football buzzwords. Furthermore, he's not afraid to use them incorrectly unlike some other non-URI-playing jabronies.

Radio must be really hard to do. Really hard. Because Gresh sounds like a blowhard, an annoying know-it-all at the end of the bar who you can't get away from, a pompous windbag who never says anything interesting but who thinks he's compelling, yet he commands a big salary and they can't find anyone to replace him who they think would do a better job. That's the only explanation I can come with. It's harder than it looks. Same thing for other media personalities here who to me seem like talentless hacks but who continue to be gainfully employed despite their blatant mediocrity. Tanguay is utterly moronic. I think that guy Mut brings nothing to the table. Greg Dickerson? Really?

In the case of Gresh, is it possible he brings value because he ISN'T paid that much and Zolak protects him? Tanguay, does he work for peanuts? Or is it just about the ratings in Gresh's case? The ratings are good, the ratings are God, give the people what they want.

Maybe I just answered my own question.

I remember reading (either here or on BSMW) that Gresh works cheap, and that's how he got his job and all lands all those fill-in gigs on CSNNE.  As a result, he's not well liked in the market.   Is it his fault that he's a no-talent a**-clown?  Whoever it was at CBS and CSSNE (especially, for putting that goon in front of a camera) that decided to hire him are the ones that should lose their jobs.

Around 11am-ish Gresh and Zolak had a 15 minute or so discussion about Brandon Spikes.  Gresh's voice was grating and too loud, but the discussion was detailed about how and why Spike's skill set isn't a fit for this year's iteration of the Patriots and how the Patriots could specifically attack Spikes and take advantage of him during Sunday's game.

It was a rational, fact based, informative discussion about football Xs and Os.

For all the crap we give our local radio hosts (and it is mostly well deserved) I thought it fair to point out that actual football discussion can happen on the radio.  It would obviously be impossible to fill a 4 hour block with that type of discussion, but at least for that short spurt it was football discussion on the radio that was actually worth listening to.

Heard that...it was quite good. Gresh does know football, when he isn't trying too hard to convince the listener he knows football by using terms like "zero set" incessantly. And Zolak really can add excellent analysis...when he's not bouncing off the walls from too much Red Bull.

Of course, it was preceded by a segment where Zolak made fun of Vollmer & Soderberg's accents that was, shall we say, less than enlightened.

FWIW, I vividly remember Fred Smerlas talking about the mechanics of defensive line play one time on WEEI years ago and I found the discussion very interesting and informative. Of course, 99.9% of what he's had to say before and since then was garbage.

They had a good 20 minute segment on Stork's play at center last game earlier this week that was quite good as well.

I have to give credit where it's due, Gresh hasn't been so bad during football season this year. He actually is enjoyable to listen to most times, especially when he's not bro-ing it up.

And I was really impressed with the yeoman's work that he did on Saturday. I'm pretty sure he called five or six straight high school football games on TV and the radio. That's pretty hard, I would imagine. Good job, Gresh.

Was gonna chime in on his high school football work as well.  I only watched the Xaverian/Everett game, but he really was quite good.  Definitely well prepared.  I don't like the guy very much, but walked away impressed.

They just had Giants P Steve Weatherford on live from Radio Row.  Listening to Weatherford on local radio here, he's got a big-time future in the broadcast business after he's done if he wants it.  He's a great interview.
