Gresh had a really long rant today responding to an aritcle comparing PED coverage between baseball and football.  He 100% defended the public opinion that it's a bigger problem in baseball.  He was emphatic, and he went on for at least 4 or 5 minutes about how it's dumb for this guy to write an article thinking it's weird that the coverage of the two is different.   He believes the NFL addressed the problem seriously when it first came up.  He somehow managed, while defending the NFL, to concede that some of it's stance is just PR and that they may not have the strictest testing system.  It was a good reminder that with football ending and the baseball season coming  that this show isn't worth listening to.

Now, he didn't play enough to qualify, (which doesn't matter for the sake of this conversation, since Gresh is looking at the same sample and saying he can't do something, not that the jury is still out) but Kaepernick also completed more than 62% of his passes which is just outside the top 10. He also averaged 8.3 yards per attempt, which put him higher than the NFL leader (RG3 at 8.14).  His 4th quarter passer rating was over 120.

So, he can run, throws hard (?), apparently throws accurately and plays pretty well late in games. Yeah, he sucks.

While I find Gresh barely tolerable at best, nothing makes me change stations faster than when he starts doing his awful Mayor Menino impression.  He does it so often that he seems to be under the delusion that it is hilarious while nothing could be further from the truth.  Boy would Marc Bertrand be a huge upgrade from 10-2.

I 100% disagree. The Mayor Menino is by far the best thing GRESH!!! does IMO. I mean, that's not saying much but it's much better than anything else coming out of his mouth.

My friend just started listening to Gresh & Zo, and 98.5 in general, last week.

He asked me what college Gresh played at and if he was drafted/had a NFL career at all. Had to break the bad news to him.

Gresh said today that he can run a 5.25 40.  That would place him 25th at this year's combine for offensive linemen.

15.25 I'd believe.

He said he can still bench 17 reps at 225 pounds.

Loving Zo without GRESH this week.  Genuinely hilarious.  Also, some real good football talk with Mike Flynn.

GRESH so comes off like he wants to "fit in with the cool kid."  The show is a much better listen without him.

Zo has really grown on me. He is a lot more reigned in as well when Gresh is not there and he has to run the show.

The show is 10x better without GRESH there. Zolak is more calm and Flynn can actually debate football with him without yelling over Zolak everytime Zo tries to speak.

Flynn has to be cheaper than GRESH and he has better production. I wish they'd look at the value chart and just cut Gresh and take the cap hit. The Patriots would have a long time ago.

As soon as I heard Gresh making stupid voices during the crossover with T&R I had to turn it off.  This show was so much better with Flynn last week.  :(

I'm not sure how WEEI is handling it but IMO Sports Hub couldn't be handling this any better. There ability to leverage WBZ TV is a huge plus for them from both an interview standpoint and cutting into live feeds.

The same way just not as good as having WBZ TV.  Salk and Holley were great yesterday and kept cutting to national news feeds or Howie Carr.

No, he said that people choose to come out.

He said that Jackie Robinson didn't choose to be black, which essentially is saying that because Collins' homosexuality isn't readily apparent, it was therefore his choice to announce it, and the two situations are incomparable.

I'm not really sure what he's getting at.  Collins made a choice to come out, yes, but he didn't choose to be gay.  Robinson didn't have the option of hiding who he really was, and there have surely been countless gay athletes who never came out while they played, but I don't see how that diminishes the fact that Collins was the first one to do so.

Callahan made almost exactly the same point in the 5 minutes I listened to him this morning.  Collins is not Jackie Robinson because Robinson could not hide who he was and Collins obviously could.  It is a stupid point made to needlessly distinguish between the two situations.  The situations are not the same for a bunch of reasons, but that doesn't mean that Collins isn't courageous or that what he did wasn't hard, or that it wasn't important in its own right.

The other piece of it is not-so-thinly-velied suggestion that Collins coming out really isn't "necessary" and sports (and life) would be better if we didn't have to deal wtih these uppity gay people shoving their lifestyles in our collective faces.  Not sure if Gresh was going for that angle, but Callahan certainly was.

Some caller made a Jaws reference yesterday, which Gresh completed didn't understand, and Gresh responded "sorry dude, I don't watch those '70s movies."

I wanted to come here in praise of the Gresh and Zo regular interview with Ray Bourque. Interviews with former athletes are a dime a dozen in sports media, but I really enjoy what Bourque has to offer. It's not the usual cliche-filled crap, and it's more that just token platitudes, and they conversations usually go pretty long (10+ minutes at least). Bourque really seems level headed, gives good insight, and still really loves the Bruins. I was slightly worried about hard feelings when they sent down Chris Bourque earlier in the season, but none of that comes into it.

I don't know if anyone caught this, and I was driving at the time so wasn't paying 100% attention, but did Gresh get all butthurt that a texter stated he hated Finnish cuisine because it was healthy, and that he had a bit of a weight problem?  Which, it isn't as far as I know, but that's beyond the point.

Wasn't sure if he was joking, but he went on for a few minutes about how he's not fat and that's a misconception, that he has a medical condition called a "high stomach", which I'm pretty sure doesn't exist.  He really is unbearable all the time.

Tried to listen on my lunchbreak today. Turned it off when they entered their 46th consecutive minute (might be an understatement as I missed the first 2 hrs of the show) talking about how "awesome" it would be if there was a Super Bowl in Foxboro.

They really shouldn't be on the air (Gresh especially) outside of football season.

Noty really a commentary on Gresh but they just had Mark maddon (sp?) a hockey "expert" from Pittsburgh on...
according to him
Bergeron is the Bruins best offensive player
Rask is average at best and his play vs. the Rangers was a "clown act" at times
Rask is the weak link for the Bruins
The goaltending match-up is a wash
Krug could lose the series for Boston
Bruins hated Marc Savard and that's why no one retaliated against Cooke's hit

Really? Is that why Shawn Thornton beat the shit out of Cooke one of the next times the Pens faced the B's? Is that why the Bruin players asked the league to put Savard's name on the Cup in 2011?

Maddon sounds like a clown. Please tell me that Gresh or Zo challenged him on some of this nonsense.

They're still kinda processing through it.  Hardy is ripping him and Gresh is kinda riding the fence.  They've only taken 1 caller since so hopefully they take some more this hour

He claimed goaltending was a wash and the Bruins only have a very slight advantage on defense.  The guy has absolutely no credibility whatsoever after listening to the things he was claiming, what a moron!

Hockey expert (from the wikipedia link::)
Madden has also worked within mainstream sports journalism, including fifteen years at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he primarily covered high schools for the paper's suburban sections, as well as stints at the now-defunct Penguins Report and the weekly Pittsburgh City Paper.
Another area of sports in which Madden is heavily involved is the game of street hockey. Madden runs Street Hockey USA, and is also involved in the American Street Hockey Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to growing the game of street/dek/ball hockey in America. He has coached numerous National Champion teams over the years (most notably his Pittsburgh Wizards team), as well as coaching the United States Junior team to a gold medal in the 2006 World Junior Championship in Germany.

Not a fan of Madden but I've heard that Savard was not well-liked in the locker room either, however that had nothing to do with instant retaliation on the Cooke hit, they didn't retaliate on the Cooke hit because no one saw it.  I don't know if I ever heard "hate" but I've definitely heard that he wasn't super popular

I've heard the same, FWIW. Also he apparently threw Sobotka under the bus in the locker room post game for the too many men penalty in Game 7 of the Philly series in 2010 (which was really Savard's fault) which led to Sobotoka demanding to be traded.

I'll join the crew agreeing no one liked Savvy, but that wasn't why no one jumped to his defense after Cooke. It was behind the play, and I think only one player could see it (Lucic, who wasn't near the play). The refs also had Cooke wrapped up pretty quick to avoid some of t he bloodshed.

deep inside Guido territory
Feldman put out a great montage for tonight's game and the start of it was a report about Tim Thomas not going to the White House.  A caller says they only did that for political reasons and all of a sudden Gresh goes off on him.  It was pretty entertaining to say the least.

I'm listening to the online feed on iTunes. Did I just hear a caller ask Gresh if he ate mashed potatoes in the shape of Belichick's unit?

You did. You also heard Zolak laughing so hard that even after his microphone was turned off you could hear it over the flustered Gresh trying to move on.

Also, Zolak's "singing" to "I Wanna Rock" at the Friday 1 PM open is always worth it. ROCK!

Never been a big fan, but they were very good today following Hernandez story. Up on all the news, made a good effort to separate static from noise, used the caveat of speculation when needed, gave some chatter to on-field ramifications but without prioritizing it...I thought it was a good listen.
