Your worst nightmare
So far, Gresh has made several references to "having nuts" and "nut busting" in the span of less than an hour. This guy has a wife and kids? He's like Newman from Seinfeld. Not a fan of Tanguay, but was he really that much worse than Gresh?

Tanguay was far and away better than Gresh and its not even close. Tanguay's biggest sin is that he falls in love with teams and players, wants to or feels that he is their close and personal friend as opposed to another member of the media and refuses to see any of their faults.

Quite frankly, the exact opposite of Felger who sometimes goes looking for boogeymen where they don't exist.

It's amazing how much more enjoyable the midday show had been with Gresh away on vacation. I didn't think to switch over to Adam Jones' show on ESPN at noon once last week, and I already can't wait for it to begin today.
Crap, the ESPN Boston radio show from 12-2 abruptly ended yesterday. I'm sick of Gresh already today and I have no respite waiting for me at noon. :(

Of all the countless number of things that bother me about GRESH!!!!, I think number one is that he thinks that speaking slower with added emphasis means that your statement is more legitimate. You can always tell when he thinks he's making the definitive point in the discussion, because he acts as if he's building up the suspense as we all wait with baited breath for him to issue a decree.

He is the worst. Hands down. Automatic station change for me, and the funny thing is that I don't think he's awful during Pats games.

Zo paired with Shaughnessy is actually a pretty good listen today.

Without GRESH!!!!, Zo is far less spastic, and resembles more of what he's like on the Patriots broadcasts. He doesn't have a "wannabe cool kid" next to him enabling him to yell off of the microphone, and scream about GLOWSTICKS! GLOWSTICKS! for four hours.

I'd love to hear Zolak with a capable and mature partner, because he truly does a better job of breaking down the X's and O's of football than anybody else right now (certainly among radio guys, at least. Greg Bedard and Mike Reiss are both excellent in print).

Gresh was on the post game today and said the Pats should have got called for faceguarding on that 4th qtr non-pi call. Seriously? Should he know better after the 18-1 Super Bowl?

Was listening to the pregame while driving to the Sox game. When I had to choose between Gresh on one station and Dale Arnold on the other, I turned off the radio.

Driving home from the Sox the choice was Smerlas and Butch Stearns on one, Gresh and some unknown dimwit on the pther. I flipped to soft rock on XM.

Awful. At least Butch has apparently transitioned nicely from the emptiest suit on TV to the emptiest suit on the radio.

FYI, on the crossover, Gresh just said he's gonna rant on why the stat geeks are ruining baseball for his 10 year old son.

I ask you, just how dumb will he sound?

You guys do realize that not everyone watches baseball the same way and that there are a lot of baseball fans that don't give a shit about WAR and VORP and stuff like that right?

That's fine. But why does not giving a shit about WAR and VORP make it okay to vilify those that do as "ruining baseball"? I get not caring or understanding so-called advanced stats, but why do so many who "don't care" about these stats seem to care so much about demonizing them and those who use them?

It's the same thing that Toucher was saying this morning, so-called junior sabermetricians, are basically calling anyone that thought Cabrera should win the MVP knuckle-dragging morons for not going by their "stats" and voting for Trout who according to them was far and away a much better candidate.

I'll also add that as much as wannabe sabermetricians want the average fan and reporter to change, they aren't going to. There will be an appreciation for some stats like OBP and OPS and such, but I'm not sure WAR or VORP or any of the other statistics are ever going to be widely understood or popular. A majority of the population just isn't wired to understand or care.

Here's the thing I don't get ...

At some point you are introduced to baseball, and you start to use stats. Let's say you start with average (you are new to baseball, good place to start). You notice a trend that the better players have averages over .300. But after time, you start to realize that not all .300 hitters bring equal value. There's a difference between the guy hitting 180 singles and the one crushing 40 home runs along with it. I mean, everyone must have that thought at some point.

Then, you start to expand. You might discover OBP or SLG. And now you are incorporating those stats. But then you start seeing things like, hey, that hitter on my team consistently steals 50 bases! So you might want to evaluate baserunning (man, he sure does take that extra base more often than the next guy). Or there's that guy that plays an amazing centerfield. So you start to look at some simple fielding stats.

In other words, you are just looking at various stats that try to place value on the things that you see. The "traditionalists" do this. Everyone does this. And they are all using stats. Now, this is where I don't get where the 'hate' comes in ... someone who might be using an advanced stat is only using that stat because they've asked all those questions and someone really smart put together a stat that tries to incorporate all the natural observations that you have had (e.g. not all 300 hitters are the same).

I just don't get what the big deal is. I think if you sat down with the Murray Chasse's of the world, and just had a normal conversation, and didn't even bring up the advanced stats, but just asked questions, they would realize that they agree a lot more with the 'geeks' then they think they do. Hey Murray, do you think all 300 hitters are the same? Do you think that defense and value brings value? etc.

This is such an odd/weird debate.

What a stupid argument these clowns in Houston are bringing to the table.

"From the Super Bowl in 2007 to the playoff game vs Tim Tebow, how many big games have you won?"

well (and I can't believe i'm going to use the following phrase) in Andy's defense, they baited him with something like "one day if you work hard, you'll be in a top 10 market"
which on its own makes zero sense

It was truly awful radio. Gresh was baited but he's an idiot for taking the bait. It was like a who could be a bigger douche competition and it ruined a segment that should have been good . Zolak was excellent in trying to rope it back in

I live in Houston and I can't get a feel for the sports radio down here. I swear every time I turn on the local ESPN Radio guys, they're just talking about gambling.

I've been listening quite a bit leading up to Sunday's game, and I can't make heads or tails of whether they're even excited for the game. I think it's because the callers just seem neutered. I know this is a football town, but I don't see the passion come through on the airwaves.

After the team blew it on the final weekend of the regular season, I expected fans to call in berating Schaub as we would in Boston, but it didn't happen.

Maybe people are just too focused on CFB?

The fans are simply not as passionate about pro sports outside of the Cowboys as we are in the Northeast. I haven't lived down South in a long time, but when I did it was all college football all the time. It didn't matter if it was the middle of March. Sure, you'd get some college hoops too but college football is The King. In Texas, they care more about how good the Aggies or Longhorns are than they do the Rangers, Mavericks, and the shitty Astros and Rockets. Hell, they care more about high school football more than they do pro sports.

The Houston market is actually Houston/Galveston, but yeah, Dallas/Ft. Worth is 5th.

Top 10

1. NY
2. LA
3.CHI
4. SF
5. DAL/FW
6. HOU/GAL
7. DC
8. PHI
9. ATL
10. BOS

Now these are broad numbers, they don't really have anything to do with popularity of programs. Some cities are just bigger. I've never been to Houston but I have a feeling the Boston sports radio culture is taken a lot more serious than the Houston sports radio culture. Just a guess.

I've only visited Houston once and it's huge from a geography standpoint. It's not even really a city from a traditional standpoint. I stayed in Downtown Houston and couldn't walk really anywhere as there was nothing but a few small shops and generic office buildings. Had to take a cab 5 miles to a mall area. It's like Hartford x 30.

From a population and geography standpoint:

Houston: According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 2.1 million people within an area of 656.3 square miles (1,700 km[sup]2[/sup])

Boston: The city proper, covering 48.43 square miles (125.43 square km), had an estimated population of 625,087 in 2011 according to the U.S. Census,[sup][7][/sup] making it the 21st largest in the country.[sup][6][/sup] Boston is also the county seat of Suffolk County and anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country.[sup][9][/sup]

When Tom E. Curran was there in 2005 covering Superbowl 39 for the Projo, he hated it and called it something like "A Prarie Los Angeles with five downtowns and no sense of urban planning."

This is so true and perfectly stated.

And for those wondering, it's because Houston has no zoning ordinances, so people have just built wherever.

Houston is not only in the top 10 but ranked number 6? Seriously? I never would have guessed that.
San Diego is like the 8th largest city by population but the 20th TV market....go figure. But the population is going south and west....Houston should be in the Top 10. This begs the question, why doesn't the NHL move a struggling team there? Thye have and do have hockey In Houston...but I digress.
