Hahah it's funny. I was listening this morning and Gresh was attempting to talk baseball and I thought to myself. "Oh Gresh, when you talk football I wonder how you could possibly know any less. Then I hear you talk about baseball."
Yeah, and let me be clear, when I say he's mediocore on football I mean compared to the average radio host. The bar and rating aren't all that high.

Gresh, Zo, and CHB were absolutely brutal this morning while talking about the Red Sox.

CHB was talking about the supposed holes the Sox had and even threw in the line, "And they have no closer!!!!!"

Neither Gresh nor Zo corrected CHB. It was not until a texter chimed in that they have Andrew Bailey slated to close out games.

Listening to CHB on the radio is terrible. You can tell that he absolutely LOVES it when any local team is struggling, and if they aren't, he will pretend they are(see: 2011 Patriots).

Saying that 2012 Boston Red Sox have holes is a perfectly cromulent thing for any analyst to say. The closer hysteria probably isn't, but you shouldn't kill CHB for telling the truth.

But he really is not telling the truth. He is making off like the team "has no closer," which is not true.

And neither Gresh nor Zolak even bothered to mention Bailey.

I agreed with you about that closer issue is pretty much moot, it's obviously Bailey. But the Sox have some major holes to fill and I don't think that they did that this winter.

Any chance that Dale Arnold is on the radar for the Hub midday slot? His contract at WEEI finally ends this week. I don't think he's ideal for them, being that they're aiming for a younger audience, but I wonder if they'd view him as an upgrade here.

I also thought this week having Johnston and Flynn on in the mornings, and Bertrand co-hosting the whole week in afternoons(thought this was most interesting, since Felger rarely takes days off outside of summertime) may have been a bit of an audition for more airtime.

Dale & Bertrand 10-2? Johnston & Flynn 10-2 with Bertrand picking up more weekend time? Maybe Dale just moves his weekend hosting gig over to the Hub?

Jen Royle also seems to have a radio gig she hasn't announced yet, though I'd imagine she's hired at WEEI after Dale leaves since she's appeared multiple times there in the past.

Could be an interesting week in sports radio, though I could be just wishcasting some changes.

Hard to believe Dale and Holley have been off the air for a year now. I haven't listened to WEEI live since then, but do grab the occasional podcast if one of the shows has an interesting guest on. 98.5 REALLY needs to do something about Gresh though, I've had enough of the know it all loudmouth act and it's time to upgrade the mid-day show (Bertrand, Arnold, Wayland Flowers & Madame, or just about anyone else but Gresh).

Why do they have to do anything? They're winning the ratings battle handily. Hosts won't be removed until ratings slip.

It's really unlistenable. They are saved by the crap on WEEI. Mut and Merloni is by far the worst tandem on EEI and the one I listen to by far the most. Gresh is so bad I would bet there are 200 members here that could do a better job. Probably 500.

True, but resting on its laurels is how EEI got into the position they're in. Besides, why pay Andy Gresh when you could pay someone other than Andy Gresh?

Resting on your laurels when you're the only game in town is....well....TOTALLY different from resting on the laurels that are beating the everloving piss out of what used to be the only game in town. If WEEI brings in a show that could give Gresh and Zo a run then maybe TSH will have some thinking to do but resting on your laurels is ok when said laurels are kicking all sorts of ratings ass.

In other words....

Because they're beating the hell out of the worst show from the other station. I'd rank Gresh & Zo 5th at best of the 6th daily shows(morning, mid day, drive time) on both stations, they just happen to be up against the other worst one. If you can improve your lineup, why wouldn't you?

It's very rare I've heard anyone say, you know what show I like.....Gresh & Zolak.

It's a tough move to justify, though, when GRESH and Zolak are crushing "Mut and Merloni" in the ratings. Also, Felger and Mazz actually had lower ratings in January than GRESH and Zo did. Granted, a lot of that is probably explained by the simulcast, but it's even harder to explain firing GRESH when he's not on the lowest rated daytime show.

Managing a radio station is partially about handling personnel, and I bet it would generate some uneasy feelings over there if the host on a show that's winning its time slot was canned. As disheartening as it is to say, GRESH will be on 98.5 as long as Mut and Merloni host middays on EEI.

If I were EEI, I would admit the Holley and Ordway experiment isn't working, and return the programming to the way it was before last March. Dale and Holley would at least regain midday prominence. I think "The Big Show" is a lost cause, frankly, until Ordway's contract expires.

I agree. It's a tough move to justify when they're in first, though I really think at this point the Hub could put anyone in that slot and beat WEEI at 10-2.

I don't put too much into them outrating Felger and Mazz. I think if they switched time slots F&M get a higher rating at 10-2 and Gresh and Zo get a lower one at 2-6.

Again, I'm probably just wishcasting a change here, it probably makes much more sense to stand pat, just seems the pieces fit for a change since I don't know of many fans of Gresh & Zo.

I like how you think that since you don't know many fans of the show that they should probably switch things up despite the fact that they're dominating the time slot. You should call the GM over there and tell them that you don't know anyone who likes Gresh and Zo since they clearly don't seem to be getting the 'friends of mcpckl who talk about sports talk radio w/other people in social settings' listener trend, so you'd do well to make them aware of it.

K. Thanks for your invaluable input.

Don't see how dominating the time slot against another awful show means you're not allowed to try and improve. If one show is a fly buzzing around your head, and the other is a kick in your balls, do you just say hey our fly is better than a kick in the balls let's not think of changing anything!

I think their ratings are just from the time slot/station they're on much more than anything the two hosts are doing. Much like all the shows that followed Seinfeld on TV. I'd think if they could bring in better hosts that would increase their ratings even more, that would be worth something to the station.

But maybe I'm wrong.

I don't disagree with you; I loathe GRESH as well.

But I see no way how "The Sports Hub's" management can justify firing a host who's dominating his time slot. These hosts are paid to draw ratings, and GRESH and Zo are leading in the ratings from 10-2.

There isn't a reason for 98.5 to make changes to the weekday lineup right now. The comparisons to EEI remaining stagnant for much of last decade are invalid, in my mind, because "The Sports Hub" has competition whom they have consistently beaten for the better part of a year and a half now. Unlike the WEEI of five years ago, "The Sports Hub" has a barometer to measure themselves against, and judging by their record, the formula is working.

As far as Dale goes, I don't see where he would fit in with 98.5. I would maybe a suggest a weekly stint on Felger and Mazz, but they're simulcast on Comcast and Dale works for NESN. He could be their "super sub," but I'm not sure he would accept the position. Also, I think it's important for "The Sports Hub" to continue to develop their own voice, and not just put on EEI retreads. Bertrand, Ryan Johnston, Mike Flynn, and others should be given the summer/vacation fill-in roles.

I think if Dale has a role with 98.5, it's as a default go-to guy for the Bruins. Perhaps regular spots during segments on a couple shows during hockey season and occasionally in the offseason. Nothing more than that. Especially because, in my opinion, 98.5 is a station built on personality (Wallach excluded), and Dale has none.

I don't think they need him. Toucher and Rich have been covering hockey since WBCN and felger and mazz can hold their own as well. I just don't see where a bland Dale Arnold would fit in.

Did anyone happen to hear Gresh today during the switch over from T&R to G&Z? He mentioned Amelie Benjamin being suspended for "looking at Red Sox players weiners" while she was on the beat. It was awkward as shit. I can't imagine that going over well after Felger got in trouble for talking about Heidi and Tek.

Gresh is a butthead. Yesterday I heard him talking about how his college coaches used to instruct him in cheating while he was URI. A few things:

1. Would coaches really go out of their way to help Andy Gresh. Andy fucking Gresh stay in school? From what I understand, he was a backup lineman. Who gives a shit.
2. This is URI we're talking about (no offense, URI) but it's not like Gresh was matriculating at Brown or Harvard. How tough could his classes be and how much of a dipshit must Gresh be that he can't pass his class?

His bragging just came off as pompous crap, like he was proud of the fact that he was stupid and that he "partied waaaayy toooo hard" (DUDE! You had to be there!) in college and he figured out a way (through the help of the athletic department -- just like the star athletes do!) to bullshit his way through school. He's a fucking dolt. And he kept trying to rope Zolak into the discussion ("Dude, you totally did the same things I did, right, brah?") and Zolak wasn't taking the bait. At that point I had to turn off Andy Gresh's stroll down retard lane and flipped it over to Mut and Merloni where Merloni was whining about something.

So, thanks for that dickface.

Today's highlight: Using a phony Adam Schefter tweet (debunked in our BBTL forum within seconds of being posted) about the "RG3 trade being voided" as the foundation for a lecture on why the "cap ISN'T crap." Like I'm gonna listen to a guy who brags about cheating his way through state school on something involving math.

After listening to T&R, especially Toucher, discussing not allowing his son to play football, for the first time I am really interested in what Gresh and Zo have to say on the topic.
Me too, but I had to laugh when Gresh tried to act like an expert by dropping the "Zo and I played football" line within five minutes of the show starting.

Gresh deserves a lot of the shit that he gets when he talks about his football "career" especially when he wants to make it sound like he played in the pros. However, when it comes to something like this I have no problem listening to his points because he's seen a lot more stuff on the field (even as a 1-AA backup) than most of us.

What's he crying about now?

BTW, Gresh is probably (and this is saying a lot) the thinnest-skinned Boston media member. Even worse than John Dennis. A week or so ago he was crying about the Twitter feud that he got into with an athlete (I can't remember exactly who it was) but Gresh called him a pussy or something similar. Basically his whining was that everyone was really mean to him and that HE (Andy Gresh) didn't deserve the amount of crap he got.

I've worked with Gresh on and off over the past few years and this is absolutely true. Off the air in fact, it's FAR worse. The guy hates everything, and everyone that has ever doubted a single word he's said. He hates former co-workers and interns who made jokes about him 4 years ago. On the air he tries desperately to cover up his immense insecurities but every show, at least once or twice, they come out. I know it's incredibly taxing for those who work with him directly on the show because they must constantly diffuse non-issues that he's built up in his head instead of preparing for the show.

And he weighs nearly 400 pounds and walks around barefoot a lot.

Sweet Georgia Brown, I'm glad that I'm done with my lunch after reading that last sentence.

But it's pretty obvious that he has a big problem with insecurity, which is strange if you think about the world in which he works. And I think that in the hyper-competitive sports media industry, if you appear to let the slings and arrows of listeners, readers and colleagues bug you; you're going to keep getting it much worse. It's a lot like junior high in that regard.

A caller suggested that he (Gresh) and Zo (and the 2 pm-6 pm drones) have been reacting to news of Beckett's recent seemingly self-created problems with unrestrained glee and have been engaging in a "witch hunt." Gresh went bugfuck, hung up on the guy and went on a self-serving rant that had me pissing in my pants. Pretty much presented as a dink.

It's amazing how much more enjoyable the midday show had been with Gresh away on vacation. I didn't think to switch over to Adam Jones' show on ESPN at noon once last week, and I already can't wait for it to begin today.

I can get on board with this. DA does a good job on the night shift, but I'd love to see 98.5 put him with a cohost at the 10-2. He might even work well enough with Zo, who I consider mostly harmless.
