Now that Gordon Hayward has opted out, here are the paths forward:

-Re-signs with Boston
-Signs with ATL, CHA or NY outright
-Boston and Hayward work a sign and trade deal to a team over the cap

EDIT: CHA probably doesn't have enough cap space to sign Hayward.

No, but Ainge and Kupchak have a good working relationship and Charlotte does have a large expiring deal that covers what Hayward would make.

Why did the C’s extend the opt out period for Hayward? I have to think there was some understanding between the team and Gordon that will eventually make sense. If he is just leaving, why wouldn’t he have just opted out a couple days ago?

Well technically it isn't an opt out, it's automatic when the time expires.
As to why... no reason not to, and for both sides it gives you more time to see what the roster looks like, what kind of trade offers, etc.

They could have asked for more time to see how other things played out. If we trade Gordon to the Hawks into their cap space we get a trade exception, which would have allowed us to have traded for Kelly Oubre like the Warriors did. That is what made me the most upset when I saw it happed right at the deadline. I can easily see that being a part of many conversations between BOS, ATL, OKC, GSW.

Celtics couldn't really have made that move though, ATL isn't trading for Hayward on a 1 year deal, and a S&T can't be done until after FA opens

It really would suck if after all this, he just walks.

Especially now. Do it 2 days ago when the team has more options pre draft.
Yeah, I can't help it. I would have some animosity towards Heywould if he jets after all this time, without at least helping us via sign and trade. We paid him a lot of money to watch him in near constant state of recovery.

Missing out on Kelly Oubre in order to keep options open with Hayward (among other options) seems like a pretty damn decent tradeoff.

Also I would guess that DA is playing this like Horford - he's willing to sign GH but he has a firm # in mind and he's encouraging GH to see if he could hit a HR somewhere else.

If Kelly Oubre is ever the answer, then I don't want to know the question...

That move may have just snuck GSW into a play-in game...

If Ainge flipped Hayward for the opportunity to pay Oubre $15 million in the last season of his current deal, then presumably extend him, I'd have to question everything I know about the Celtics, Danny Ainge, basketball, and to some degree, my own conception of reality.

Edit: Oubre is a fine player, but I don't consider him to be particularly close to Hayward. His performance on the court has always struck me as erratic, especially on defense. He's capable of some impressive, flashy plays, but I'm not sure he's the guy I'd want to see next to Brown and Tatum long term, especially since I'm not sure there was a way to make the salaries work without dealing Smart.

Btw I do get the Oubre logic, and this is very much an “it’s Lacob’s money, not mine” situation.

On the other hand, $80M Kelly Oubre will never get old. I suppose you can add Wiggins to that and get a $120M wing duo? Most athletic.

Normally yes, the only possible confounding factor is that the league was pissed about the optics of the Bogdanovic botched S&T.

Sacto kept Bjelica, and of course Hield wants more run, so it does feel like Bogdanovic is still out there but Celts need Hayward to help them create a TPE for that to work.
