Does anyone know when Google Voice is going to be released to the public? I enter my email for an invite about two months ago and still have not heard.

2 months seems long. Maybe they are just getting swamped with invites now that it's been in the news more. I got my account within about 2 weeks or entering my email address about 6 months ago.

I've been waiting a month or so. If anyone has an invite left I would be interested.

I have a google voice account/number which i forward to my cell phone. Text show up just fine, but voice mail is weird. It translates it into text which is fine except it isn't terribly accurate. What I am wondering is if it is fowarwarded to my cell, how come it doesn't trigger my cell voice mail instead? Also is there a way to access my voice mail on my cell phone by dialing a number? I was able to "listen" to the voice mail on my phone as a recording that i downloaded, but it was cludgey and hard to hear, so I'm assuming there's an easier way...?

Also, it appears that the google voice voice mail is separate from the cell phone, so i need a whole separate message? do i record it on the computer at the google voice prompt in google or what? I mean, that is what it looks like I need to do, but again, looking to see if I'm making this more complicated.

Thanks in advance.

ETA: i have a samsung vibrant so if there's an app for google voice ...?

I believe if you set it up online, you provided a pin number. If you call that number from your cell, it should operate like your cell phone voicemail system does, just a little bit different. The general idea is the same though. Call it, put in your pin number. Options to delete, etc, and to record your message.

It's been over a week, so I figure you've already done it, but you set all your outgoing google voice messages up via your computer. When you want to record a new message, google will actually call your phone and you'll record it that way. There is a default (you can listen via your computer).

One neat feature: you can set individual outgoing messages to your contacts... so for my friends, I record personal greetings to them (usually about slapping the donut out of their fat face or other such personal nonsense).

That is pretty cool. I've actually been on vacation so i haven't fooled with it yet but i will when i get home. I downloaded the app on my phone and currently have GV forwarding to my droid.

Google Voice for the iPhone has finally been approved and is available free right now in iTunes.

My questions are these:

1. Will calls placed via the GV app count against my AT&T calling plan?
2. Will calls placed via the GV internationally cost less than adding one of the AT&T global plans? Specifically, my wife and daughter are going to Italy and Greece next summer. She and I each have iPhones. If she uses GV on her iPhone to call me, will the calls be free?

1) I believe the GV calls will go against your data plan, not your minutes plan
2) Your wife will still be paying for global (or roaming) data when she is abroad. Unless she can shut down the "phone" portion of phone (put it in airplane mode) and only use wifi, she'll be paying for her data at a higher rate than US-based.

1) Nope, calls are still placed using voice minutes, it just uses special dialing numbers to change caller-id numbers. You'll actually be charged the minutes for same-carrier calls that you normally wouldn't because the caller-ID doesn't register as a carrier specific phone.

2) I'm not sure how international works via the phone apps.

EDIT: Go by Manny25's answer in the iPhone thread. His is more detailed.

Thanks. I completely misunderstood how it worked then. Besides a new number, what's the benefit then?

There's two ways to use google voice... with the number google will give you (which you'll have to hand out to all your contacts), or keep the number you have now and use google voice as an enhanced voicemail service.

Here's a table that shows the benefits of both options, and using your current number doesn't give you much compared to using a gv number:
http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?answer=164819

I use it for the voicemail options (custom outgoing messages for my contacts, transcripts of voicemail messages, and the ability to archive the recordings) and find it much easier than my carrier's voicemail service.

Thanks. I use Ribbit for my work cell phone for the transcriptions and online archive of voicemails. I could see moving to GV full time for my personal, but would rather not switch numbers

All I want for Christmas is $%^&ing number portability. I've had the same mobile number forever, and I want it to be my GV number, so people can always reach me, regardless of phone. I've been patiently waiting since April, 2008, when they announced it was "coming soon".

Does anyone know if there's a way to block numbers calling into your google voice number? I have a RI number I use on my resumes when I'm applying for jobs in RI (I've had it years) and somehow CVS has it in their automated system for someone who takes entirely too much medicine and every time they have a refill for this person I get 8 telephone calls with endless automated stupid messages. I have tried calling that CVS and telling them it is my number, not some schlub with diabetes who lives in Nort Providence, but they claim not to have any way of searching their system for clients with that number.  I would really like them to stop calling me.

Thanks, i should have given more info. I port my google voice number over to my regular cell number, so while i have been able to block the number from ringing through to my phone, i still get a google voice message sent to my  phone as well as an insanely garbled message sent to me in a series of text messages.... I am not sure that the instructions above would address that, although I will try to block the caller from my google voice dashboard thingy.

  • Block the caller: The caller will hear a 'Number not in service' message when calling your Google number. None of your phones will ring. The call will be marked as 'Blocked' under 'History' and 'Missed.'
