Only for Celtics fans. I don't know much about Tatum, but he's a nobody outside of hardcore hoopheads who root for Boston.
The question was about Boston.

Someone is top dog--if not him, who? The other potential contender is now playing for the Dodgers.

I have a few thoughts about this and I feel the need to put them down here, both to contribute to the discussion and for posterity’s sake.

Tom, I know you will never read this but I still need to say it. Thank you. Thank you for providing me with some of the happiest moments of my life. I , along with every other Patriots fan, consider it the ultimate privilege to have been able to root for you and watch all that you’ve accomplished during your incredible career with the Patriots. Those memories are something that I will cherish for as long as I live. I wish you the absolute best of luck with whatever you choose to do next.

As far my feelings towards his departure go? I’m actually okay with it. I wanted Tom to come back to make a few more runs at it, but I’m also excited for what the future holds. Starting new with a fresh face at quarterback is fun to consider. I also think it’ll be really cool to see what Tom does in another uniform and I’m excited to watch him play wherever he decides to sign. I feel this way because we’ve already been so spoiled over these last two decades that I feel as though his legacy in New England, while I would’ve loved to see him add to it, is complete. A winning record every year, winning the division every year he was the starter except for one, 3 MVPs, 9 trips to the Super Bowl, and 6 rings. I don’t think there’s anything left undone so I’m ready for this new era of football without having to consider any what ifs or yeah buts. I hope Tom lights it up while Bill and the crew get to work on Dynasty: Part II.
Like!!!!

Guys, I was joking. I just think Green Teamers have warped idea of the distance between the popularity of the Celtics and Bruins IN BOSTON.

I don't care how many jerseys he sells or how much face time Bergeron gets on ESPN (I mean, does anyone??) to call him a "nobody' IN BOSTON is ridiculous. I also could not care less about who is the "top dog" of Boston sports.

:Football journey" is at least a little ambiguous. With the crazy money Tony Romo just got, maybe there's a broadcasting job out there for Brady right now. However, he's always said he wanted to play until age 45, and Brady will be coveted as a broadcaster whenever he stops playing.

I wonder if Brady is seriously considering retirement as an option----it is certainly possible he has a deal in hand and is just waiting a day or two to announce it. But I think it cannot be ruled out that he looked at Pats situation...what they'd pay, length of agreement, what they'd commit to around other players to add, etc. and decided it was time to move on and draw a clean line; that's especially true since (I would guess) Pats gave him a deadline given free agency timing implications. And he might look at, say, the Chargers or Dolphins and say that he doesn't want to rebuild from zero and he'd rather enjoy his family. I don't know that he is certain yet abotu that part.

Re-read my post. I never said he was a nobody IN BOSTON. I said he was a nobody outside of hockey and Boston. If you disagree, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Either way, he's not the next king of Boston sports. I don't think anyone disagrees there. I'll anoint Chara for a year or so gladly so Tatum can be ready when he takes over (assuming the Celtics keep him around too).

I'm a diehard Sox fan, and only passively follow the Pats but respect all they've done in a hard cap sport.

But really, i'm thinking they really think he's done and lowballed him, Giselle wants out, or Tom is dumb as a rock.

There is literally no other situation to equate it to when you are the greatest of all time,

why in holy hell hell do you screw with a legacy as successful and deep as this?

Really, this is like if Yaz left, except worse because of, you know, 6 titles to no titles, but Yaz was my guy, so.....

We need a Prediction thread now. How long does he play after the Pats?

My vote is he gets hurt within the first 4 games of his new teams games and is either done or never the same,
and the legacy becomes that sad, too prideful to hang it up type of thing instead of what it could have been.

The Bucs will be really good with him. Really good.

Danny Amendola signed for what -- like 5 million? Those guys are pretty easy to find. Get creative with Godwin and send Evans deep and Brady is going to have a field day and pick teams apart.

So..if you take away the sport that he plays and the city he plays in..he's a nobody? I'm not sure I understand what you mean.. because if we're still talking about Bergeron he's one of the most complete players in his sport.

edit: now ESPN not hyping hockey at all and making it far more difficult to find scores on their site/app/broadcasts.. probably has something to do hockey not getting the recognition it deserves

Tamper would be tolerable for me. Seeing him twice a year for the Fins, a team I have always hated, would have been impossibly sucky. The Bucs just seems kind of ridiculous. Like Jordan on the Wizards, Mays on the Mets and other things that really should not have happened.

Here's to Cowherd being right. It's not a frequent occurrence but dare to dream.

Tampa also comes to Gillette in 2021. What a scene that would be...

Fair. I interpreted the question as both being who would be the most popular mainstream athlete from a Boston team AND who is the most popular athlete on a Boston team within Boston.

Bergeron would make a top 10, probably top 5, but I don't think he's the face of the Bruins (Chara, Rask, or Pastrnak all have dibs before him and some even had McAvoy on that list a year ago, though not because any is more complete, but because they are just more talked-about) and therefore cannot be the face of Boston sports. I like Bergeron a lot and would put him up there as one of the best Bruins players in the last 50 years or more, but he's always under the radar and that hurts his "candidacy" if you will. The "face of the franchise" guys tend to be a little more visible and vocal. That's a bit unusual for the Bruins because none of their players have ever gotten a lot of mic time by comparison, but I still think it's Chara or Rask or the hotshot goalscorer if you have to pick a player to be the face of the Bruins and nominee for new face of Boston sports.

yeah, that's what Cowherd is claiming in any case. https://www.complex.com/sports/2020/03/tom-brady-leaving-new-england-patriots?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sportstw&utm_source=twitter.com

UPDATED 3/17, 2:00 p.m. ET: Colin Cowherd is reporting that according to his unnamed source, Tom Brady will sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.

"I was told 35 minutes ago that Tom Brady signs tomorrow with Tampa Bay," Cowherd said on Tuesday. "He had made a decision and talked to Tampa Bay yesterday. He was willing to re-sign with New England but he watched Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins go to other franchises and then called Robert Kraft an hour and a half later and says ‘I’M OUT’… I am told Tampa is the choice and he will sign tomorrow... This is not a 'football source', it is a ‘Icon’ source, and somebody in Tom’s stratosphere that knows Tom and who is a famous person. He says Tampa."

Cowherd specified that his source is not a "football source," but one of "wealth and celebrity, connected to sports."

I think its an oversimplification to just say, ”Well, 30 mill per season, of COURSE they weren’t going to match that!” I’m not convinced it would’ve taken that much or nearly that much had they treated him better last off season. Obviously, it’s all just conjecture, but maybe both sides would’ve been nudged toward middle ground if there had a been a what TB perceived to be a heartfelt effort to make him feel wanted PRIOR to this off-season. A three year deal worth, say, 70-ish guaranteed AND a “we really want you to retire a patriot, we believe youve got a lot left in the tank, blah blah blah...”

That kind of finesse-y sentimentality of course generates eye rolls from many here, there and everywhere, but it seems plausible that the whole package - the long term extension, the courting, the belief in him - would have an impact on Brady. Because from what we’re reading, it sure doesn’t seem like he felt wanted. Oh well. Stidham it is! (I hope.)

Isn't the poll in the OP 100% unanswerable at this point/ I don't think any of us have any real picture of why Brady is leaving. Maybe it's money, maybe it isn't. Maybe it's Bill, maybe not. Maybe it's something else altogether. But we don't know. We're listening to rumors and trying to read between the lines but we just don't know.
Ouch ... I know you're upset but you're really taking the forum out of discussion forum here ...

It's almost worth its own thread. Gronk and Papi are retired; Betts is gone; and Kyrie has thankfully brought his decline phase to Brooklyn. So, the top 10 most popular Boston sports celebrities, in no particular order:

Tatum
Kemba
Chara
Bergeron
Rask
Edelman
D-Mac
Hightower
Bogaerts
Devers

With honorable mentions to Sale (if he gets healthy), Gilmore, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Pasta (who could be interchanged w/ Rask), Marchand (ditto). But there is no Top 10 list that doesn't have Bergeron, and probably no Top 5 list either. He and Chara are right now the 2 automatic Hall of Famers for their respective sport that are in that list, although Kemba is probably close given that the B-Ball HoF is relatively easier to join.

Shit, I forgot Marchand (not sure how), but he has to be up there. Kemba is a good call too, though his leg injury (prior to the suspension of the season) was beginning to feel like shades of Hayward's issues, albeit much different circumstances.

I feel like the Sox are a little under-represented there. Pedroia is still part of the team, technically, and never lost popularity, but he's kind of off to the side. But aside from Devers and Bogaerts, I feel like JDM and E-Rod deserve a little more love. A year ago, Sale would have been at or near the top of the list of Sox players.

Hightower being on this list feels like a bit of a reach. Maybe if he was in a Police Academy movie.

Cowherd is an idiot, but I definitely think Brady saw those guys going elsewhere & realized he wasn’t getting any help again & decided to leave.

From a football standpoint he will get to play with 2 of the ten best WRs in the game vs Meyers & Sanu.
That didn't work out so well this last season for him and, even if he was injured, he was arguably the reason that Brady's last ever play was a pix-6 to Logan fucking Ryan.

I still think he's holding out to see if someone signs AB because he's made it clear time and again he wants to throw to him.

I can't imagine Brady wanting to play behind that offensive line. I don't care what PFF says, they are AWFUL in pass protection. I watched a ton of Bucs games last year and they were a sieve much of the season.

Edit:

I'm sure you'll be missed. If you were on those metal bleachers in the freezing cold then you have no reason to bitch after experiencing all that we have over the last 20 years.
No bitching, just an emotional reaction that will subside of course. It just fucking sucks.

NGL, as a Tampa resident, this is absolutely the 2nd best outcome. People are MAD for the Bucs here. Every first 1/4 - 1/2 the season, home games sell well because of hope. The next 2-3 games usually sell well because the weather gets cooler and nice. And finally by the end of the season, people are giving away tix and the tailgate is the real draw. All that said, you see more Bucs gear around than the Rays without a doubt, and while the Bolts have created a great following here, Football is still King in the South and the Bucs are about to blow away the Bolts short of a (delayed) Cup run.

He's going to be holding out a LONG time then.
Is he not a free agent able to sign anywhere? From what I recall, the league basically chose to take no action against him and everything kind of blew over pending some off-field incidents that don't seem like they're going to result in any sort of jail time.

He still may be a cancer no one wants, but if you're a team hoping to bring in Tom Brady and you're one Antonio Brown away, isn't it a no-brainer? Even if you cut him in camp, you still get Brady (though he may be pissed about it if you do cut Brown).

No, it's not a no-brainer at all. I think it's incredibly unlikely that anyone will sign him.

The first paragraph is not quite accurate. The NFL is taking no action because Brown is a free agent. However, the civil trial for sexual assault is still proceeding, and the fact remains he sent someone threatening text messages after an unflattering news article came out. Not sure why everyone forgets that it was the latter incident that got Brown kicked off the team.

The league could still put Brown on the exempt list pending the civil trial, or could suspend him for some games for the text messages alone.
