Cross-posting from the Barca thread:
On a related note, I've come around to trying Portuguese Rs as the correct Hs. It's a tough transition, as so many of the modern Brazilian legends feature Rs (Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho), but it's at least doable for current players (Richarlison, Raphinha).
I assume this is all Portuguese, but is there a pronunciation split among Portuguese-speaking peoples??
The other tough one that immediately comes to mind is the German/Turkish 'G' (as in Gundogan, being pronounced Goon-doe-wan, at least as I understand it).
I watched a Barca documentary recently and they interviewed a Dutch player/coach, I wanna say either Koeman or Van Gaal (pronounced Van-haal BTW) and his pronunciation of Cruyff was utterly baffling to me (best written out as 'craowf').
So then, my fellow 'Gazzans (gotta work on that one!), what other pronunciations in world football need correcting??
The only one I can give much authority on is former keeper Wily Caballero (in Argentina, 'll' is pronounced like 'zh' or 'sh'). So it's 'cah-bah-
zheh-roh', not 'cah-bah-
yeh-roh'. Very confusingly, Villarreal keeper Geronimo Rulli is pronounced 'roo-
lee'. He has dual citizenship with Argentina and Italy though, so maybe it's an Italian thing?
