That could be great or terrible. I’ll watch regardless.

Probably the best player I saw who did not consistently receive support from his managers. He carried that Italian team by their ears to the World Cup final. Even at the very end of his career, he was still a very productive attacker.

Nice tribute to the late Frank Worthington here:
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/mar/23/entertainment-was-all-for-frank-worthington-on-the-pitch-and-off-it

Worthington, whose death after a long illness was announced on Tuesday, was 30, at the third of what by the time he finally gave up ran to 24 clubs, and on his way to winning the First Division golden boot. But his was a particular kind of genius, the kind that still has people purring well over five decades after he made his first-team debut at 18, but that brought him no major trophies and only eight England caps.
Not Bill Murray on SNL, but Frank Worthington. They just don't make them like this anymore:

Worthington’s combination of charisma and flamboyance was entirely foreign to them both. “I suppose there is something a little showbiz about the way I play,” he said. “Entertainment, live bands, theatre, cabaret, are a big part of my life. I like to be entertained and I like to entertain.”
It was during a game for Leicester against Revie’s Leeds that Worthington found himself on the ball near the corner flag with Johnny Giles at his back, penned in with nowhere to go, so flicked it over both his head and his marker’s, spun and passed to a teammate. “If you ever take the piss out of me or Leeds United again, I’ll break your legs,” Giles growled.
He moved to Leicester instead, and his attempt to “settle down a bit” involved spending the following summer on holiday in Mallorca with George Best (the mind boggles), where he met the former Miss Sweden Birgitta Egermalm. By the time he returned she was pregnant and soon they were engaged, leading to a first attempt at domestic life that was so unsuccessful Leicester eventually paid to move him out of the family home and into a hotel.

“Sometimes my life’s been so full that it’s left me physically and emotionally exhausted,” Worthington told the Mirror in 1978. “But if I should drop down dead this minute no one could say I haven’t squeezed the maximum from my life. I’ve got no regrets about anything. After all, we’re only on this earth for a while.”

The Bundesliga stretch run will involve Gladbach's lame duck manager playing out the string before heading to BvB, Eintracht Frankfurt's lame duck manager playing out the string before going to Gladbach, and now probably RBL's lame duck manager playing out the string before going to Bayern. Oh, and Bayern winning its ninth league title in a row. Stupid league.

Schalke clinched relegation for the first time in 33 years, losing 1-0 to Arminia Bielefeld.

They have 13 points through 30 games. Oof.

River Plate is about to play Independiente Santa Fe in the Copa Libertadores. Due to a COVID outbreak, they only have ten field players available. They are starting a semi-injured midfielder at GK because they think his hamstring injury isn't bad enough to prevent him from playing that position.

CONMEBOL denied their request to register a couple of reserve team goalkeepers.

Everyone please take the time to go watch this. It's exceptional content. I only wish the Curb intro theme was used instead.

I think it was 2-1, but that's besides the point. At one moment I believe River were only going to be able to field 10 to start, but I think they eventually got to 11 (no subs) when Perez went to goal.

There was a story I read years ago written but a guy who I think was in the Barcelona development system. He talked about what it’s like having your childhood in that kind of environment. There was even a funny mention about 8 year-olds trying to make their hair look like their idols. If I remember right, the author was not a Barcelona level prospect in the end, but ended up getting a full scholarship to University of Delaware(?) to play. Does anyone know the article I’m talking about?

This seems problematic:

The Premier League have released a statement in regards to next momth’s international fixtures as clubs will not be releasing the players.

Argentina, along with Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia will be without their Premier League based players for September’s World Cup qualifiers. The league released a statement on Tuesday mentioning that a unanimous decision has been taken “not to release players for international matches in red-list countries next month.”

For Argentina, that means no Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero, Gio Lo Celso and Emiliano Buendia as all four play in England. For the likes of Brazil, it means no Alisson, Ederson, Thiago Silva, Fabinho, Fred, Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison, Firmino and Raphina.

Liverpool is not releasing Salah because Egypt is also on the red list.

This could be interesting to watch as we get closer to the ACN.

and contract extension talks for Salah. LFC also held him back from the Olympics, which he seemed ok with. But the man loves representing his country, so some friction here is possible.

Paolo Maldini's kid Daniel got his first goal for AC Milan today, making him the 3rd generation of the Maldini family to score for the club.

Combining with the post above yours, a solution suggests itself.

I confess to not knowing what most football academies look like, but it looks like Crystal Palace have gotten a beautiful facility for their £25 million (if memory serves) investment in theirs.

Hopefully this can be a factor in attracting new recruits.
