Girardi can shut the fuck up. Jeter's hands were almost over the plate when he got hit. If hitters want to hang out over the plate, they are going to get hit. I don't like intentionally plunking batters, but throwing inside when they are getting too comfortable leaning out into the strike zone is not only fine, but necessary. I don't like the Rays any more than you, but Jeter holds a fair share of the blame for getting hit there.

Oh please. It isn't just about Jeter. Five guys have gotten hit in the last four games with those clowns. Headley got sent to the hospital. Girardi has every right to be pissed. He should be.

Yeah, I agree with this. Girardi's larger point is not that you can't throw inside, it's that if you're going to do it, you should at least have a little bit of control, otherwise you end up just plunking people - which is precisely what the Rays have been doing, and not just to the yankees. I have to say the one that keeps coming up as a bit of a douche is Maddon, encouraging that type of nonsense.

Girardi can go jump in a lake. Since he took over the Yankees in 2008, the Yankees are 7th in HBP. Perhaps he should instruct his pitchers on how to command the inner half of the plate.

(Over the same period the Red Sox are 2nd but that spans 3 managers and none of them have come demanded other teams "pitch the right way.")

EDIT: And since this seems to be about the big bad Rays, they are 20th over that span.

Tampa has called up five pitchers from its Triple A farm team this month. Maddon loves the flexibility that gives him in September, even when he's 17 games out of first place with two weeks to play. He has been mixing and matching in late innings all month. Which is fine, except some of these inexperienced pitchers have command issues, as Headley pointed out after last night's game. Batters get hit, I understand that. But when bullpens are filled with hard-throwing prospects from AAA ball who might not have the experience and composure yet to deal with big league hitters, well, that's the issue to me, anyway.

It's really not much different than spring training when big league hitters are reluctant to face some hard-throwing minor leaguer they have never seen before.

To clarify for rembrat, 20th means 20th in pitchers hitting batters. This year the Rays are 12th and the Yankees are 5th.  On the other side of the coin the Yankees are 12th in the majors in getting hit this year, and are 3rd since the start of 2008.

They hang out over the plate. They get hit. Get over it.

And I didn't argue it was all about Jeter, I said he shares in the blame for that particular HBP.

Edit: Clarity.

I completely understand why Girardi was furious last night.  The Rays' pitchers were wild all series and hit a bunch of Yankee hitters while the Yankees had a man thrown out for coming inside after the warning was issued.  I'd have lost my cool if I were the manager.

Of course the one guy he doesn't have a case about is Jeter.  He's been diving at the plate for close to 20 years now and as a result he gets hit a lot despite the fact that no one throws at him.

This is just one douche calling out another douche.  Tampa may be in the wrong here but Girardi doesn't have much credibility when it comes to this issue.  So yeah, he should just shut up.

To be more accurate, I think the dispute (pitchers not knowing what they're doing...)  was more about losing control high and inside versus just inside.

I agree with that. Baseball's dangerous enough without scrubs showing off their speed without enough control to avoid a guy's head...particularly in meaningless games managed by a douchenozzle.

This year, Yankees pitchers have hit 8 Rays batters, while Rays pitchers have hit 7 Yankee batters.

Girardi has no leg to stand on.
