Are teams aware that they can say no to Cashman?

Miami: Look, you're getting a 59 HR mvp. You're going to have to give us at least Chance Adams. I mean, a nice prospect but this isn't Severino, Brian.

Cashman: Nope, sorry.

Miami: OK fine, we'll take your 7th best prospect for Stanton.

Funny that if the Punto trade never happened and so the Dodgers didn't have the last year of A-Gon's dead money on their books ($22M), Stanton might be a Dodger now.

OK, not everyone here might find that funny.

If the Punto trade had never happened, Shane Victorino and Mike Napoli aren't on the 2013 Red Sox, so I'm good with the trade, and I think most Sox fans are.

Wow, that was not a good conference for Miami.

GS called it a circus down there. Talked about his conversation with Jeter. Really threw them under the bus. I imagine it's going to be really difficult for Miami for a couple of years after this trade, even just signing name brand players.

Also, I've never heard Hal do a full interview before with Q&A but holy shit does he sound like his father. If you can watch the Q&A with YES, it was pretty good for both Stanton & Hal.

When Stanton made remarks about the circus, the different direction every spring, it made me look things up, and jesus $%^ing christ, the Marlins have had SEVEN different managers during Stanton's time in Miami. EIGHT during Girardi's time with the Yankees.

I listened to an interview with Hal on the radio just after Boone was hired and I was quite impressed. He was contrite and humble, but still direct and honest and did not try to sugar coat things. When asked if Boone was a unanimous choice he made it clear he was not, but that he implicitly trusted his top people who made the call.

Is that brutally honest? I think it's kind; I'm not sure the Giants are even approaching the hump.

He wants to win now. He wants to join a team capable winning even without him. Nothing wrong with saying that, and I think it actually looks pretty good.

What was Jeter going to do? Take whiteout to the opt-out section of his contract if he didn’t accept the Giants/Cardinals trades?

Yeah, that seems to be the only issue with this story. How could they threaten "Marlin for life" when he has an opt-out in three years? I mean, maybe they really tried that, but that's a pretty transparent bluff. If that's true, it's not a good look.

Rebuild the team with Stanton still on it and see if he changes his mind when they are 12 games out on Memorial Day. Do you think he was going to wait three more years in that scenario?

And what happens if he can't replicate the deal ended up getting with the Yankees, and STL and SF are no longer interested?

Did you miss the times they threatened to tear down the team around him and that it literally just came out that they threatened he’d be a Marlin for life if he didn’t accept the trade to either San Fran or St. Louis which is what I’m referring to? It’s a terrible bluff makes no sense at all when he has an opt out.

I didn't miss it. I just think he would have caved if they went through with it. Instead they blinked within 48 hours.

I just want to add he reminded me of Dwayne The Rock Johnson during his interview on MLBN.
That was probably somewhat because they also showed Didi's tweet asking if he'll still hit 4th, which featured a gif of The Rock. You were subconsciously influenced.

The issue is that they have an opportunity right now to dump his entire salary, so they took it. Sure, STL and SF had better offers, but if they call his bluff and he relents mid season, its more than likely STL and SF will have moved on and no longer be in a position to make it happen.

Waiting until next season might be an option, but it also means spending another $25M on him this season, and I doubt the haul would have been significantly better even if they decided to risk it.

Their threat was empty and Stanton knew it.

Stanton didn't poopoo Jeter so much as he said he didn't think the Marlins were far off from competing. His real criticisms were of the organization itself and he just sounded like someone who was fed up playing for an organization that is constantly in flux.

I agree. That's why I think if they simply said "OK" and went on with the rest of their offseason, he would have softened his stance in early February. Worst case scenario, they get the same deal they just got form NYY.

By early February the Yankees may have added more salary, perhaps for a pitcher, making the same trade impossible. There was nothing else they could really have done given their goals, so the threat was completely hollow.

And it's their goals we should be ripping apart, not how they executed this. Instead of paying some of Stanton's salary and getting back legit prospects for a rebuild, they sought a straight salary dump.

Oh, and I applaud the mod who forced an avatar for me for at least trying to match it to my username, but I hate the original Star Trek!

No they are not; they shit their pants when that coconut head approaches them wanting to make a trade.

MLB is to the MFY's what the 2001 Odyssey was to Tony Manero; any woman he wanted/any player they want, he/they get(s).

It's that simple; the sooner we all realize that, the better off we'll all be.

One WS title in 17 years is unacceptable to these gluttons, get out of their entitled way everyone.

Wow.

The backstory of the Giancarlo Stanton trade is bonkers. Miami threatened that if he didn’t accept a trade to St. Louis or San Francisco, he would be a Marlin for life. He called their bluff. And because of it, he’s a New York Yankee.

It really wasn't totally empty if they wanted to be spiteful. They could have dealt Bour, Ozuna, Yelich, Realmuto, etc. and left the team as Stanton and 24 pre-arb guys. And then trade the guys as they come to arb. That would have been brutal.

It's really shitty that fans weren't interested in seeing that offense last year. They really had strong offense and probably were only a couple starters away from competing.

But to what end? They had an offer from the Yankees, a team on his list, and didn't ultimately care about the return: they wanted to shed the contract. Even if they did as you say to try to spite him and convince him to accept a better trade somewhere else, there's no guarantee that a team agrees to the kind of deal the Yankees offered (i.e.: taking on the bulk of the contract). In fact there's every reason to believe that if they waited, there would be fewer takers.

To put it concisely: now was the time to make this deal. The longer they wait, the less flexibility teams likely have until next offseason.

The only way to salvage this deal that I can see, for the Marlins, is to wait until the deadline and hope Castro is raking, and flip him to a contender in need for a few highly regarded prospects.

How popular are the #Yankees these days with the acquisition of Giancarlo Stanton? They have already sold about 550,000 more tickets than a year ago at this time
Red Sox ticket sales are down 6% versus last year at this time. If that holds up that equates to roughly 160,000 tickets. A 700,000 ticket swing at a conservative $50 per ticket is $35m. It’s likely more than that

This is something I bet Scott Boras is very aware of. There probably isn't clear math but I bet Boras is making the argument that the longer teams wait to sign FAs, the less season ticket holders are enticed to renew.

I'm only one example but when we traded for Stanton, I immediately purchased season tickets in left field.

I think they were always going to sell more seats this year just because of how exciting they were last year, but Stanton certainly doesn't hurt.

That said I'm going to see them play in Anaheim in April and I wouldn't be doing that without Stanton on the team.

Yeah, that was my first thought too, they went 6-0 at home in the postseason too in the midst of what by all reports was easily the best atmosphere that the new Yankee Stadium has seen. Stanton doesn't hurt, though. :)

I hate the Yankees and I’m definitely going to go to more games this year than I have in the past. The team is fun. Stanton will make it even more fun. The stadium was absolutely rocking in the playoffs. Totally different atmosphere than any game I had been at there previously. I’m circling April 4 to go watch the Rays be ritually sacrificed on the altar of the giant home run gods.

Angels single game seats went on sale about 90 minutes ago and the two Yankees games I'm going to are nearly sold out already. Whoo boy, did I just spend a pretty penny to not even sit all that close. But at least I'm in!

I haven’t gone in a few years but will definitely change that once Torres and Andujar are up, crazy potential lineup if everyone is healthy.

Revisiting this from a Sox fan's perspective. For those who thought Jay Groome was too high a price or that Guzman as the centerpiece was low value, now that we have the major outlets publishing their top 100 lists, it's interesting to see where Groome ranks relative to Guzman.

BA: Groome 82, Guzman 87
Fangraphs: Groome 98, Guzman 67
BP: Groome 78, Guzman NR
Law: Groome 30, Guzman NR
MLB: Groome 85, Guzman NR

There's at least an argument to be made that Groome as the top prospect in a Stanton trade would have been fair, even with the money being the same. Obviously the other pieces are more complicated, but I thought it was interesting to see two of the publications with Guzman listed and Fangraphs in particular, having him that much higher than Groome.
