Does this take the Yankees out of the Harper sweepstakes next year? Or are they going to put these two studs next to each other?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not getting too upset about NY trading for a guy who's missed as much time as Stanton has and will make about 30m per year until he's 38. If he was a FA and Boston signed him today for 10/300 would we be happy?
Sure. But what about 10/222? Because that's what their CBT number is.

Stanton has only missed significant time because of two freak injuries. Facial fractures from a HBP and a broken wrist on a swing. Other than that, it’s been the occasional hamstring pull or sore back.

Defensively, the Red Sox are tremendous.
The outfield and catching are. As for the infield: Bogaerts is OK. Devers might be good but made a TON of errors last season, and they'll open the season with the adequate-at-best Marco Hernandez at second and TBA at first.

And neither team made the World Series. You expect them to reach that total again this year?

Yankees were 1 game away, and Sox were pretty good too, if I recall.

This ain't the old days of 'keep the line moving', it's a 'smash the ball or die tryin' league now

Stanton in LF, Judge in RF, Harper in CF, no?
I know Jon will likely pooh-pooh this notion, but really, the Yankees could still go get Harper, especially if he wants to go there. Yes it would be a very expensive team, but since when have the Yankees been afraid of spending money? They've got so many good players coming up through the pipeline that they could transition away from guys that start costing money (like Gardner, Headley, Ellsbury, and even some of their more expensive pitching) and either use the kids to fill in the gaps or use them to trade for dynamic young talent. Let's face it - the Yankees are in incredible shape at the moment.

McKinney and Cave are 7th and 8th on the OF depth chart now, so one of them could certainly go. There were rumors last night that Miguel Andujar was part of it, and hopefully that's not true because with Torres now pretty definitely at 2B, they need Andujar at 3B behind Headley.
Nah, they’ll be signing Machado to play 3B. Don’t sweat it.

I think it’s a positional issue more than a financial one as I don’t think any of those three should be playing CF, but RF/LF/DH would be possible.

And Harper is perfectly capable of playing CF occasionally.

And really, even if it's a passable OF or even slightly below average, you're gonna get 150+ homers from that group so what does it matter?

This is true.

Because he said the Sox lineup is every bit as potent as the Yankees if they acquire JDM, unless JDM hits 150 HRs next year I am not sure who that is so.
I said our TEAM would be every bit as potent. There's more to baseball than just a lineup, you know.

The other shoe in this will be how Dombrowski overreacts
Two moves that may or may not be an over-reaction.

1: Sign JD Martinez to play LF.

2: Trade Travis and one of Bradley/Benintendi for the best 1B power bat you can land - if a worthy player exists and is available. (Or a 1B upgrade with prospects or good relief help thrown in).

I wasn't hot on him at all, tbh. He turns 29 at the end of the coming season, has a career .256/.337/.535 away slashline (.261/.340/.456 in AL ballparks), has missed at least 40 games in 4 of the last 6 seasons, doesn't bring much in the way of positional versatility or speed, doesn't seem particularly interesting or likable, and is probably a juicer. Seems like a perfect Yankee, tho.

Minor league and draft comp guru’s answer me this. If Stanton was actually a free agent and he signed with the Yankees today. Wouldn’t the comp pics the Marlins would get, net better players than the ones that went back in this deal? I know its a salary dump, but I’m shocked at what is going south on this deal.

I think major league owners need to be looking at themselves in the mirror today. The Marlins were just aquired by new ownership, a group that had to be approved by the other owners. How the fuck do you approve a new ownership group that is too broke to keep it's best players? I mean, what's the point of approving the new ownership if they are going to run the team the same way the previous regimes did? I just don't understand it. I'm sure there were plenty of billionaires that would have loved the chance to own a major league team, and would have been able to eat a few losses early on to build a winner on the backs of the superstars you already have under contract.

If the rest of the MLB owners knew this was coming when they approved Jeter and his friends, then why bother keeping a fucking team there in the first place? Just get rid of them, or is having a 50 win team in South Florida that nobody cares about, hemorrhages money and acts as a doormat to the rest of the league so important that it makes sense to just bring in another group that's going to gut them, and try to make a few bucks somewhere along the way?

Do people remember David Price pitched for about a 3rd of the season last year and they got zip from their two top set up guys? Even if they do nothing, but have better health, and some bounce backs, things should improve significantly. This is also before the inevitable big move to come.

I much prefer being underdogs with the Yankees as villains and this is good for the rivalry and they will be a huge national draw.

I don't think it hurts baseball all that much unless the Yanks become a dynasty and the three other teams just say fuck it, and rebuild.

However,I do not look forward to 4 and a half hour baseball games 19 times a year with phantom DL stints and 8 pitcher bullpens. If they are worried about length of games, this isn't going to help that aspect of things.

The thing that "scares" me is that by pythagorean record the Yankees were already significantly better than the Red Sox last year and they just got way better. Obviously a lot to play out in the offseason still but any regression the Red Sox have to the HR mean, the Yankees will likely also have with respect to their bad luck in terms of winning games unless for some reason they are particularly and repeatedly "unclutch."

The worst part of this is that I really, really liked Stanton and now I just won't be able to enjoy his monster HRs

Sigh. What a shame, I also really liked Stanton, and truth be told Lurch is likeable also. Turtle and Scorpion, Yankees just cannot resist the temptation of the high priced long term contract, albeit it of a young in his prime MVP. This is NOT collusion, this is NOT illegal, in baseball terms, the Yankees did not set the salary cap, and are playing within the rules. having said that all, thank gawd the Sox won 3 Rings this century compared to the Yankees 1. It makes moments like this annoying, but not soul shattering. MY fantasy which will NEVER happen is a hard salary cap, where all teams have the same ceiling, and then sit back and see who wins, who manages their resources better, you know, like the Patriots.

Totally. What the Pats have done since 2001 given a system actively designed to stick it to winners and prevent dynasties is imho far more impressive than anything the Yankees have achieved in their history with their perennial gross financial advantage, especially over the league bottom feeders.

Ditto the Spurs of the last 20 years.

MFY start every season on third base and think they hit a triple. They're more like the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball than the Golden State Warriors of baseball.

This I 100% agree with

It makes no sense to approve an ownership group who is committed to keep a team in South Florida as a minor league program. I have no idea why anyone would buy tickets to see that team play next year.

Yes, me too, and I've been saying this for months. If a brand new ownership group is so backed into a corner financially immediately upon purchase that they have to essentially give away their best player because they can't afford his hefty contract, then they shouldn't have been approved in the first place.

I'm just going to take solace in the fact that, much as Judge had a mere 54 WRC+ against Boston this year, the Nationals managed to keep Stanton to an 86. It can be done.

So they go 9-9 against the Red Sox and 100-44 against the rest of the league. Still ends up in the same place. Bad for the Red Sox.

There's lots of risk with this Yankees team. Judge, Stanton, Severino, and Didi all had career seasons last year. Will they all repeat somewhat their health and performance?
On the other hand, they'll have Bird, Gray, Kahnle and Robertson from the start of the season, plus Torres for Castro is very likely an immediate upgrade.

And it restricts them, but the Yankees have no financial restrictions.
I mean, this was true at one point, but that was like two CBAs ago.

The reason they made this deal and the Dodgers and Cubs and Astros and Red Sox didn't is that NY's combined payroll/roster situation is in the best shape of any of them, so they could take on most of the deal which the other teams did not want to do (SF and STL did, but Stanton didn't want them).

And Sox will have Devers for a full season at 3B which is a massive upgrade from the drek they had there for most of the year. Add in Thornburg and Carson Smith for full seasons in the pen and Price in the rotation. I'd also count on better years from Betts, Benintendi, and Bogaerts. It all depends on whether DD can add a JD Martinez-type bat to round out the lineup.

Yeah, definitely, although they seem to have a bunch of injury concerns to start the season. I was just talking about the Yankees there.

Also neither NY nor BOS is done this offseason, this Stanton deal probably means that Cashman will end up making an extra trade or two.

Whoever bought Miami had to be willing to inherit $400 million in debt. Maybe Jeter and Co. were only one of a small group of investors willing to do that.

Nobody else had the money to build their own stadium to take advantage oh the CBA. They have an enormous advantage over everyone. Anyway it must be like cheering for the republican tax plan that makes the rich richer.

So, the Red Sox would also be a team benefitting from the tax plan? Confused by your analogy. Red Sox will have a higher payroll next season and could've easily afforded Stanton, he just didn't want to go to Boston.

Edit: Call Yankees fans whatever you like, except fans of the tax bill. Them's fighting words.

Will Chad Green get consideration for 5th starter?
They said he would and they wanted him to prepare for that this winter, but I don't think it makes much sense, especially assuming they resign CC. He was dominant as a starter in AAA in 2016 (1.52 ERA in 94 innings) and had one amazing start against the Blue Jays in August 2016, but he was so good in his multi-inning relief role last year and NY has guys like Adams and Sheffield chomping at the bit for their shot.

tl/dr: NY said he would, but I would be very surprised if he's not back in the same role next season.

Right, but whether or not he opts out, this potential $30M payment brings his AAV down to $22M per year as long as he in NY (3 years or 10).
