Holy shit. I had to look this up to verify that you weren't fucking with us, but it's true. It feels like a lifetime ago.
I literally rubbed my eyes to make sure I was reading it correctly.

I think if Pedro wanted to, he could be a 5th starter for someone today. The answer is Pedro every day.

Remember when they had Wake go the next day? I don't have the patience to go through the game logs, but i'd love to know Wake's record going after Pedro.

I just glanced at the 1998 game logs (Pedro's first year). Each pitcher made 33 starts. 31 of Wake's starts were immediately following a Pedro start, 20 of which were against the same team. I don't have the time to go game by game to figure out Wake's stats, but suffice to say that in those 20 games with a common opponent, the team was 11-9 in Wake's games (12-8 in Pedro's games). I bet hitters hated going from seeing Pedro to Wake, but it didn't really make that much of a difference for the team's fortunes.

I agree that Pedro is the answer.

However, this topic got me thinking of players like: Andre Dawson, Tony Pena, Tom Seaver, Tony Perez, Lee Smith, Jack Clark, The Eck, Rickey Henderson, John Smoltz, etc. Which got me wondering if the player in question had to have their best years with the Red Sox, or if it could be based on their entire career. Still doesn't change my answer. Pedro still gets my vote.

We were just about to spend $600+MM on a guy whose best full season is a steaming pile of shit next to Yaz' 1967.

That said (and I am in the running for the biggest Yaz fan out there), for THIS roster, I'm going with Manny*.

*Non-Pedro division. In fact, Pedro shouldn't even be eligible. It's like having a thread on the best Patriot or Chicago Bull of all time.

Edit: Fun fact: From 1962 through 1978 Yaz had 12 top-20 MVP seasons. Over that 17-season stretch, he was top-20 71% of the time, and top-10 24% of the time. HOF'er that he is, he is still underrated, imo.

Yaz's career through age 25 was a steaming pile of shit next to Soto's, just saying.
