I don't think you 10-day a guy for half assing it a few times. I mean, sure, sit him for 2 in a row, but a full DL? I have to think his groin may actually be re-injured. I mean, I do not like him even a little bit, but stuff like last night happens. He brain farted twice, it cost them twice, he looks like a fool, but they need his bat if they plan to win this year; I cannot imagine the MFY forcing a DL trip to make an example of him.

In your excitement for NYY drama, you guys are making shitty posts. The Yankees want more than anything to have a productive Gary Sanchez in their lineup. They are not putting him on the DL to sit on his ass and reflect on two plays he screwed up.

It may come off as a "shitty post" to you, but he was cleared by medical personnel to play right? Obviously they wouldn't put him out on the field if he faced significant risk of re-injury. I'm not going to sit here and say he is 100% because he probably isn't but he was feeling good enough to play and cleared by the training staff. It looks to me like they are using a tweak to his injury to get him away from the game to get healthier, work on his struggling swing, but to also to sit back and reflect for a bit on what he did.

I mean...the drama would have come if Boone had actually benched him IMO. He specifically AVOIDED the drama by doing this.

They are doing the 10 day DL to give him 10 more days to make 150% sure that his shit is right, with an ultimatum that he absolutely better use that shit when he is back. And they are going to give him one last PR lifeboat in the process.

Yes. I do believe they are ok losing his mighty .188 bat in exchange for that in the hopes that his body and mind come back ready for the home stretch on the other side.

Sure, the Red Sox would never put, say, Pedroia out there if there was the slightest chance he wasn't completely over his prior problem.

The Yankees are usually pretty transparent about these things so I'm sure we will get more details in the next few days. I think there is a gray area between 'sore' and 'slightly tweaked', which is probably where some of the confusion is occurring. I actually think that RedOctober's last post is probably pretty close to reality, but who knows.

Via interpreter, Gary Sanchez felt right groin "grab'' during 1st inn. passed ball play last nite, but left ballpark not thinking he'd be DL candidate. MRI this a.m. showed same strain, though he feels it's less tight than previous injury. Repeated it was no excuse for non-hustle

It’s not us. This was the number one story on every national radio show. I think that if he had looked hobbled, gimpy, had pulled up or had grimaced people would be less skeptical.

On the run to first, what looks really bad was that he sped up when he saw the play at second.

The passed ball was weird though. He looked as if he needed to figure out how to run, so maybe there’s something physical that slows his accelerator

Or maybe he has running yips

What am I missing? Guys come back and get reinjured all the time.

I mean, one has played 2b for the Sox for a decade and it happened way back earlier this year.

Couldn't he have been healthy and then got hurt in the game last night?

I don't love Sanchez either but I have a tough time believing he just didn't run hard because he's lazy. Has he done that before? It didn't look good but if it grabbed him that stuff can happen unconsciously.

I can recall several instances earlier this year where Sanchez beat DP relays to first and thinking he is faster than I thought. And that he runs hard. Outside of the Detroit fracas last season, he has been a good citizen, on and off the field.
After two full years in the big leagues, Gary still requires a translator. Sanchez is like many of our Latino players, a bit misunderstood at times and in need of some patience from fans. I can only imagine what it's like to blow a game, let down your teammates, and then see the Internet turn against you.

1. Gary assumed a Wild pitch would lead to one base taken by the baserunner.
2. Gary absolutely ripped the ball in the 9th (the 2nd hardest hit ball of the game) RIGHT at the shifted infielder. So he felt snakebitten and assumed it was a flip to 2nd. Hicks hustle and immediate sprint on contact beating the tag at 2nd base made Gary look even worse.

Gary did not take "game situation" into account.
-Fast/aggressive runners take 2 bags on long, wild pitches.
-Shifted infields lead to out of position players and runners on base leave on contact with 2 outs.

So you have a big hitting catcher that doesn't think about game situations. No wonder he drove Joe Girardi nuts. Joe was the complete inverse.

It looked to me like he hurt himself on the passed ball and that's why he was lumbering slowly (and assuming the baserunner wouldn't take two bases). Then what benhogan said above on #2. He was probably holding back running because he assumed that they would get the out at 2nd and didn't want to chance aggravating the injury further.

Returned to play September 1 and has started all 5 games since then - he is 3 for 18 since his return with a HR, and of course, some controversial passed balls...

Needs to get to work on that .186 batting average lest he get passed by the "hot" Chris Davis...

Yanks name Sanchez WC game starter already.....I would start Romine unless Sanchez hits the cover off the ball the next few days. He is lost both offensively and defensively. If Gregorius does not play, the infield defense is really, really lacking.....They are going to need to show up with the bats......

Romine is just as bad offensively (as Sanchez currently) with no upside, his throwing arm is decidedly worse, and NY pitchers seem to be just fine throwing to Sanchez (two hits allowed in nine innings last night from eight pitchers), Sonny Gray excluded but with any luck we won't see Gray again in a meaningful situation this season.

I don't know - in a close game, a one-game playoff, a passed ball with a runner on third base can be the difference in a game, and Mr. Sanchez has been the AL leader in passed balls two straight seasons now (despite playing many fewer games that most other starting catchers).... a bit of a gamble starting him in such a game, especially if you don't "need" his bat b/c everyone else is hitting well...

Well, FWIW, this is from a couple days ago:

"Yankees C Gary Sánchez has 6 Defensive Runs Saved this month (most by a C). Sánchez often gets criticized for his pitch-blocking issues. But he's provided positive value in stolen base prevention, pitch framing and bunt defense."

He's not playing well, that's for sure.

Don't know about being lazy though. That seems like trolling.

I'll delete my post. Legit not trying to be a dick. Most of Yankees Twitter seems to be 100% done with the guy for the reasons I mentioned. Thought there was a general consensus.

A lot of Yankees fans are done with Sanchez. But he isn't lazy. Might be the hardest working position player on the team based on what everyone says. His problem is on the offensive side nowadays, though. He isn't hitting and that was the whole reason to keep him back there when his defense was poor. Now he's just not doing much well, but it's not a personality thing.

FWIW, Yankees Twitter is almost uniformly morons who take it as a personal insult that the team doesn’t go 150-12 each year.

Yankees are second in AL in OPS from C position.
Sanchez is in the top 5 primary catchers in the AL hitting-wise so far, but a secondary catcher taking over a third of the atbats OPSing .751 is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for that stat.

Sanchez has been a scapegoat for the underachieving Yankees. There are many other underachievers this season but Gary is the focus, probably because his career began with one amazing half-season of bombs before pitchers began to get a book on him. I bet 25 teams would line up to sign him in a free agent market.

Why do people form their opinions based on Twitter?
Because it's easy. If something happens, Twitter is the place to go to see how people are reacting in real time, the problem is that vocal Yankee fans are almost all entitled idiots.

I watch a lot of yankees games. I've seen him fail to run out a lot of balls. Whatever. I regret bumping the thread. I'll leave it alone and will show myself out of this forum.
I think it's because the Yankees don't have any other options and they have plenty of other issues elsewhere. Higgy has shown he can't be a full time catcher. Sanchez's defense has gotten better, in my opinion. They need to figure out center field and first base before worrying about what to do with Sanchez. I'd rather see if he can re-find his stroke than whatever the alternative is.

I wasn't around when you first bumped it and missed the first part of last night's game, but you're certainly right that his baserunning is often awful and he doesn't always run hard on ground balls. The thing is that I think he has actually been instructed to not go all out running to first unless it is a truly crucial play, NY doesn't want him pulling something and missing weeks. Also his demeanor gives the impression he doesn't play as hard as he could/should, but I think that's mistaken.

It's so hard to get quality catchers that NY has chosen to try to replace Sanchez from within but their efforts have not been very successful so far. They drafted a bunch of catchers in the 1st and 2nd round in recent years, but no one is really blossoming yet.
