According to multiple industry sources, the Red Sox will call up third baseman Garin Cecchini from Triple-A Pawtucket for Sunday’s game against the Rays. In order to make room for the 23-year-old — who entered the year ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Red Sox organization according to Baseball America — the team will option right-hander Alex Wilson to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Starter at 3rd until Drew comes up. Guessing Pedroia needs a few extra days and this allows them to slid Holt over to second while keeping a utility infielder on the bench.

Think he is infield depth for a day until Drew is ready. Great pitching by Rubby meant they didn't need another arm tomorrow instead.

I think this is it.  Dustin needs a few days and having the extra infielder is necessary.

He's earned the promotion with his continued high BA and high OBP, which was off the charts last year.  However, throw in his weak power output - which is poor for a third baseman - and so-so defense and it's hard to get overly excited about his guy right now.

Not here
Somehow, I really want him to get into the game even if it's just for one AB or so.

So if Farrell were to put one of the special getaway lineups we might see Garin at 3rd, Holt at 2nd, Herrera st SS, Hassan in the OF or at 1st? Maybe not all at once, but some of them.

I saw some tweets that Pedroia expects to play tomorrow though.

It's always good to get a promising prospect a few days to watch the major league game from the bench, maybe even get in an inning or two and a chance in the field so he can experience the butterflies. The second time around he won't be so wide eyed.

Cecchini is going to be a very good MLB hitter. He's done nothing but rake in the minors and at the same time he has an excellent eye. The oddity is the timing of this promotion as he's slumping for the first time this season, as he was batting close to .300 just a few weeks ago and now he's below .280. The promotion is more about need and getting his feet wet, rather than rewarding his recent play.
I've compared him to poor man's Wade Boggs, which is still very high praise.

Cecchini had a strong April, but has struggled in May. A little struggle is not unexpected, given the fact that he spent the first 1/2 of last year at high A-ball and only has a little over 400 AB between AA/AAA. I haven't read too many recent reports on his defense, but his 8 errors so far this year tell me he's still working on things on both sides of the ball. Hopefully, he can get a little taste of the big leagues and then go back to Pawtucket and use 2014 to make those strides he needs to make. Both Brock Holt's solid play and the Drew signing should help prevent the Sox from rushing Cecchini along too much before he is ready.

The explanation for the timing would appear to be that he's the only IF left on the 40 man roster eligible to be called up for today's game.

I wouldn't mind seeing him get an AB and a couple innings in the field just to truly get his feet wet.

Bring him up to the majors and his slugging percentage goes up.

Cecchini just reminded us of a reason why he may have a future in Boston despite the lack of home run power.

His first major league hit was an opposite field double off the wall.

The Red Sox have had some notable lefty hitters who made a habit of tattooing the Wall in Fenway, most notably Wade Boggs and Fred Lynn.  If Cecchini can do that consistently, he can make a career of it.

That worked out nicely. RBI double and a solid double play in the field.

Touche?
I thought his defense at third looked a little shaky. Obviously, this is a very small sample and there were probably nerves at play, so I don't think anyone should read too much into it, but it's regularly noted as an area of his that still needs refinement. I'm also very optimistic about his long-term potential. A high-OBP bat always finds a home. Power will come.

Matt Murton might have something to say about that.

Kind of a bad comparison.  In their first three years in the minors, Cecchini's OBP averaged 30 pts higher than Murton despite being a year younger at each level.  Moreover, he plays 3B and therefore has much more defensive flexibility than Murton had, as he was a LF from the moment he arrived in the Sox system.

FWIW, Murton appeared to be a useful player right up to the point where he started riding the shuttle to AAA - not sure what happened there.  He was out of the game at age 27 w/o having terrible years aside from a couple of 50-70 PA trials at ages 26-27.

At the time the rockies sold his contract he was a 28 year old with a career 101 wRC+ and 5.4 fWAR in just 1058 PAs. I doubt he would have had much trouble finding a job as someones 4th outfielder at the very least.

obviously SSS, but if garin continues on this pace, he'd be the best player in the history of the game.

BTW....we met Cecchini at an event in Fort Myers and he was asked how to pronounce his name. It's pronounced "Chickeeni." You're welcome.

I remember this conversation with you and BSG during Spring Training. So every time they pronounced it "Kechinni" I kept thinking you had said to remember "zucchini", and it wasn't working in my head. Chickeeni it is, and I hope he is playing on Bash game day.

The correct Italian pronunciation would be more like "Checkeeni" rather than "Chickeeni". For it to be "Chickeeni" the spelling would be Cicchini.

A sidenote. I am so glad to hear a young player's nickname that isn't from the A-Rod template.
