VAR denies Arsenal a goal by a toenail being offside. I'd like to see VAR adopt a margin of error, like the "Umpire's Call" decision in cricket video reviews: if the play is called onside on the field, you have to be at least a foot (or more) offside for a goal to be overruled.
Yeah.. var isn’t as accurate as it needs to be to make that kind of decision (frame rate vs speed of play, etc).. the whole time they’re looking at his toe.. where was the ball? How can you see if it was still in contact with Laca? It’s a system that relies on everyone not looking at it too closely so that it can maintain its veneer of hyper accuracy.

Exactly. If you froze the feed one frame later (and there is no way to tell with certainty what frame the ball leaves Laca's head on the flick, then maybe this toenail is back on side. Saka was moving back away from the goal at this moment and the defender was shifting toward the goal.

The worst thing is that I've seen absolutely no signs that anyone responsible for VAR is in any way worried about its implementation or suggesting any possible reforms about how it might be better used.

There's no other sport in which video review is so badly misused, is there? (Baseball might be in 2nd place in this regard.)

Hockey had this same problem for a few years with its own offside rule but eventually changed the rule to favor the attacking team and you barely ever see a review for offside anymore

HA HA Fulham guys hand is offside but apparently that's okay. He gets the penalty and Arsenal go down 1-0.

Why would anyone want to watch this product?

That penalty didn't seem any less offside than Saka, then it was a pretty obvious "hey the player's leg is out so I'm going to jump over it and I could easily stay on my feet because the contact was light as a feather but fuck it I'll just pretend like I've been shot instead and see what happens" type of situation.

Once again, if you took the still one frame differently then this may be offside. Stupid to pretend like VAR can distinguish the Saka situation from this situation.

What makes it even more enjoyable is the complete hack of a color man agreeing with every refs decision like they’re crystal clear good calls. Arsenal are getting fucked over today.

That should be onside, of course, but I don’t blame you guys for being annoyed by it. We really need to fatten that line to a good 12 inches and if there’s any overlap play on

Also.. those stills are ridiculously arbitrary. The VAR cameras need to have a much higher frame rate.. but even if they did how can you even tell the ball is off the foot or not? Both of these stills are frozen at some arbitrary moment to make an arbitrary decision. And these fucking announcers going on about how it was such a great Refs decision. Fuck off

Why ‘of course’? If you’re going to call Saka off you have to call that off.

Edit: which is what you may be saying... but there’s no way to say with certainty that either was off or on IMO given the games current rules.

As CP said the rule is that the hands and arms don’t count except the shoulders. But it should be onside because we shouldn’t be actively ruling out goals for things like this

This will probably warrant new thread soon, but NBC joins a few other places in amplifying a report by the Times of London that 5 EPL teams have signed on to a 16-team European Super League apparently bankrolled in part by DAZN (?).

Spurs and Arsenal would guarantee early exits. Maybe that is how Daniel Levy wants to stop Jose complaining about schedule congestion

American abroad Catrina Marcario scored as PSG knocked Lyon out of the CL. Lyon has won it 5 times running, so this opens it up for a new champion.

This match snapped to life. Tarkowski shrugged off 3 defenders like a dad playing with his toddlers.

It’s too bad burnley scored right away because that United goal was filth. From the Rashford nutmeg to Bruno’s unselfish dummy.

And that cut back just now? Rashford playing with defenders in the most entertaining way.

Another awful performance from Arsenal. If Arteta doesn't win Europa, time for the pink slip.
Is VAR a joke or should Arteta be sacked, because it seemed like arsenal dominated the game and were very unlucky and/or screwed to not walk away with 3 points?

if Arsenal held top of the table at any point of the season, Arteta could have gone the way of Mourinho and Lampard. Funny how Ole survived that.

What a gameweek so far

Mane breaks his goalless streak with some beautiful passing from Jota and Trent to make it an easy one.

Arrrrggghhh. So many wasted chances for Liverpool, it’s only fair that Leeds answer. If only there were some way to insulate Liverpool from their own poor play in matches like this...

Anyone else see the midfielder on Leeds screaming f---you at the ref?. Then he gives him two middle fingers, followed by two middle fingers to the Liverpool player?

I thought targeted dissent was a red card?

I don't think it would be possible for Spurs to get further embroiled in controversy, but the club always finds ways to amaze me.

Expecting to see Tanganga, Vini, Gedson, and Dane Scarlett starting today.

I gotta think Hugo and Kane are borderline picking the team today? I haven't been this curious about team selection... maybe ever? I literally have no idea what Mason and friends will do.

Picking, not picketing.

I believe he’s speaking to the likely balance of power with a caretaker manager who they both played with

Was getting my first COVID shot during the game. Everything is looking great! Spurs STEALING the points at the end? What a novel concept.

They were terrible in the first half. But then absolutely dominated the second. two var decisions evened out and it was a deserved 3 points.

When Kane's back, perhaps Lucas slides back with GLC played today and I think they'll be even more dangerous.

After going up 2-1, City down to ten men after Stones takes out some Villa dude.

Pep going batshit on the touchline and taps the fourth official on the shoulder as he's chewing him out. He'd get run in an American sport for that.
