Liverpool vs Ukraine-supporting Brighton to kick us off. I feel like we should be morally obligated to support the yellow and blue today… I guess there are occasional positives to being morally bankrupt. Either way, Mike Dean in the middle so we know who the real star is.

Mané not looking good. Cheap giveaway let’s Brighton break. He’s had three touches and lost it each time.

astride the divide
It's been a miserable month for Brighton, four straight losses, most of them poor. The ordinarily well-organized defense has struggled since Dan Burn was sold to Newcastle followed by an injury to Adam Webster, who's still out. Dunk missed a game in there too for a red card.

Bissouma was arguably the team's best player in the fall, but he's been oddly quiet since the African Cup. He's been subject of transfer rumors for two years now; I don't know if he wants out and didn't get it, or has an injury, or what. Brighton misses his commanding form in the midfield.

Lively start for the hosts here anyway.

VAR continues to be farcical, producing the objectively incorrect decision time after time after time.

I don’t understand how that isn’t at least checked by Dean. A knee to the chest and a hand to the face when the ball is well gone.

I made an offhand comment that EPL’s VAR has been bad enough to come under scrutiny as a scandal. I am believing that more and more. The referees have gotten together to sabotage it as a protest to protect the guys on the field. There’s no other rational explanation that guys with video replays can so consistently get fundamental decisions wrong.

Looking at the replays of that Sanchez challenge… It looks worse every time. To escape even a yellow card is just beyond insanity.

Matip’s runs are becoming hilarious. It’s like watching Brady rush. There’s no rational explanation for why either are effective.

Diaz with a terrific header for the lead. And now Sanchez should be getting a red. For Christ’s sake not even a yellow??????
It absolutely has to be a yellow but no red seems fine and largely consistent with an unwritten rule of refereeing, which is that you almost never give a red card when a goal is scored. Sanchez clattered him badly but not with his studs and guys get clattered badly on the pitch a lot without it being a red so it was at least debatable and once the ball went in the net he essentially swallowed the whistle. I think most referees do the same. You’ll see worse fouls not get reds because a guy gets a goal, like leg breakers that take a guy out a split second after a shot.

One implication of this practice, however, is that if the header goes wide Dean is definitely whistling for a penalty and at that point probably gives a lot more consideration to straight red as well.

Glad that is out of the way for Liverpool. Brighton is always a pain in the ass. I hope Brighton snap out of their funk soon - Lamptey is one of the most fun players in the league.

Arsenal mid-week. Let’s see how Salah’s hamstring feels.

Gutted for Lallana…again.

The site of 6’6” Weghorst trying to hide behind a smaller teammate on an attacking corner is killing me.

Apparently Bruno, McTominay, and Elanga are all out for United....assumedly with Covid.

That is three of their only players who can really be trusted to put in a shift these days.

Spurs really should win this.

Edit: I guess Elanga is just on the bench. Still, no McT and Bruno is a big miss in the middle of the park.

Pronably shouldn't give Ronaldo that kind of space (shrug).

cameras did pan to Klopp in the 2nd half on Diaz's miss. Jota was unmarked on the right side
In Goalzone they were talking about the “Incident” and, after showing the two video clips insinuated that it was Klopp yelling at Salah and Salah responding with a “what am I supposed to do” gesture..Except Klopp‘s clip was a different play. And Salah was making a penalty claim after being hooked down (Boussima grabbed his shoulder just as he started to shoot twisting him down). Such journalistic high standards.

but of course the narrative is Salah is selfish , a flopper and not a team player. So nothing like twisting the facts.

during the match, the commentators did point to that interaction: Klopp screaming "pass!" Salah appearing to yell "who!"
but in the 2nd half, when Luis Diaz went for the shot instead of passing to Jota, the cameras panned over to Klopp screaming "pass!"

on another note, loved Christian Romero barking at Maguire at his own goal

Yeah ..I noticed that as well. Salah had no chance to pass to anyone on that chance though … and his reaction had nothing to do with Klopp.

The marking of Ronaldo today has been abominable and might close the book on Spurs making the UCL next year.
