Marcus Smart should not be the man shooting the game-winning shot...TWICE in one game. Love that he has the mindset that he wants the ball, wish Tatum had that.
1. Marcus is the pg.. he’s supposed to get Tatum the ball
2. Because Marcus is out there they can double Tatum.. other teams want Marcus to shoot.

Ok pal. Situations reversed where Tatum helps off of Harden, I wonder what your read is on that play. I’m guessing it’s completely different
my dude, you leave the strong corner up 2 and it's a TERRIBLE play no matter who makes it. It's all the things you are explicitly told not to do at every level going back to AAU. I
If Joe calls that timeout, what exactly are the substitutions that Doc makes? I would bet a lot of money he leaves that exact 5 in…since, you know, he didn’t make a single substitution before that
He takes out Maxey and puts in Melton for sure,

I wonder what the ideal OFFENSIVE end-game lineup ought to be.

Play small with a bunch of guys who can score: Brogdon, White, Pritchard, Brown, and Tatum. Spread the floor and let Brown, Tatum, or White penetrate and either get a shot in the lane or kick to any one of four other guys who are very capable of knocking down a shot? I dunno. That's obviously not a lineup you want in the game for long stretches, but if the ONLY goal there is to get ONE basket, maybe this is the ideal group?

If he takes a timeout in that situation for one basket, I am guessing he puts in Brogdon for White

Coaches don’t make substitutions in OT, unless there’s foul trouble. I really don’t think they take Maxey out. It’s a probability play but I don’t think it’s anywhere near the odds you do apparently

Wasted a time machine game from Al too. He was magnificent against Embiid in the 4th and I’m wondering if he’ll be able to jump over a deck of cards on Tuesday.

Love Marcus in the post game praising Tatum's read. He thinks any play that ends up with him trying to be the hero is a good one. Should not be on the floor in closing offensive possessions. Good reason to save those time outs.

Just really fucking sucks to have dominated two games and lost two games basically by one possession after having late leads in both.

Have a lot of confidence in them playing well and being in position to win but very little that they won’t do 3 or 4 little things and at least 2 HUGE things down the stretch that blow it.

They do when they can go offense/defense... Joe was trying to do it a bit earlier but Brogdon got to the table too late. Doc would have made defensive subs, then if the Celtics score with time left he would take a timeout and put Maxey back in.

This is going nowhere because you have supreme confidence in something we absolutely don’t know. Also, if they take Maxey out and put Melton in…you know who’s still on the floor? James Harden!!!!

For the record, looking at twitter, the vast majority feel that Jaylen fucked up and Joe fucked up

This team was far from dominating today. The first half was dreadful.

Under 2 minutes in Q4:
  • Up 3 - Marcus missed 3
  • Tied - Marcus free throws
  • Tied (last shot) - Marcus missed 3
Just don’t understand how this happens so much.

Jaylen Brown on the decision to double: “Just a bad read. That’s it. It’s a gamble at the wrong time. Big shot by James Harden but that’s my fault. I take full accountability.”
I’m speechless. They’re not winning shit if their best players aren’t capable of making the right plays when it matters most. That’s not even a difficult read. Basketball 101. Do we super max this idiot? All the talent in the world and not two brain cells to rub together the second he steps foot on the court.

This one came to mind but it kind of doesn't count since Embiid got off a final prayer.

I'm glad it worked out then but are ISO-challenged 3s in tie games the highest % shot?

the late/tight approach, situational rotations + timeout use have been questionable all season with pedestrian results

I was hoping Boston wouldn't get put in these situations too much in the playoffs

Other teams try to force the ball to Marcus? Given who's on the floor, that's exactly who I'd want taking those shots if I was the opponent.

Christ, he made a mistake and admitted it. It's getting over the top in here with calling Jaylen a stupid basketball player.

Do we supermax him???? He keeps us in games regularly when the rest of the team/offense looks like they overslept. It's a crime he doesn't get the ball more in the crunch. Marcus calls his own number too much for his offensive talent level.

Just have to point out, 0 timeouts taken during this stretch. Maybe taking one and drawing up a play so that someone else gets a shot helps change who takes these shots (honestly maybe it doesn’t, since Mazzulla drew up a play to get Marcus the ball at the end of Game 1)

I don’t like saying this about anyone, especially when it’s after the game and we’ve all had a bit of time to digest what happened. It’s like questioning Tatum’s testicular fortitude….except this might actually be more insulting

If Jaylen isn’t on this team, the game is over at halftime. Maybe a little before that

It’s a gamethread and I’m pissed. I just don’t understand how he makes so many of those mistakes. He has been in the league too long to keep doing it.

Yea, Jaylen just needs to deny Harden the ball there and let Joel take a contested 2
Right. As I said earlier, I will always forgive this (or Tatum getting a pass off too late) because it’s in the heat of competition and it’s bang bang. You have to make a decision at the snap of a finger.

I have much more of a problem of sitting there and consciously using the strategy “Well, I don’t want to do anything. Let them figure it out!”

There is no situation where you abandon a shooter in the corner to help there. None. Doesn’t matter who it is defending and almost doesn’t matter who it is sitting in the corner.

It feels like destiny that one of these series their inability to close out these type of games will end their season. Winning the title without winning any of these type of games is near impossible. Probably not in the next round against much lesser seeds if they make it. But I fear it might be this round with this version of Harden.

I don’t have an issue with no timeout but why not extend the game because you have the two timeouts. Go quick. If you don’t score, you get another shot to go ahead or tie.

Edit - and if you choose to walk it up to take the last shot, at least get the shot off. It’s a double fail.
JT had a chance to finish at the rim. He might not have converted, but I can’t say that the strategy that led to that chance was flawed. As I said above, I’d live with the outcome.

Just a lapse in awareness by JT, who evidently thought he had a second more than he did.

I just rewatched the play and I’ll be damned if you aren’t right. Tatum got much closer to the basket than I thought. He really has to take that shot there.

I still 100% think a timeout should have been taken, as Tatum doesn’t even start towards the basket until about 5 seconds left…

All players make mistakes - especially at the end of games when it's intense and high stakes like that. Steph Curry called a timeout when they had no timeouts in G5 against the Kings with 42 seconds left.

I can't imagine what this place would look like if Jaylen had done that.

I'm with Al.

Steph curry can do anything he wants because he has 4 rings. He has more then earned the benefit of the doubt. The Celtics haven’t won or earned anything.

Embiid is right there to block it unless he goes for the floater. I just don’t see that look being very successful especially when you have two chances to execute an ATO.

At taht point in the shot clock, Tatum has to try it, maybe get a goaltend or foul call as bailout.

No timeouts for PHI either so htey were dead if we scored even with 1-2 sec left.

Most talented team but one of the worst in crunch execution time. That is truly a curse as a fan to watch

So, the offense/defense argument holds no merit because Doc wouldn’t have been able to do that since they have no timeouts. Mazzulla’s decision to not call timeout is that much worse

We’ve had these discussions forever going back to pre-Big 3. Of course back then the issues was that every end possession was a Pierce pull-up elbow jumper.

I’d kill for that kind of play now, at least it was a guaranteed shot and you could keep an eye on the clock, etc.
