This makes me sad

I hope he recovers quickly whatever it is

Another round of thanks for 2004 and 2007

For those without Athletic subscriptions, it's a hip replacement and foot surgery, thankfully not something scarier. Hoping he has a speedy recovery, sounds like it's been a brutal year trying to work through that.

Godspeed, Tito. You guided us through some of our best years, and took the fall when maybe you shouldn't have had to after chicken and beer and maybe helped turn the page before 2013. Always felt weird seeing you in that Cleveland uniform. Get well soon.

And hey, old friend DeMarlo Hale gets to manage in the meantime! I don't think he's ever managed at the major league level. Good luck to DeMarlo.

Must really be bad if it couldn't wait until the end of the season or at least until the Indians were definitely out of it.

They are kind of already out of it. Their team isn't great, they are way behind the White Sox, who are a much better team.(White Sox have an excellent run differential, over 100, and Cleveland is -28) Sportsline has them at less than 1% chance.

They likely aren't going to get another start from Bieber or Civale until September. More than half their starts are coming from pitchers who weren't supposed to be in the majors this year and they've had an anemic lineup all season. They've been going through the motions for at least a month now, only disguised by playing in the AL Central.

This is the second year in a row Tito will miss two months of the season and he missed time here and there in previous years for health reasons. I'm grateful for his time in Cleveland, he came in at a time they were struggling, made it a place where people wanted to play, and it almost came together in 2016, but there were real doubts he would be back in 2021 and now I think it's time for him to retire. It seems unlikely he can withstand a full season of the baseball lifestyle anymore and he's basically forcing Cleveland into a platoon at the manager's position. I'm not sure he can give baseball up, but he could semi-retire, do some work for MLBN throughout the year, and join one of the national broadcast teams in October.

As I pointed out in the other thread, because MLB awards victories to whoever holds the official title of manager, Francona will pass Lou Boudreau within the next couple of weeks as Cleveland's all-time winningest manager without being the active manager (he was also credited for all of Cleveland's wins last year while Sandy Alomar Jr was manager). However, it's time for Cleveland to move forward with Alomar or a new hire at the helm.

You still have the Wild Card. They only have one more loss than the Yankees or BJs, who both bought.

I do not think you have this right.

The Indians are behind the Rays, Oakland, Toronto, Seattle, Yankees and the Angels in terms of wins. They would have to pass 5 of those 6 teams, including Oakland, who they are 5.5 games behind. And the team is significantly worse than Oakland and the Rays.
