I’m curious if the more mature version of Max with refined racecraft was a mirage or if today is a one-off. This was the version of him that Danny rear-ended in Baku that I thought he’d grown out of.

I think he’s regressing back to his true personality because for the first time in a year and a half he is actually being challenged.

Norris made the smart choice imo to not back down when Max drove into his line, if he does that you wreck him and take him out of the race every time imo! If he concedes to Max's block then Max will always block. Now Max has that nice thought of being wrecked and taken out of the race the next time he decides to turn into his competitions line when they have the faster car. Dale Earnhardt approves Norris...:fonz:

Perez 19th and Verstappen 4th on the starting grid. Red Bull's dominance appears to be over.

Verstappen did that with a destroyed floor. Perez is washed. Verstappen just totalled his floor. Dominance gone but Verstappen in 4th was pretty amazing considering. But with England winning in Euros and a top 3 English quali. Tomorrow is going to be wild. Would expect Max to be in the mix for a win with the rebuilt car.

For the past 5-6 grand prix McLaren was marginally the better car and now Mercedes seems to be closing in for a three way tie.

I think that's true, I just think Max when his car right it has a good enough race trim to still pull through 3 cars such as George, Lando etc. Though maybe someone will cause a shunt with him instead today.

God the Hamilton love, vs. how they treat Verstappen is very revealing.

Good for Hamilton, but let's calm down just a bit.

McLaren screwed up the strategy again, the car may be ready for prime time, but the team doesn't seem to be.

Had Ferrari made the strategy and execution mistakes McLaren has made over the last 5~6 races,we would be seeing the clown memes.

and just like that Mercedes has two wins now.

Yep Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull all had bad calls today. Strategy teams not covering themselves in glory.

Red Bull strategy at least were completely on point with Verstappen they almost stole that race at the end.

Yeah the British love is a bit over the top but I think you have to forgive given the long drought for Hamilton and his age. It really was quite the outcome

Its a British TV show, of course its going to be British-centric, I'm sure the Dutch broadcast was completely raving about Max's fight back. Not sure why McLaren didn't stick Mediums on Norris. I think Lewis is going to get really frustrated by the Ferrari strategists next season.

Silverstone may be the best circuit each year. That was a really fun race. They're all more fun when strategy is important.

I read Perez brings in $30 mm worth of sponsors to Red Bull, so he isn't going anywhere, but I wish Albon was in that seat. Ninth for Albon and more points for Williams.

Man I'm sure a few in this thread would be less of a liability than checo lately.

That Yuki crash was scary as heck.

McLaren is so good hopefully they don't bottle it again.

Wildly entertaining race. Between Max throwing multiple tantrums and Lando going rogue that was a lot of fun. I get why it happened but Oscar was losing time and Lando didn’t kill his tires. “Tell him to catch up” was funny

Pretty good season, eh?
Much better than I thought it would be. I still think Max wins the title by a fair margin but Constructors Championship could be tight.

It’s just nice having multiple constructors competing rather than one car being so much better than everyone else.

Yep the mix of winners even if the WDC is a runaway makes it worth watching each weekend.

Can someone explain why McLaren ordered Norris to gave up the lead to Piastri? It wasn't clear on the YouTube highlight.

Verstappen drives like a real idiot, when he's not well in front. It appeared Horner was getting exasperated with him. He's costing him and the team points and there's plenty of races left that it may have real consequences.

Dive bombs were fine when Norris did them a few weeks ago, it's only driving like an idiot when Max does it.

Also his driving at Silverstone was amazing so can we please retire this UK hit job narrative that he needs the best car.

Also, Max is not the problem with the team and 4th vs 5th won't matter if Perez keeps crashing in qualifying.

I actually like Verstappen. But, I think he could be less aggressive and help himself out. The one spot, today, isn't much. But, he cost himself a podium in Austria.

I don't think he needs the best car to win. He's the best driver, with, probably, Piastri coming on his tail. All the drivers whine. Hamilton isn't any better on the radio than Verstappen, for example. It's probably the nature of the job and what sells to broadcast.

Perez is a mess. Will he be in the hot seat? Will his monetary support dry up? At least he got points today.

I find it interesting how the tides have changed during the season. I haven't followed long enough to know if that's not unusual.

McLaren’s strategy after Piastri took the lead was advantageous to Norris and designed to maximize his position and the total points they could earn. If they hadn’t given him that preferential treatment they felt Oscar would have won so they told Lando to give up the lead.

I mean, it's not new. This is collected from 2016-2018 and is why many people had a bad opinion of Max in the first year or two of his career:
https://www.formula1.com/en/video/7-times-max-verstappen-has-rocked-the-boat-with-his-rivals.6060954244001

He started figuring stuff out in 2019 and largely stopped doing the things that we are seeing again now.

But that's the thing with Max - so long as his car is better than everyone else, he can be calm and professional. Once he actually has to compete on the race track, he turns into a raging, childish asshole.

He's a supremely talented driver with such a massive sense of entitlement that he's dangerous to himself and others. He's exceptionally lucky that F1 cars are as safe as they are now, or he'd have already suffered a career-ending injury or worse.

Fully agree, but for a while being down on Max for his childish antics meant I was a "Lewis fanboi" or whatever.

I always wondered how Max was when it was him/George/Lando/Carlos doing karts as kids, since they are all spec/same and it's 100% just racing skill.

"The Stewards do not consider this to be a typical case of ‘changing direction under braking’ although it is our determination that [Hamilton] could have done more to avoid the collision."

Huh, so why is no one yelling about Hamilton? Or do we want to blame Max some more for Austria when Lando was doing this to him.

The real issues is the stewards and their handling of things Verstappen for whatever reason. Hamilton was completing a pass and shifted then nearly got shunted. He could have ruined his racing line but again why? So he could get compromised by a dive bomb. The mental gymnastics by the stewards is the issue how this kind of a move is fine but Alonso gets penalty points is the kinda BS that infuriates people.

I very intentionally didn’t quote your previous post because I was trying to make a point without evoking the fanboys who post here. But, since you replied to my post with such charm and sincerity, let me point out that your clear bias - that Max is the golden child who can do no wrong - is delusional.

He’s a great driver, but he’s also a fucking punk who has alienated competitors and his own team executives with his bullshit. About the only people he hasn’t “lost” are the Stewards, but given the WWE-like ethos of F1, I won’t be surprised to find out that this is a scripted occurance.

If this is the hill you’ve decided to die on, knock yourself out.

Ah cool the refs are crooked, got it.
Mocking me while complaining earlier about what you perceive as a double-standard of unfairness against Verstappen is a weird move.

To the point - there is a long history in F1 of rules being manipulated and/or enforced unevenly for the benefit of “favored” drivers and teams. It happened in 1989 when Ayrton Senna was punished and the title was delivered to Alain Prost. It happened in the 90s when Michael Schumacher wrecked Damon Hill to ensure he keep the world title with no consequences. (Though he suffered significant consequences when he tried it again years later with Jacques Villeneuve.) And it happened in 2021 when Michael Masi made an on-the-fly adjustment - later acknowledged as completely incompatible with the rules - to hand Verstappen the title.

But, sure, I’m the one who deserves mocking.

This is nothing new or unique to Max. Senna and Vettel were the same way, as is Lewis. It makes some degree of sense too, as a driver with clearly superior machinery can control the race pace and doesn't generally have to go at max effort for long if at all in the course of a GP.

Same for the attitude and entitlement. Lewis gets a LOT of slack because he's British and the commentators therefore openly root for him, but in the days when his car was on close to equal footing with the competition and he had a competitive teammate (i.e., Rosberg), EVERYTHING that went wrong in a race (or quali for that matter) was someone else's fault. He was blessed with an all-conquering car at Mercedes for the first few years of the Hybrid era, and that plus age have seemed to calm him down a bit. But once Red Bull caught up and surpassed Mercedes, the old Lewis has surfaced quite a few times on team radio. It's the height of hypocrisy for him to be calling out Max for his radio etiquette last weekend.

I have no disagreement with that - these guys are all prima donnas. To a great extent, the driver who is closest to Max (IMO) was Senna, who I adored back in the day.

The big difference is that Senna was not favored by the executives running the show at the FIA. Max is - or has been in the past. (It will change. It always does.) And that's the part of F1 that has caused me to turn away from the series before, and did once again after Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Good on Russell. He was at Williams when I started watching and he was my favorite driver. It's nice to see him getting wins.

I was able to listen on Sirius XM and they were, rightfully, hard on Perez. Red Bull really needed him to defend positions to help him and Verstappen.

It looks like we have a real series going into summer vacation.

Perez just a consistent disasterclass. George went full Albon with those hands that was serious pace management. Piastri must be kicking himself he didn't try the 1 stop.

Such a fun season RB 1/8 in WDC McLaren and Merc really have a chance to win each week. Ferrari is Ferrari.

Mercedes with 4 wins this year.

It's unbelievable to me that every weekend Mercedes are nowhere to be found on Free Practice or even qualifying and then on Sunday they come out of nowhere to win.

Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has lost his Belgian Grand Prix win after his car was found to be underweight during post-race checks.

Russell drove a spectacular one-stop race to hold off team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the finish, having converted sixth place on the grid into an on-the-road win.

But it emerged quickly after the race that Russell's W15 had not passed post-race scrutineering.

As detailed by the FIA technical delegate, Russell's Mercedes was initially weighed in at 798kg - which is exactly the weight limit.

However, it is the weight limit for the car without fuel on board - and after a requisite 2.8 litres of fuel were extracted from the car for required post-race checks for compliance, the W15 subsequently weighed in at 796.5kg, considerably below the weight limit.

Russell's car was therefore declared in breach of article 4.1 of the technical regulations.

"The calibration of the outside and inside scales was confirmed and witnessed by the competitor," the report wrote.

The finding was forwarded to the stewards, who subsequently disqualified Russell from the race result - the standard penalty for such an infringement.

The stewards said in their decision that Mercedes had confirmed the measurements were correct, while also acknowledging "that there were no mitigating circumstances and that it was a genuine error by the team".

Checo and Ricc staying where they are isn't unexpected but man it keeps WCC up for grabs.

Sainz and Albon is a nice pairing hopefully Vowles continues the Williams resurgence.

I think that Sainz signing with Williams is also.a vote of no confidence for Sauber and Alpine. But who knows if the gamble pays off for him. really tough to guess IMO.

Agreed on Alpine, but Sauber becoming Audi is making their driver search/setup a little bit distorted - they brought Hulk in so they would have a German driver for domestic TV purposes, so I wouldn't read much into that in the short term. I also suspect a brand new team is more of a gamble than Sainz wants to take. Then again, Williams is a decent gamble in and of itself.

Lando really needs to work on his starts, but the car is so fast it doesn't matter at the moment.
I was thinking the same, but at some point they had a graphic which showed that Norris and Max had exactly the same reaction time. Apparently, the McLaren's wheels spin at the start and don't get a good traction. Might be a setup issue.
