Cano with two more HRs tonight, he's been great the last few months.

Not a glowing assessment of Cano from Van Slyke....

Robinson Cano, you’re the worst.

That’s exactly what former Mariners first-base coach Andy Van Slyke said of the Seattle second baseman during an appearance on CBS Sports Radio 920 in St. Louis on Thursday.

Van Slyke said Cano’s poor performance this season, especially in the first half, was the reason general manager Jack Zduriencik, manager Lloyd McClendon and the rest of the coaching staff were fired after the Mariners went 76-86. Hitting coach Howard Johnson, a former Met, was reassigned in June.

“Robinson Cano cost the GM his job, the hitting coach got fired because of Cano and then the manager and coaches got fired because of Cano, because that’s how much impact he has on the organization,” Van Slyke said during the interview. “He was the worst player and it cost people their jobs in the process.”

For the record, he was very good the second half of the season after being horrendous in the first half, a .920 OPS in 360 PAs after July 1.

So I'll ask the question here. Would you take Cano back for Ellsbury? Cano makes 3 mil more, but the killer is 3 extra seasons. One the other hand he is a much better hitter

Heh, I almost included that in my post, it's definitely close.

I think I would, NY still has a hole at 2B, Hicks could play CF, and Cano could hopefully transition to DH after A-Rod is gone, plus I just like him a lot more than Ellsbury (totally irrational component).

Hell no. We talk and talk about the benefits of getting younger. I'd rather stick with Ellsbury and hope he stays healthy than sign up for the three extra years of Cano.

Hiroki Kuroda re-signed with the Hiroshima Carp for around $4.9M, making him the highest paid player in Japan.

Stephen Drew signs with WAS, thankfully removing any chance that he'd somehow sneak back onto the Yankee roster yet again.

The plan is for Drew to play defense at 2B, use Murphy as the DH for him, and have the pitchers bat
