It's interesting to see the whole lazy-latino/fiery-white-guy schtick coming from a Latino ballplayer instead of an announcer or writer.

Though an abused stereotype, presumably in this case it's not schtick. It's just two guys. Cano is kinda lazy and Pedroia isn't.

Or maybe that was your point.

I think for Rivera to write it that plainly means that Cano's reputation within the team was pretty well established. He didn't work as hard as some of his teammates thought he should. I'd be shocked if that perception wasn't part of the rationale to not go over 7 years.

Two respected members of the Yankees organization have called him out.  First it was Kevin Long (Hitting Coach) and now Mariano. I also agree that such perception probably played a role in not going over 7.

I don't know if I even had a point just merely an observation. I do think Cano could run down the line a bit harder but I don't think you can be lazy and be as good a hitter as Cano is. It's also interesting to see the narrative change from "graceful, plays with style" to "lazy" from the Yankee personnel and its fanbase.

I was thinking that it had more to do with the behind-the-scenes stuff that we don't see -- practice, workouts, off-season prep...things we don't see much of, but that teammates do. Teammates know when a guy isn't pushing himself as hard as he can.

Those perceptions about Cano have been around for a long time. Having Rivera chime in just adds a bit of weight to it.

Yeah, it's a long season with hundreds of sprints down the first-base line. And if a guy doesn't explode out of the box on every apparent single, just in the chance a left fielder bungles it and there's a chance for a double, it's hard to crucify them for being a "not Pedroia." Especially when you've got the talent and speed of Cano, who can probably turn it on and get into second ahead of a tag anyway.

Mo's comment was mostly a nod to Pedroia, but I agree that if he'd seen Cano working harder over the years behind the scenes, he doesn't say it.

Cano still stuck on 1 HR, maybe Seattle should give him a raise (or an extension) and make him feel more appreciated.

He's at .301/.355/.385. 10 XBH. His slugging % is .116 lower than his career average. nothing like earning your pay.

These numbers can change pretty quickly.  I mean, the guy is going to take a cut just from leaving the AL East and their tiny parks and going to SAFECO and hitting in parks like LA and Oak.  Tex is not the hitters a paradise it once was either.

I also think a teams batting order has a significant impact on a players stats and having a guy like Hart as your protection can't help

As it is, he has played every game and has a decent line

318/366/406/771

He also is batting 352 over his last 26 games with a 456 SLG, and thats without any HR

I'll be stunned if he doesn't end up with good numbers, but it is funny that he only has one HR through more than 1/4 of the season.

Let's have a moment of silence for Nick Swisher and his .608 OPS after 190 PAs so far in 2014. Swish hit 22 HRs and compiled a .763 OPS in 2013 after averaging around .850 for four years in NY.. Players who leave the cozy YS3 almost always fall off a cliff power-wise. Fenway has the same effect on ex_Sox not named Victor Martinez, who just homered again tonight in Cleveland.

Cano heating up with his second homer today, up to a .807 OPS now. He's still only on pace for 7 HRs, though. :)

Pretty surprised at how bad Nick Swisher has been so far this season, his .631 OPS is among the worst in the AL.

Vernon Wells is just finishing up with a family barbecue tonight. Making $21M this year for doing nothing. Soriano has to make a fool of himself to earn his dough from the Cubs.

Phil Hughes again, shutting out Toronto in Toronto thru six innings so far. 86 pitches, 67 strikes. They say he is throwing his fastball more with the Twins. Pretty simple fix for a guy so messed up in 2013.

Montero called up by the Mariners after Smoak went down with injury.

Has been hitting .270/.345/.455 with eight home runs in 59 games in AAA.

And batting cleanup against LHP.

Jesus Montero didn’t get eased back into the lineup after more than a year since his last big-league plate appearance.

Montero hit fourth against the Rangers as the DH, and McClendon’s rationale was simple.

“He’s here to hit off left-handers,” he said.

Former Mariner Joe Saunders started for the Rangers, and McClendon said he thought Montero was the best option because of his potential power.

Montero hadn’t stepped into a batter’s box in a major-league game since May 20. He spent the rest of last season in Class AAA Tacoma, then showed up to spring training this year 40 pounds over the weight he was supposed to report at. At the time, Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said, “Any expectations I had are gone.” McClendon said Montero was at a “crossroads.”

With injuries to Michael Saunders, Corey Hart and Justin Smoak — and with the struggles of Nick Franklin and Abraham Almonte in previous stints — the Mariners didn’t have much of a choice but to bring up Montero.

He hit .270 with eight homers and 40 runs batted in in Tacoma this season. He also started getting in better shape, though McClendon said he “still had a ways to go.”

“As he got in shape, the bat speed came back,” McClendon said. “It was a tough year for him, but I think he’s bouncing back. I think he’s eager to make amends and contribute and help this team any way he can.”

McClendon thinks he's such a liability at 1B that the other night he threw John Buck out there, who'd never played an inning at first in MLB, then let Montero do it. DH only.

Cano hit HR #3 for the M's today, boosting his SLG to .428.

Actually #4 and .438, he hit one against NY last week and Ellsbury stole another.

Solarte is still killing it for SD, 12 hits and 4 BBs in his first 8 games, 1.016 OPS.

He'll probably have a nice trip around the NL, and then it's back to suck. Hope he proves me wrong.

All -- I removed a post mentioning Rusty Torres' abuse of a young girl.  The link is still the 2014 Yankees Schadenfreude thread if that sort of thing is of interest to you.  You are also welcome to discuss it in a new thread somewhere else if you wish.

There has been some decent discussion on how former Yankees are performing on their new teams this season.  Let's keep it focused on that.

2.50 with a good outing today for the Twins:  7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB 7K

His K/BB for this season is pretty incredible. Over 150 2/3 innings he has just 16 walks to go along with 134 strikeouts. That's a 8.4 K/BB! He's not giving up a crazy amount of homers this year either. Basically his .344 BABIP is the only thing preventing his numbers from looking like a CY contender.

As Detroit's bullpen falls apart, Joba Chamberlain is doing his part. Took the loss in Saturday's game, then blew the save on Sunday. Pitching to a 5.40 ERA in August.

With Joe Nathan imploding again, Dombroski has gotta be on the phone to Boston this week. What would he give up for Uehara?

Few things make me happier than watching that fat fuck struggle. I could possibly feel bad for him, but then I look at that beard and it's gone.

I haven't seen a report that Koji's cleared waivers. Have you?

Joba's antics do make him hard to root for even as a yankee fan but i do feel bad for him for the way the Yankee brain trust jerked him around. With the "Joba rules" and his transition from a starter in the minors to a reliever in 2007 then a reliever/starter/reliever in 2008 then a regular season starter/playoff reliever in 2009 then full time reliever after that. A shoulder Injury in 2008 & TJ surgery in 2011 finally settled the starter/reliever debate but it always seemed to me that the yanks were so cautious with his arm and so undecided with is role that in the end it hurt his development.

No. I guess there would be takers before Detroit's turn came up but really, who would need a closer except a team in the playoff race? And Detroit is the one with the biggest need. Dombroski's reputation is that he will give up talent to go for it all. What use is Koji in Boston right now?

Strange no mention of Cano's MVP'ish season since he started hitting.

Going into tonights game he had line of 333/402/476/877 and a career high OPS+ of 150
.
His fWAR is 4.8 which translate into 6 something pace for the season, which would put him a 4 million /WAR for 2014.

Seeing as Cano likely could be the difference between going to the playoffs and not, and seeing how the WSJ said last year that not making the playoffs  cost the Yankees 70 million in 2013 dollars, it would seem  the 70 million devalued dollars Cano would earn in the last 3 years of his contract 7 years from now was perhaps a risk worth taking.

I must admit to have been ok with letting him go,  but it never occurred to me they would then go almost 2/3 of a season with Brian Roberts at 2B.

A lot of hypotheticals in there, but you can start with the fact that there is no way in hell that a one game road playoff game translates to anything near $70M in additional revenues. I don't know if 5-6 additional wins would end up getting NY into the playoffs this year (I doubt it by the end of the year), but even so, it would take either winning the division or winning the wild card game to get NY to the point where they have any home playoff games at all.

I don't think anyone ever doubted Cano would be great for at least the next 3-4 years, it's the other 6-7 that was the concern. NY was going to be fucked either way on that deal, though, either short-term or long-term, we all knew that.

Still, one can't help but wonder what this lineup might have accomplished with Cano hitting third every day.

I don't think it is the one-game playoff that generates the extra money, but the additional walk-up ticket sales in a very not sold out ballpark that a playoff contender would generate whereas an also-ran team does not.
