Jesus Montero tried to go into the stands with a bat in Boise tonight. He was on a rehab assignment with Everett, the Mariners' Single-A team.

Apparently, Montero does not like ice cream sandwiches.

Montero was coaching first base, and at the end of an inning, the unidentified cross-checker yelled at him to hustle off the field, according to Boise official scorer Liza Safford. Montero then headed to the AquaSox dugout on the third-base side.

According to a game offical, the cross-checker then ordered an ice cream sandwich and had it sent to Montero in the dugout, escalating the confrontation further. The official said Montero -- who arrived at Mariners Spring Training 40 pounds overweight this season -- approached the stands with a bat while screaming profanities and threw the sandwich at the cross-checker. Montero had to be pulled back from the stands by Everett pitching coach Nasusel Cabrera, Safford said.

Wow, that is a sensational story. This along with Jack Z's very blunt assessment this spring training makes me think the whole organization is just totally over the guy, like his particular version of throwing an opportunity away is particularly galling to watch.

And finished 1/3rd of an inning shy of a $50,000 bonus.

And I believe I saw a rain delay is what cost him the bonus. He had only thrown 96 pitches through 8 dominant innings, and then the skies opened.

The Twins offered to let him get pitch in relief this weekend, but Hughes declined.

Can't the Twins just give it to him - as an act of good faith?  In some ways I'd think that would be BETTER for them than simply offering to let him pitch and get that last, qualifying 1/3 of an inning pitched.  It would reflect well on the organization, FWIW.

There may be tax consequences, but IANAL. Also, TINLA, TINSTAAPP, HIPPA, FEMA, OSHA, IRS.

Huh, okay.  Still, if I'm the Twins and the offer to let him pitch was sincere, I add a clause to his contract that says he gets half a mill if Suzyn Waldman says something gushy and asinine into a microphone over the next 48 hours.

Article on MLB.com about Hughes declining the offer to pitch in relief.

Hughes was at 96 pitches through eight innings against the D-backs and needed just one out in the ninth to receive a $500,000 bonus in his contract. He would've gone out for the final inning, but a 66-minute rain delay cost him the chance to reach that mark.
So, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and general manager Terry Ryan called Hughes into the manager's office at Comerica Park before Thursday's game to tell him he could pitch in relief this weekend. But Hughes didn't take long to come to a decision, despite the amount of money involved.
"They extended the offer for me to pitch in the bullpen, but I just didn't think it was right," Hughes said. "If I were fighting for a playoff spot, I'd 100 percent be available. But given the circumstances, I don't think it's the right thing to do."

The Mariners are one back of Oakland with one to play. Cano is hitting .263 this month with 11 RBI in 105 ABs. OBP around .330. 4-for-24 in past week with 2 RBI. The big hits have come from Logan Morrison, Dustin Ackley, Mike Zunnino, et al.

SEA is 8-12 in their last 20 with 17 runs total scored in those 12 losses, not sure the "big hits" have come from anyone. Oaklsnd is just managing to suck a little bit more than them down the stretch.

Exactly. Last night was the season in miniature: bases loaded, 0 outs, no one scores. If the M's get in, I don't expect them to get very far.

Cano, who is competing with a team of MLB players in a series in Tokyo, was hit by Japanese pitcher Yuki Nishi on the second pitch of his at-bat in the seventh inning. Clearly upset, he walked to first base and intended to stay in the game. But after a few moments and in obvious pain, he was lifted for pinch-runner Jose Altuve.

After he exited the game, Cano underwent X-rays, revealing a non-displaced fracture of his right small toe.

The Mariners released an update that said the injury “will not require a cast or any treatment, just rest.”
